AirPods Pro Cutting Out On iPhone After Firmware Update
Are your AirPods Pro cutting out on iPhone during music playback? Is the audio working intermittently with both Apple Music and Spotify streaming services? Does this happen after the latest firmware update?
AirPods Pro Cutting Out On iPhone
This issue has been initially reported by Dan on our AirPods 4A402 firmware review page:
“I’m getting audio cutting out every minute or so while playing music (downloaded to the phone as well as when streaming). This didn’t happen with previous versions (am carrying my phone in the same place as before).”
The problem has been also confirmed by Octavio L.:
“Also experiencing cut outs when playing music, both Spotify and Apple Music. This was not happening before update this week.”

How To Fix AirPods Pro Cutting Out On iPhone
It’s unclear yet if this issue will have to be fixed in an upcoming software update, or if we’re dealing with isolated incidents. Until more info becomes available, you can use the following troubleshooting options:
1. Reset AirPods Pro
Affected users have mentioned that restarting both iPhone and AirPods won’t help as neither does removing AirPods and reconnecting.
However, you can try to factory reset the Bluetooth earbuds:
- 1. With the AirPods connected, open Settings on iPhone and browse for Bluetooth.
- 2. Tap the i icon next to the
[Airpods name]
. - 3. Go for Forget This Device and confirm your selection.
- 4. Bring back AirPods in their case, but keep the lid open!
- 5. Reset AirPods by pressing & holding the Setup button for 15 seconds until the status light flashes amber and then white.
- 6. Close the lid. Wait for 10 seconds. Open the lid and reconnect AirPods by following the on-screen instructions.

AirPods Pro Cutting Out Workaround
It seems that this issue only occurs when the Bluetooth earbuds are airplaying from iPhone. If you have an iPad available, I recommend you to switch for it.
Simply, open Apple Music or Spotify on your iPadOS device and the AirPods will automatically connect to the tablet.

My AirPod Pros started disconnecting within 5-10 seconds after connecting to iPhone X after trying spatial sound with new update. I have tried all fixes and nothing works. The airpods simply won’t stay connected. This is happens when using Bluetooth to listen to music on my iPhone as well as streaming tv shows or just trying to connect to the phone without any other apps open.
Thanks for the feedback Chris. Sorry to hear about this. Does it happen after they updated to firmware 4A402?
Also, without Spatial Audio they work normally? Dolby Atmos is compatible with iPhone X. You’re not dealing with hardware limitation.
I suggest you to contact Apple support and ask them about it. Would appreciate if you can write a followup after you get an official reaction.
Having the issue on iPhone 12 running iOS 15.1.1 and airpod pro running 4A402. Only other active Bluetooth devices is a series 5 watch. I tired most of the fixes including disconnected, forgot the devices and re-paired them. Turned off automatic ear detection, changed modes, etc.
In my case it definitely related to the watch. When I powered off the watch it seemed to resolve the issue.
Thanks for the followup. Is the watch updated to watchOS 8.1?
Thanks for reporting this Dave. Not sure what else to suggest for now. You might need to update to iOS 15.2 when it becomes available.
There is absolutely an issue with 15.2 and AirPod Pros. I just bought brand new Pods (I’ve been using a pair for over a year without ONE issue) and this new pair is horrible.
1. Connect easily and quickly.
2. Sound is intermittent.
3. Left ear quits working.
4. When trying to set to Noise Cancellation mode, it won’t even accept the option. Just says “Put in both ears” etc.
5. Have reset multiple times.
6. Have followed every reset technique (reset phone, reset pods, etc.) and still have intermittent sound and left ear quits working.
@Apple – get your freakin’ act together. Stop going backwards.
Is there a chance that your AirPods Pro shipped faulty? You should get them replaced, as this looks like a hardware issue to me. Keep us posted please.
