Magic Keyboard not typing on iPad after iPadOS 16.2 update? Magic trackpad and key combos like command + Space and command + Tab work, which shows that the peripheral is connected, but no text can be entered?

This issue has been reported by Jared:

“Magic keyboard not typing after updating to 16.2, although it seems connected. trackpad works. Any tips?”

This problem has been also mentioned on Reddit:

“The command space works flawlessly, so do the magic trackpad but when goes to typing none of keys works, yet it will register the input after some time.”

Apparently, the issue persists even in iPadOS 16.3 Beta 2 as claimed by 0xd00d:

“I can tell you what it didn’t fix, the absolute dealbreaker of a bug where my magic keyboard cover doesn’t type.”

We’re not sure if Apple is aware of this bug, and have just submitted our own feedback for this issue and linked this article to the documentation. If you’re experiencing the same don’t hesitate to share it in the comments for better exposure!

How To Fix Magic Keyboard Not Typing On iPad

Most likely, Apple will have to fix this glitch in an upcoming software update. In the meantime you can try the following and let us know if you have any success:

1. Undock / Redock iPad

  • 1. On the iPad keyboard, touch and hold the keyboard icon, in the lower right area of the keyboard.
  • 2. Slide your finger up and select Undock.
  • 3. Reboot iPad and use the same steps to Dock keyboard.

2. Unplug / Replug iPad

If your Magic Keyboard is always connected to power (used as a docking station) you can try to unplug it and then plug it back in. Does it help?

3. ReFocus App

According to randitchyd4478 the Magic keyboard not typing issue is triggered when you have multiple different windows open on the screen, a glitch causes the iPad to lose focus and typing stops working.

Workaround: To get it working again you have to swipe up to go to the Home screen and then return to the app that you want to type in.

Additional Tip: If you have a Quick Note window open, but don’t plan to type in it, dismiss it or Magic keyboard typing won’t work with other apps.

Workaround For Magic Keyboard Not Not Working On iPad

Surprisingly or not, the onscreen keyboard will work. So, if your have trouble typing letters with the MK, use the touch keyboard available on your iPad!
