If you’re new to iOS, you might not be properly up to date with how your iPhone’s Volume buttons work. Ever since the earliest models, Apple’s smartphones are equipped with two buttons that help users to control the Volume intensity. They’re placed on the left side of the device and are called Volume Up and Volume Down buttons.

The confusion is caused by the fact that there are two loudness levels that you can adjust. One of them is the audio playback volume, like music for example. The second is how loud an iPhone rings during when it notifies you about an incoming call or how loud it alerts you when a notification is generated. You can’t control both intensities in the same time, with the Volume buttons.

iOS is configured, by default, to assign the playback Volume control function to the above mentioned iPhone buttons. That’s why some can end up thinking that their iPhone ringer Volume button isn’t working. They are clicking the Volume Up or Volume Down controls and an incoming call alert is continuing to ring too loud or too low, because they are adjusting the playback audio and not the ringer intensity.
