Posted in Bug Fixes by Patricia on September 17, 2022Is the iPhone 14 Pro GPS not working after iOS 16.1 beta update? Apple Maps or Google Maps aren’t able to locate your position on the map? Current location jumps all over the place? This seems to be a widespread issue!
iPhone 14 Pro GPS Issue
This problem has been reported by Benji200 on our iOS 16.1 beta review page:
“iphone 14 pro gps not working properly after ios 16.1 beta update!”
We’ve found similar reports on the MacRumors forums:
“Same issue on 14 pro with 16.1… it’ll not lock on to location and it keeps jumping around.”
Apparently, this iPhone 14 GPS bug is only affecting devices updated to the iOS 16.1 beta version!
iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models aren’t affected. This suggests that the issue is also related to the new GPS technology included in the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max models, for a more accurate location service.
I’m talking about the new dual-frequency GPS support that allows the new iPhones to receive signals from GPS satellites operating on both L1 frequency and the higher-power L5 frequency. The later travels better through obstacles like buildings and trees and improve the GPS accuracy!
How To Fix iPhone 14 Pro GPS Not Working
This is an obvious software bug, so it can only be fixed by Apple via software update.
Update: Apple has fixed this issue in iOS 16.1 Beta 2 and will most probably provide the fix in the upcoming iOS 16.0.2! Stay tuned!
Fact: Many iPhone 14 users can end up running iOS 16.1 beta, if they transferred the data on the new iPhone from a previous model that was running the same beta!
Tip: To check what iOS 16 version your device is running go for Settings -> General -> About -> iOS version.
At the time of writing, iPhone 14 users can run iOS 16.0, iOS 16.0.1 (20A371) or iOS 16.1 beta (20B5045d). The last one is the version that includes the iPhone 14 GPS bug.
Workaround: If you don’t want to wait until Apple issues iOS 16.1 beta 2 to fix this problem you have the option to downgrade to iOS 16.0.1.
For this, you need Mac or Windows computer and a lightning to USB cable to connect. More details are available here.
