This unexpected behavior has been reported by Nando:

“Swipe to change watch face doesn’t work after installing watchOS 10 beta!”

We could replicate it after updating to watchOS 10 like everyone is able too!

Apparently, Apple has removed the swipe to change Watch Face functionality after numerous complaints from users that found themselves starring at a different Watch Face because of accidental swipes.

How To Change Watch Face In watchOS 10

It’s unclear yet if Apple will decide to implement a toggle in Settings that will allow users to enable and disable Swipe to change Watch Face functionality.

However, until then the only way to change Watch Face on Apple Watch is by proceeding as follows:

• 1. Tap & hold on the Watch Face to enter Edit mode.
• 2. Swipe left or right, or turn the Digital Crown to browse between the configured Watch Faces.
• 3. Tap the Watch Face that you want to switch for!

Fact: Siri isn’t able to change Watch Face if you ask it too. A annoying reply: ‘That might be beyond my abilities at the moment.’

Now with the feature gone many users claim that they’re missing it. In this Reddit post opinions seem to be split:

“I never thought I would miss this until it was gone and I definitely do.”
