Starting with macOS 12 Apple is allowing users to get all the important security updates, even if they choose not to update to the most recent macOS Monterey version. This is why macOS Big Sur 11.6.1 was released. It’s a minor update that focuses solely on security fixes!

This update is available over-the-air in System Preferences -> Software Update.
Important: because this is an optional update it won’t show up on the main screen. You will get macOS Monterey instead.
How to: Click on More info, available below the ‘Another update is available’ section. macOS Big Sur 11.6.1 should be now displayed on your screen. Tap Install Now and follow the on-screen prompts!
Fact: the macOS 11.6.1 update file is 2.56 GB large.
