iOS 16.7 Features

The release notes highlight 6 new changes including:

• 1. 21 new emoji including animals, hand gestures and objects can be found in the emoji keyboard.
• 2. Voice Isolation for mobile calls prioritizes your voice and blocks out ambient noise around you.
• 3. Duplicates album in Photos expands support to detect duplicate photos and videos in an iCloud Shared Photo Library.
• 4. Notifications for web apps added to the Home Screen.
• 5. VoiceOver support for maps in the Weather app.
• 6. Accessibility setting to automatically dim video when flashes of light or strobe effects are detected.

iOS 16.7 Bugs Fixed

The update log mentions three features that have been addressed:

• 1. Ask to Buy requests from children not showing on the parent’s device has been solved.
• 2. Matter-compatible thermostats unresponsive when paired to Apple Home has been fixed.
• 3. Crash Detection has been optimized on iPhone 14 and 14 Pro models.

iOS 16.7 Security Fixes

The security document of this update mentions three vulnerabilities that have been patched:

Kernel

Issue: A local attacker may be able to elevate their privileges. This may have been actively exploited in previous versions.
Fix: The issue was fixed with improved checks.

Security

Issue: A malicious app may be able to bypass signature validation. This may have been actively exploited in previous versions.
Fix: A certificat validation issue was resolved.

WebKit

Issue: Processing web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. This may have been actively exploited in previous versions.
Fix: The issue was fixed with improved checks.

Fact: These are the same security fixes implemented in iOS 17.0.1.

iOS 16.7 Download

As usual, this update is available over-the-air and / or via wire using Finder (on Mac) or iTunes (on Windows/PC):

• 1. Open Settings -> General -> Software Update on an iPhone 8 or later.
• 2. iOS 16.7 should show up on the Software Update screen.
• 3. Tap Download and Install.
• 4. Agree with ToS, input Passcode and be patient until the new software is requested, downloaded, prepared, verified and installed on your device!
