Unable To Check For Update iOS 16.1 Bug? (Fix?)
Last updated on October 6th, 2022 at 12:53 pm
Posted in Errors and Issues by Mike on September 15, 2022Are you getting the Unable to check for Update error while trying to update software on iPhone or iPad? Popup informs that an error occurred while checking for a software update and gives you the option to Cancel or Try Again?
Unable To Check For Update Error
This issue has been reported by Lars on our iOS 16.1 beta review page:
“Unable to check for update error when trying to search for Software Update.”
Problem has been confirmed by Pulin and Javier:
“Yup same issue here in ipad mini and ipad 12.”
We could replicate too and it seems that we’re dealing with a widespread bug, as we’ve seen similar reports on Twitter.
How To Fix Unable To Check For Update
Tap Try Again and the error will pop up in a loop! Going for Cancel and restarting device doesn’t fix it either!
1. Restart iPhone
The issue can be triggered if iPhone isn’t connected to the Internet. However, if this is the case the text of the popup is slightly different, as seen in the screenshot provided nearby:
“Checking for software update failed because you are not connected to the Internet”
Fact: A reboot could bring your device back online! Use the force restart trick.
2. Reinstall iOS 16 Beta Profile
Remove and re-add iOS 16 Configuration profile in Settings -> General -> VPN & Device Management.
Update: This troubleshooting method doesn’t seem to solve this iOS 16.1 beta issue.
3. Reinstall TestFlight Apps
This error was fixed in the past, by removing TestFlight apps and reinstalling them.
However, we’ve tried this workaround in iOS 16.1 beta and the ‘Unable to check error’ still shows up. Does it work for you?
4. Be Patient
The error is most likely caused by an erroneous setting on Apple’s servers. It might be fixed by Apple, server-side, before iOS 16.1 Beta 2 is released. We’ve reported it using the Feedback app.
Update: Apple has fixed this issue, server-side, as expected. Error should not occur anymore!

On my 13 Pro I have the same issue
Thanks for confirming. We’ve submitted feedback to Apple: FB11516160
I did the same – FB11515567
The same goes to me on this issue.
Same error, iPhone X
Same issue on 13 Pro Max
Hi,
The issue seems to be fixed now, I don’t get the error message anymore.
Yes. Problem solved.
Great. Thanks for confirming!
Great. Thanks for letting us know!
Finally, back to normal. No more error when checking for update. How did it resolve? I put my 13 Pro on flight mode overnight. When waking up, release the flight mode and internet connection run. Upon checking on software update, there you go! iOS 16.1 appeared as it supposed to be.
Thanks for confirming. It was fixed server-side by Apple. Probably, they restarted the update servers.
Not fixed for me
Go to Safari. Type beta.apple.com.
Log in. Install ipados or ios 16 beta software profile. This should take of “Unable to check update” bug.
Thanks for sharing M. Lee!
My issue is I’m trying to delete the beta profile and install the stable version of iOS 16. But when I delete the profile me try to search the current stable version of iOS 16 I get “ unable to search for update “ message . I’ve reinstalled the beta profile and it did pull up iOS 16.1 but that it still the beta version. I want the stable version not beta version.
To go back to the public version which is iOS 16.0.1 you need to Restore iPhone using a computer Mac (with Finder app) or Windows (with iTunes software). You also need a backup to restore the device from once it is downgraded to iOS 16.0. However, the backup has to be from before you updated to iOS 16.1.
I don’t have a back up from before beta version installed. What are my options? Bought a 14pro and unable to transfer the data without installing the beta version in Iphone 14 pro. Due to the BETA version in 14pro, it is giving rattling noise when the lighting cabled connected to mobile charging port. Already complained to APPLE, seems they don’t have any solution. Can’t loose my data in old mobile. Please suggest any other option to resolve the issue.
iOS 16.1 Public beta 3 will be released today. We’re currently testing out the Developer Beta 3. Stay tuned as we will publish an article soon. The next step for you would be to upgrade to Beta 3 and see if the issues get sorted out.
P.S.: Can you send a short video that shows the rattling nose when you connect the cable to the Lightning port?
I have the same issue with iOS 16.1 Beta 3. I deleted the beta profile, and when I try to search for an update, it gives “unable to search for update” message. I want to be able to update to the stable version when it gets released.
You have two options:
1. Stay on the beta until iOS 16.1 is released to the public.
2. Downgrade from iOS 16.1 beta to the most recent public version which currently is iOS 16.0.2 as shown here:
