This unexpected behavior has been reported by Robbie (macOS 13.0.1):

“APPLE External Wired Keyboard (attached with an APPLE USB-USBC dongle) does not work on restart! Driving me nuts when using MacBook Pro with external monitor!”

We’ve found similar complaints on Reddit:

“Is anyone testing Ventura finding an issue where the keyboard stops working after the machine goes into sleep mode or is locked?”

How To Fix Apple Keyboard Not Working

These glitches will have to be addressed by Apple in upcoming software updates. However, until then you can apply the following fixes:

1. Reconnect Keyboard

If the wired keyboard stops working after restart you have to physically unplug and reconnect it.

Yes, this is annoying but until this bug is patched, there’s no other option.

2. ReEnable Bluetooth

If Bluetooth keyboard stopped working after sleep or Lock Screen, try to disable and re-enable Bluetooth:

  • This is done from the menu bar, click the Bluetooth icon.
  • Use the switch next to Bluetooth to turn it Off.
  • Wait a couple of seconds and turn it back On. Does it help?

3. Reboot Mac

If you have problems with a wireless keyboard, restart your computer and the functionality should be restored:

  • Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner and select Restart.
