Apple has released iOS 16.4 build number 20E247 for the iPhone 8 and later models! This update comes with new features and enhancements, bug fixes, security updates and its fair share of new problems!
iOS 16.4 Bugs
Before you update from iOS 16.3.1 or an earlier build, check out issues reported by users that have already tried it out:
- 1. Notification Center animations not working properly. They glitch out occasionally when opening the Notification Center. Confirmed by LukeVeras.
- 2. Spotlight search keyboard glitches out. Reported by Smply_Rckless.
- 3. ID card error in Wallet when adding or presenting the document. Mentioned in the Developer release notes.
- 4. Pages, Numbers, and Keynote require collaborative documents to be closed when Advanced Data Protection for iCloud is enabled.
Workaround: Close the affected document and reopen it after a few minutes. Source: Apple Developer notes. - 5. iCloud Drive not working when opened from Files.
Workaround: Restart iPhone or iPad. - 6. Apple Watch migration not working when restoring a backup to a new phone.
Workaround: Unpair AW from the previous iPhone, then pair it to the destination phone. - 7. To be updated.
iOS 16.4 Bug Fixes
The release notes mention two issues that have been addressed in this release:
- 1. Ask to Buy requests from children not appearing on the parent’s device has been solved!
- 2. Matter-compatible thermostats unresponsive when paired to Apple Home have been solved!

iOS 16.4 Security Updates
This release patches a bunch of vulnerabilities including Calendar, Camera, CarPlay, FindMy, iCloud, Photos, Podcasts, Safari, Shortcuts and more.

iOS 16.4 Features
The release notes highlight six new features and enhancements including:
- 1. Emoji keyboard gets 21 new emoji including animals, hand gestures, and objects.
- 2. Web App Notifications are now available for those added to the Home Screen.
- 3. Voice Isolation for cellular calls prioritizes your voice and filters out the ambient noise.
- 4. Duplicates album in Photos can now also detect duplicate media in an iCloud Shared Photo Library.
- 5. VoiceOver support for maps in Weather.
- 6. Video is automatically dimmed when flashes of light or strobe effects are detected.
- 7. Crash Detection enhanced for iPhone 14 and 14 Pro models.

The most notable new feature in this release are the new emojis available thanks to support for the Unicode 15.0 Emoji standard!
- Autocorrect for the Korean keyboard is turned on by default for testing and feedback.
- Ukrainian keyboard supports predictive text.
- Gujarati, Punjabi, and Urdu keyboards get support for transliteration layouts.
- Choctaw and Chickasaw get new keyboard layouts.

- Shortcuts app receives a number of new action options Find Books, Intercom broadcasts announcements, Set VPN connects / disconnects, Set Always-On Display toggles and many more documented here by MacRumors.com.
- Apple Podcasts app gets a series of new features on iPhone, iPad, Mac and CarPlay including a new Channels menu and an Up Next queue which can include episodes listeners have saved to their Library and episodes played from shows they do not follow:
- Order Tracking Widget for the Wallet app is now available on the Home Screen and helps you track orders placed with Apple Pay.
- PlayStation 5 DualSense Edge wireless controller gets support in iOS 16.4. This makes the accessory usable with Apple devices.
- Home – Both manual and automatic Software Update support is now available for Matter Accessories
- Settings – Apple Developer Program members can enable/disable beta updates on iPhone or iPad directly from Settings -> Software Update.
iOS 16.4 Update
This update is available, over-the-air in Settings -> General -> Software Update on iPhone 8 or later models!
All that you have to do is tap Download and Install! Be patient until the update is requested, downloaded, prepared, verified and installed on your device!

I removed a song from my queue, and the Music app froze after 10 seconds it forced it to close itself.

Cannot add anymore my bank card in wallet after iOS 16.4 update.
Used to work on iOS 16.3.1 ( both iPhone 8 ) .
It works on iOS 15.5 ( iPhone 6s ) .
Email notification complexity and it does not work like in previous versions.I consider it a bug.
Have you managed to fix this in the meantime? Did 16.4.1 help? What about 16.4.1a?

Phone shows call, failed and wouldn’t call out or receive a call. reset didn’t help. I tried several times. finally when I got home I reset through my Wi-Fi and apparently it’s working now. I hope it works when I go away from home. my daughter had the same problem in Washington.

HomePod OS 16.4 has been a huge problem for me. Since the introduction of OS 16 my HomePods have been awful, but with OS 16.4 they achieve a new level of mediocrity. I need to restart them every single day. Restoring them to factory settings doesn’t change a thing.
Music constantly stops on one, multiple or all HomePods. Siri is dumber than ever. They keep disconnecting from the network.
All other products on my Wifi work flawlessly. So if you are still on OS 15, stay there. OS 16 is not worth it.

Touch Screen does not work on locked screen after update
What iPhone model? Is your device running with an aftermarket screen replacement? did the touch screen work on Lock Screen with any previous iOS 16 version?
After updating everything is slowed on my phone. The weather app stays empty and doesn’t load up.
