Are you experiencing Netflix low resolution on Apple TV when the second episode of a TV Series starts? The first episode that you play runs at 4K, but when playback continues the following one is low quality and blurry?

This unexpected behavior has been reported by Ruby (tvOS 16.5):

“Not sure if it’s related to the update but netflix plays tv shows in low quality once the first episode ends.”

We couldn’t replicate the issue but have found similar complaints on Reddit:

“Second Netflix episode is low resolution”

How To Fix Netflix Low Quality on Apple TV

This issue seems to have flared up in the last couple of days and doesn’t seem to be related to the recent tvOS 16.5 software update. Netflix might be able to fix it server-side or via a software update!

In the meantime you can try the following:

1. Replay Episode

The quick fix requires you to go back and select the same episode again. However, if you plan a binge episodes, you have to repeat this sequence after each episode. Annoying indeed!

2. Reopen Netflix

Another way to fix it requires you to close the Netflix app and re-open it on your Apple TV:

  • 1. On the Siri Remote, double-press the TV button to bring up the App Switcher.
  • 2. With the Netflix app selected in the center of the screen, swipe up on the clickpad to force close the app.
  • 3. Return to the Home screen an open Netflix again!

3. Restart Apple TV

If you reached this step and Netflix streaming is still low quality when playing the second episode of a TV series, try to reboot the Apple TV:

  • Open Settings and go for System -> Restart.

4. Reinstall Netflix app

Last but not least you should try to reinstall Netflix on your Apple TV. This will make sure that you get the most recent version and also flush any lingering bugs:

  • 1. Open Settings and go for General -> Manage Storage.
  • 2. Search for Netflix in the list and select the Trash can icon.
  • 3. Go for Delete.
    Tip: You can also try to offload. This will uninstall the app but preserve your settings. A reinstall button becomes available once the offload is finished.
  • 4. Open the App Store and reinstall Netflix.
