The confusion is caused by the fact that there are two loudness levels that you can adjust. One of them is the audio playback volume, like music for example. The second is how loud an iPhone rings during when it notifies you about an incoming call or how loud it alerts you when a notification is generated. You can’t control both intensities in the same time, with the Volume buttons.
iOS is configured, by default, to assign the playback Volume control function to the above mentioned iPhone buttons. That’s why some can end up thinking that their iPhone ringer Volume button isn’t working. They are clicking the Volume Up or Volume Down controls and an incoming call alert is continuing to ring too loud or too low, because they are adjusting the playback audio and not the ringer intensity.
How To Adjust iPhone Ringer Volume With Volume Buttons
If you prefer to control the loudness of the iPhone’s alerts with the Volume buttons, here is what you have to do:
1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap on Sounds & Haptics.
3. Enable the Change with Buttons feature. This will allow you to change the volume of the ringer and alerts using the volume buttons.
Fact: If you change your mind, undo this change and the settings will return back to the default state.
Tip: When the Change with Buttons option is enabled you will still be able to adjust the volume of the music during the actual playback, when you listen to Apple Music, YouTube or anything similar.
iPhone Control Center Volume
Keeping the Change with Buttons is the preferred setting for many of us, because the audio intensity during music playback can be also easily controlled from the Control Center Volume toggle.
How To: Swipe-down from the top-right corner of the screen. Drag & drop the Volume bar to the desired level.
Important: iPhone models with a Home button provide access to the Control Center with a swipe-up from the bottom of the screen.
Tip: The Control Center volume bar always controls the playback volume and not the ringer.
