iPhone Back Tap Not Working In iOS 16 (Scroll Up, Down?)
Is Back Tap not working on iPhone after iOS 16 update? Double-taps and triple-taps aren’t recognized when this accessibility feature is set to Scroll Up or Scroll Down? You’re not the only one!
Back Tap Not Working iOS 16
This issue has been reported by Kevin:
“In iOs 16 on my iPhone 12 mini if you choose “Scroll down” or “Scroll up” as options for Back tapping, it doesn’t work anymore.”
We could replicate this issue on iPhone 12 Pro and 13 Pro models too. Bug seems to occur only when Scroll Gestures are selected. All other shortcuts work as expected!
Are you experiencing the same bug? Share it in the comments please. We’re using this thread to report the problem to Apple!
How To Fix Back Tap Not Working
Unfortunately, an iPhone restart doesn’t help. This bug has to be patched by Apple in an upcoming software update.
However, you can use Assistive Touch as a workaround:
- Open Settings -> Accessibility -> AssistiveTouch.
- Turn On AssistiveTouch.
- Tap the Digital Home Button.
- Go for, Scroll and use the available scroll functions.
Tip: You can also select any other Back Tap action in Settings -> Accessibility -> Touch -> Back Tap, excepting Swipe Gestures. They will work!
Have you managed to fix back taps not working in iOS 16? Do you have a better solution? Share your feedback in the comments!

iPhone 12 mini. Same problem :(
Oh shoot. Just noticed it was me originally to have reported that :-D
No problem. Btw this seems to have been fixed since iOS 16.1 Beta 2. So, the public release of iOS 16.1 should bring the fix to everyone.
I updated my software to 16.1 and the next second the back double tap button not working…nonsense
Try to turn Back Tap Off and then Back On in Settings -> Accessbility -> Touch. Does it help?
This worked thank you
Glad it did. Thanks for confirming.
I have the same problem with my i8+, the tap function on the back doesn’t work!
Thanks for reporting. Is this happening in iOS 16.1? Have you tried to restart device?
This same issue is happening with me my double tap is screanshot but is is not working
Thanks for reporting. Have you tried disabling the feature and re-enabling it? What iOS version are you using?
On iPhone 8+ the double and triple tap are not working for flashlight and screen capture. Thank you
Can you fix it with a restart?

I just updated my iPhone X. To iOS 16 and the back tap stop working. I’ve tired all options I know it didn’t work. This is a huge mistake, IPhone should pay attention to details.
Sorry to hear this. Can you confirm the exact iOS 16 version on your device in Settings -> About -> iOS Version? Is it 16.1.1?
Same problem with iOS 16.1.1.
Have turned feature off/restarted/forced restart, to no avail 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️.
Any other options?
Thanks for reporting. We will report the bug again as it seems more widespread post iOS 16.1.
P.S.: Have you tried to clean install iOS 16.1.1? Reinstall the current iOS version using a computer. It might flush any over-the-air glitches.
Thank you for you reply!
I really liked the feature, but I don’t know if I want to go that far (I know I’ll mess up something)…
I’ll just pretend double tap never existed and see what happens with a new iOS version.
Good day!
Sure. Keep in touch. Let us know if you notice a fix in the next update.
I just turned on double tap then restarted my phone and voila it worked. iOS 16.1.1 on X.
Glad it did. Thanks for confirming.
My iPhone 8 has OS16.1.1 and I have tried all the above tips but the back taps do still not work anymore whereas they used to before upgrading. Very annoying bug!
Thanks for sharing. If the fixes mentioned in the article won’t help, you can be patient and wait for iOS 16.2, or revert to iOS 15 or update to iOS 16.2 beta.
