Instagram On iPad Not Working, Cannot Post Stories? (Fix?)
Last updated on January 7th, 2023 at 02:57 am
Posted in News by Patricia on October 30, 2022Instagram on iPad not working properly? You cannot post stories since updating to iPadOS 16? App is displayed very small and can’t be enlarged? Software is crashing every couple of minutes? You’re not the only one.
Instagram On iPad Not Working iPadOS 16
These problem has been initially reported by Karin:
“Instagram is no longer working on my iPad Pro 4th generation. It displays Instagram only very small. It cannot be enlarged. Also not with the new stage manager. I can no longer post stories. I can create them. But the button to post them is missing.”
confirmed by AH (iPad Pro 3, iPadOS 16):
“Lot of problems on instagram. I can not find post option to post my Story on instagram now. And the app is crashing every 3 to 4 mins on minute work.”
Are you also experiencing the same? We couldn’t replicate these issues on iPad (7th gen). If you’re experiencing the same please share it in the comments. Do mention your iPad model.
How To Fix Instagram Issues in iPadOS 16
Instagram on iPad is available via the iPhone app. Meta hasn’t released, to this date, an Instagram app for iPad. However, up to the iPadOS 16 update, the app could be enlarged via a zoom-in button available in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
That doesn’t seem to be available anymore. More the resolution mismatch is causing the Post Stories button not to show up, thus making it impossible for users to post a new story.
The solution could be provided by Meta, with an app update for Instagram that corrects this problem or by an upcoming iPadOS 16 software update. So, check the App Store (direct link) for a new version.
(Update, November 17)
Temporary Fix For Unable To Post Instagram Story On iPad
Brian informed us that he was able to post story in Instagram while running iPadOS 16 after tweaking the Display Zoom setting. Here is how to:
- Open Settings and go for Display & Brightness.
- Tap on Text Size.
- Use the knob to text a larger text size.
- Return to Instagram and try to post a story. Does the Post Story option show up now?
Fact: Even bigger text is available in Settings -> Accessibility -> Display & Text Size -> Larger Text (Larger Accessibility Sizes).
(Update, January 7)
King Cobra has provided a similar troubleshooting routine:
- 1. Go for Settings -> Display & Brightness -> Display Zoom -> Select “Larger Text”.
- 2. Story post button should show up now because Instagram screen size is bigger.
- 3. To make font and home screen look normal, decrease font size and turn off “Use large home icon”. This way home screen and icons will look like they are on a standard mode.
Workaround for Instagram Issues On iPad
An option is to access your Instagram account via Safari.
However, the web version also comes with a few shortcomings:
– Instagram stories cannot be created in the web version.
– Comments below the post can’t be read.
Workaround 2 for Instagram Post Story Not Available
- The Post Story button shows up if you select multiple items to be included in a story.
- Add any other image alongside the main media.
- After that, delete the extras and keep only the photo or video that you really wanted to post.
Thanks Carolina for this tip.
Workaround 3 for Instagram Post Story Missing on iPad
- 1. Download Meta Business Suite on iPad, from the App Store. (direct link)
- 2. Log-in with your Facebook account.
- 3. Confirm that you want to manage your Instagram account too.
- 4. Allow access to Instagram meessages in inbox.
- 5. Tap the + icon and choose Story. Create a story and select your Instagram account as source for posting!

Yes please fix ! This is frustrating !
Thanks for confirming.
Same problem, no share button anywhere. Hope there will be a fix, thanks.
Thanks for confirming.
Same issue. Even with the new update I cannot post a story from my iPad, only my iPhone
Thanks for the follow up. Apparently they only added a fix for the ad network and the security patches and rushed the update. We should definitely see iPadOS 16.1.2 soon.
In addition to the inability to post stories and the app being smaller, I’ve noticed that when viewing others’ stories both the left and right sides are cropped out; making reading any text they include difficult. I forever regret updating my iPad and will only do it once more in the desperate hope that it corrects these inconveniences.
Thanks for reporting. What iPad model are you owning? It’s still possible to downgrade to iPadOS 15, however only for select models:

Very frustrating not being able to post stories on IG… wish I would have never upgraded to IOS 16.1 for my iPad… just fix this problem…lots of people will be happy. Can’t be that difficult….Right?
Yes, we know. It should be fixed. We’ve submitted feedback.
Thanks for submitting feedback! I have an iPad 12 pro and since the 16.1 update I cannot post stories. They show up on the stories screen ,but no button to go from there. Otherwise no issues. My iPhone I can share on stories on both accounts ,just once I have all the right tags or whatever there’s no share button on my actual stories. I use my iPad for my insta more than my phone because I can see better. Plus what’s the point of having such a nice product when I can’t do certain things and it is frustrating. I do approve this article and you submitting feedback. Thanks.
You’re welcome. Let’s hope they sort it out soon.
I’m using an iPad 4th gen. I can’t post stories, or repost other’s posts. Also, when scrolling, the images pass behind the header at the top of the page.
Not having it crash.
It’s not stuck small size.
Thanks for the feedback Bryan.
Same issue with my 4th gen 12.9 iPad Pro thought I was going crazy lol…but I found a workaround not super convenient but you’ll be able to post..you have to use the meta business suite you can post or schedule stories to be posted
Thanks for the contribution. We’ll update the tip in the main content of the article. It should help others.
The new iPad 6th gen won’t post instagram stories. No post button. Very inconvenient because I post art on my instagram. This needs to be fixed.
Yes, they have to address it. In the meantime please use Jb183’s workaround: “use the Meta Business Suite you can post or schedule stories to be posted.”
i have the ipad pro 2020 model, after updating im having the exact same issues as everyone else, cant post stories because there’s no post button, instagram is weirdly cropped in general, and overall i really need the story button because i draw artwork as a part-time job alongside my main job for income, and it makes it so much harder with it acting like this
Thanks for confirming. Jb183 mentioned a workaround: “you have to use the meta business suite you can post or schedule stories to be posted.”
I have an issue with the size of stories. They re too small and part of picture is cut off.
I’m experiencing the same problem since Oct. 25. I can’t post stories on instagram via my iPad Pro 5th Generation because it was affected by IPad 16 update. Post Story button is missing. It’s super annoying and frustrating! I hope they will fix it soon
Thanks for confirming. This should be fixed in an upcoming update. In the meantime you can use the Meta Business Suite app from the App Store. It will allow you to post story on Instagram from iPad.
Same problems. Only my iPad Pro 5th gen, with OS 16:
1. The app is weirdly cropped, right and left edges of others’ stories are gone (especially obvious with text stories)
2. No post button for stories.
3. Top edge of profile keeps slipping upward under a ‘heading,’ so you can’t see it.
Thanks for your extended feedback Chelsey. It’s been reported. Not sure who has to fix this though. Apple in iPadOS 16 or Meta with an Instagram app update in the App Store.
I have the IPad 12 pro 2020 version I believe. Mine happened after the recent update of 16.1 in October. Though my main issue is the post stories button is missing, I do have the weird heading so you can’t see certain things. I wish I could post a screen recording of this.
Yes! I have all those problems. Just got a brand new iPad Pro. So it’s on the newest model as well. So frustrating. I have been searching trying to find answers. So glad I’m not alone.
Finally someone is talking about this! Another workaround is selecting multiple to post together, then deleting the extras. The option only shows when I have multiple images selected. Do u have any guesses as to when they can fix this?
Thanks for this workaround Caroline. We will update it in the main content of the article to make it more visible.
Not sure when a fix will be released. We’ll update it here. Stay tuned.
Using multiple images worked for me too.
iPad 4th gen, iPad OS 16.1
Thanks for confirming.
Hey, same here on my Ipad Pro 12,9 2020, I can’t post story on my IG because buttons do not appear … It’s frustrating … I’ve submitted my bug report to Instagram and I’ve send email to Instagram support for IOS and IpadOS !
Thanks for confirming and for reporting.
How do you delete the extra unwanted images for the Instagram Story? Am I missing something obvious?
I have the iPad Pro 4th generation and as soon as I downloaded and updated to the IPadOS 16 I started having the same issues. I’m not able to post on my Instagram stories either no matter what I do. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app, I have rebooted my iPad, I have checked for updates for Instagram but NOTHING. I seriously hope they fix this QUICKLY! I even tried uninstalling the IPadOS 16 but I can’t. Very annoyed and disappointed
You have to use the workarounds mentioned in the article, for now.
None of those worked for me. I have tried them all
Sorry to hear this. You might have to wait for iPadOS 16.2 in this case, or revert to iPadOS 15 as shown here:
https://www.iphonetricks.org/downgrade-ipados-16-to-15-how-to-guide/
Thanks for posting this issue! I though I was the only one facing this problem.
You’re welcome. Let’s hope it will be fixed soon.
I just updated my iPad 4gen to OS 16.1.1 and still having the problem posting to story and the other issues. Really was hoping it would fix, but no. I suppose they lasted off the people who were working on it. :-(
Unfortunately both iOS 16.1.1 and iPadOS 16.1.1 have been rushed updates to fix and adnetwork bug. No other significant bug was addressed because they did not have time for that. I expect 16.1.2 before 16.2. There are still too many issues.
I just experimented with changing the Display Zoom setting in the iPad “Display and Brightness” controls, and changed it to View “Larger Text”
Now the Story post buttons show up! Yes!
Bingo! Thanks for sharing this workaround Brian. I will update it in the main content of the article.
That helped a lot! Now I can post stories, at least.
Thanks for confirming Kristin!
I tried doing that and it didn’t work for me sadly
I believe the issue is only on the higher resolution iPads not the cheap basic ones. Mine is a 2018 pro 12.9 my fiancés is the basic 2018 and the buttons show up with ios 16.1.
Thanks for the useful info Rob.
I have a iPad Pro (12.9-inch) (5th generation) and since I upgraded it Instagram is having lots of problems. I can’t post stories at all and the size shrunk and can’t be enlarged. I also used to be able to post stories directly from Twitter to my Instagram but that doesn’t work now either. Is it because of the mess at Twitter or because I upgraded? It’s massively frustrating!
Thanks for the detailed feedback Kristin. Regarding Post Story button missing you can use a workaround that has just been provided by Brian, which requires you to enlarge text size:
Open Settings and go for Display & Brightness.
Tap on Text Size.
Use the knob to text a larger text size.
Return to Instagram and try to post a story.
Yes, the option to enlarge the screen seems to be missing for some iPad models. That should be corrected in an upcoming software update.
3. Can you detail the Twitter issue? A screenshot is welcomed at contact[at]iphonetricks.org. Haven’t heard about it yet.
Sadly even the workaround doesn’t work for me. iPad Pro 5th gen. (2021)
Sorry to hear this. Not sure what else to suggest. iPadOS 16.2 should be released soon. Let’s hope it will address it.
Its not just stories that are a problem on the iPad. I’m also having a problem with regular posting. I can post images just fine, but I am unable to type any info or headers or add hashtags because the window where you type is now covered up with their reformatted framing. The work around for this is to post the image first, and then tap “edit” and then add the typed info and hashtags. Hopefully they will fix all these problems soon. This problem is extremely frustrating because my iPad Pro 5th Generation is my professional go-to tool for my art business and I use it to share my work and photos on social media. I find phones too frustratingly small for my eyesight and fingers.
Thanks for your extended feedback and for providing the workaround. We will update your info in the main content of the article. Yes, let’s hope that this will be addressed soon.
UPDATE – The space where I would type only gets covered up when I’m posting only 1 image. However when I post several images in one post, the area where one types shows up.
Yes, that’s true, it’s provided as a workaround in the article. Thanks for confirming.
The workaround for my iPad Pro M1 12.9 is by changing a Display Zoom by go to >> Settings >> Display & Brightness >> Display Zoom >> Select “Larger Text” and there you will see that story post button is back and instagram screen size is bigger. To make font and home screen look normal for my eyes I decreased font size and turned off “Use large home icon” so then I can have my home screen and icons that look like they are on a standard mode.
Thanks for your contribution. Let’s see if it helps others.
Thanks!!!! This is the only thing that worked for me!!!!
Thanks for confirming.
iPadOS 16.2 was released yesterday. Did this fix the issue?
Indeed. We’re still waiting for feedback:
https://www.iphonetricks.org/ipados-16-2-issues-features-bug-fixes/
Unfortunately, this is still messed up on iPadOS 16.2, and I’m not sure Instagram cares enough about iPad users to fix it.
Hi. I’m having the same issue on my iPad Pro . I cannot post my own stories or fully read others stories. When’s the fix coming?
To be honest, I’m not sure if a fix will come as Meta has not even bothered to release an Instagram app for iPad for such a long time now. I doubt that they will start debugging the iPhone app for iPad. But let’s hope that I’m wrong.
Use the workarounds presented in the article to continue using Instagram on iPad.
I got this to work once but now cannot replicate it…. 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 ios 16
Let’s see if anyone else has better luck….
– Go to SETTINGS
– Go to HOME SCREEN & MULTITASKING
– Select STAGE MANAGER
– Select USE STAGE MANAGER ON IPAD (Both recent Apps & Dock checked)
– Go to INSTAGRAM and post story from drafts (I had ipad rotated on its side)
Thanks for sharing.
Same issue here.
Not practical.
Will be waiting for an update soon!
Thank you for the ideas … I will be using Workaround 2 for my next stories.
You’re welcome. Fingers crossed.
I tried the font and no luck, then zoomed in the display and can see the post button again🙌
Great. Thanks for confirming.
Exactly the same problems and iPad Pro as Karin initially reported. Also Instagram keeps crashing.
I cannot ‘undo’ the upgrade – because I have no computer, I just have the iPad Pro ..
None of the workarounds is helpful to you?
Just found a solution for Instagram stories (I will have to change settings each time, because it’s not workable for other apps) :
. Settings : Display & Brightness : at the bottom ‘Display & Zoom’ : select ‘Larger Text’
Screen went black for a second here, but then it works.
Thanks for confirming.
Since Many months that i can’t Share stories in my iPad Pro 2018 and I tried already all the ways suggested and nothing works…. Some idea when this will be fixed? Thanks
iPadOS 16.3 has been released. Does it make any difference?
https://www.iphonetricks.org/ipados-16-3-features-issue-bug-fixes-problems/
Else, use the workarounds provided in the article please.
Instagram just want us to use it on the Phone. Thats it.
Cant post stories or share stories on instagram with my ipad, have tried the fix above, still not working. Everything on the sides gets cut off as well. And when I post reels the sides get cut off too. Very frustrating. I use my iPad for work and clients. Im a social media manager. Posting from the meta business app works for now. Really hope this gets fixed soon
Thanks for the feedback. Not sure if this will be fixed unless Meta releases an iPad app for FB.
Thank you. It’s just very frustrating, because it worked 100% before but now it just doesn’t anymore
Instagram op iPad is working again !!!!!!!!!! SO HAPPY !!!!!!
