iPhone 12 No 5G In Dual SIM Mode? (Workaround Available!)

iPhone 12 No 5G in Dual SIM

iPhone 12 No 5G in Dual SIM

Apple has put a lot of accent on the 5G technology that’s built-in to the new iPhone 12 lineup. However, it has now surfaced that the iPhone 12 lineup might not be able to connect to 5G when the Dual SIM mode is enabled. If true, this could be a major setback for users that strongly rely on using two phone numbers with the same iPhone!

At the time of writing, Apple doesn’t mention anything official about no 5G on the iPhone 12 in Dual SIM mode. It’s an internal document (published on Reddit), sent by Apple to carriers for training purposes, that informs that 5G won’t work on any iPhone 12 model when Dual SIM is activated. iOS 14 will automatically throttle the 5G connectivity to 4G LTE.

Does 5G Work with iPhone 12 Dual SIM?

That’s one of the questions from the FAQ provided in Apple’s document. The official answer being the one showcased in the screenshot uploaded below.
iPhone 12 Dual SIM no 5G confirmed by Apple internal document
This confirms that the iPhone 12 won’t be able to connect to 5G when Dual SIM mode is active. The superior speed data plan isn’t accessible on either of the two lines, both being throttled to 4G.

iPhone 12 Dual SIM 5G Fix

All iPhone 12 models (12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max) are compatible with Dual SIM mode!
A workaround to get 5G on Dual SIM requires you to temporary disable one of the lines. For example, you can use the eSIM only and if you’re running a 5G-supported carrier data plan, you’ll be able to connect to 5G data speeds.

This isn’t ideal but, the same source mentions that Apple is working on an official software fix that will be released until the end of 2020!

What Else Is Mentioned In The Document?

  • Staff is informed that millimeter wave support is currently provided only by U.S. carriers. This means that no 5G Ultra-Wideband is available outside of the United States.
  • A 5G enabled iPhone in the United States will work at the pace of 4G LTE when the user travels internationally, unless a second 5G compatible eSIM is purchased and use locally (as a single line, not in Dual SIM mode).
  • 5G doesn’t have to be turned on manually. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro automatically connects to 5G when available!
