Posted in Errors and Issues by Mike on September 15, 2022Are you getting the Software Update Failed an error occurred downloading iOS 15.7 popup? Same issue repeats itself if you tap Cancel and restart the update process? You’re not the only one encountering this problem. Here is what you can do!
Software Update Failed Error
This issue has been reported by Nora on our iOS 15.7 review page:
“I am prompted with Software Update Failed every time I want to download ios 15.7!”
We couldn’t replicate the error but have found similar reports on Reddit.
How to Fix Software Update Failed In iOS 15.7
There are two potential causes for this error: overloaded Apple servers and an iPhone storage glitch that’s requiring more capacity than usual for the update to take place.
We recommend the following workarounds:
1. Restart iPhone
Rebooting device will cause minor glitches to be flushed out. Force restarting takes less than a minute and can do wonders.
Restart your device and try to update to iOS 15.7 once again. Does it work?
2. Free Up iPhone Storage
Some users have confirmed that they managed to get around this error, by freeing up extra space on their devices:
“I had 6 gig storage free on a 64GB iphone 11. freed up another 3 and it worked first time”
Tip: You can check and free up storage space in Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage.
More details about the Software Update Failed problem are available in our YouTube video:
3. Check Apple System Status Page
If Apple’s servers are busy or experience a downtime, the iOS 15.7 download fails and you’re prompted with the above popup.
You can check the status of Apple’s servers on their System Status page (direct link).
Fact: If an issue is confirmed, be patient and try to update later!

This helped me. I didn’t have enough storage space.
Thanks for confirming. Can you provide more details? How much storage did you have initially and how much more you freed up until it worked?
I’ve got enough storage, only used 56Gb from 128Gb so that should be plenty , I just turned the ph off to restart so I’m just waiting to see what happens …
Ok. Thanks for the feedback. Keep us updated.
If the accept t&c is not displayed then the update fails
Have you managed to make it work?
i have enough storage and restarted but it still says error downloading it.
What software are you trying to update iOS 15.7, iOS 16 or iOS 16.0.1?
Same with me – I want to upgrade from 15.1.1 to 15.7, have 4.3GB free storage and still have error each time.
Just free up more. Try to go over 8 GB free and it should work.
iOS 15.7 update shows it has a file size of about 360 MB, however it needs much more space than that to unpackaged and install. I’ve found 7.6 GB was enough free storage space to get a successful update installed. I had failed update errors up to and including 6.4 GB of free space (iOS 15.7 onto 128 GB iPhone XR worked with 120.4 MB used). One suggestion is transfer videos or photos to a laptop, desktop or iPad, then delete from iPhone. Remember to empty the folder of those deleted at the end of the list of photo albums to get the space. Closing background running apps and a fresh power recycle is probably a better state to begin.
Thanks for the contribution and for the extended feedback.
I had 4G free disk space and had constant failures for 15.7 on my iPhone 11 even after restarting and trying on separate days. I deleted some books and now have 9G free – update then worked on first attempt after freeing the extra space
Yes, thanks for confirming Richard. This is the fix. You have to free up much more than you think it would need, to clear this bug.
I have the update downloaded but it won’t install on my iPhone. Getting:
Unable to Install Update
An error occurred installing iOS 15.7.

> Remind Me Later
Thanks for reporting.
1. Go to Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage. Look for the update file and remove it.
2. Force Restart iPhone.
3. Return to Settings -> General -> Software Update and start over.
where is the update file located in iphone storage?
It depends on what apps you have on the device. The files are listed in descending order from the one that’s occupying the largest storage space to the smallest one. The easiest way to detect it is by using the search function. Type iOS 15.7 or the software version you’re looking for.

Hi. How can we help?
Trying to upgrade from iOS 11 to 15.7. locked out of WhatsApp as need ios 12. iPhone6s downloads ios update but won’t install. I have 8gb storage before downloading. Tried again and again by deleting file, force reboot and retry. Don’t know what else to do.
Hi I ask how to install 15.7 iOS errors
Connect iPhone to computer Mac or Windows and use Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows) to update iPhone via the Lightning to USB cable.
This worked for me. I freed up some storage and i was able to download and install the update. I had a little over 59 GB used out of 64 GB. I got it down to 47.4 GB and it worked. Thanks for the help.
Glad it did. You’re welcome. Thanks for confirming.
Had about 6GB free and kept getting the error message — I cleared some crap and got to about 14GB free and it’s working now.
Glad it does. Thanks for confirming.
removing old profile and restarting the phone worked.
