YouTube Auto Translate Not Working iOS 16?
This issue has been reported by Mike (iPadOS 16.1.1):
“Youtube auto translate to english doesn’t display. Small box on screen where close caption would normally be.”
We’ve couldn’t replicate this unexpected behavior on iPad or iPhone running versions 16.1.1 and 16.1.2.
We also couldn’t find any similar reports online, excepting some outdated ones from 10 months ago when the YouTube auto-translate feature was just rolling out and users where complaining about Youtube auto translate not available!
How To Fix YouTube Auto Translate Captions Not Working
If you’re experiencing this problem here is what to do:
1. Cycle Closed Captions
Turn subtitles Off and back On and see if it helps:
- Play the YouTube video that you want to see the translation.
- Tap the screen to unveil the options.
- Tap CC icon to turn Off the subtitles (assuming they’re already enabled).
- Wait a couple of seconds and turn them back ON.
- Press the gear icon and tap on Captions.
- Go for Auto-translate and select English or any other language available that suits you.
2. Reinstall YouTube
Your next option is to remove the app and reinstall it. You have two options: Offload or Delete completely:
- Try offloading first: Settings -> General -> iPad (iPhone) storage -> YouTube -> Offload App -> Reinstall App.
- If that doesn’t work go for Delete App, the remove YouTube completely from your device and install again from the App Store (direct link).
3. Update To iOS 16.2 or later
Nguyen confirmed that YouTube auto-translate is fixed on iPhone after iOS 16.2 update.
We recommend you to update, you haven’t already and confirm the fix in the comments!

I’m having the same issue. I tried all off the suggestions to correct the issue, but none have fixed it.
Sorry to hear this. Keep an eye on the YouTube app in the App Store and update as soon as a new version becomes available. Also, iOS 16.2 will be released in a few days. Let us know if it helps.
Translated from Italian:
also i have same problem on mac m1 2021
“anche io stesso problema su mac m1 2021”
Thanks for reporting. macOS 13.1 will be released tomorrow, December 13. Let us know if it helps.
Same for me. I can select the option, but the translation doesn’t work anymore
Thanks for confirming. Google will most likely have to fix this in an upcoming App Store update of the YouTube app. In the meantime, iOS 16.2 will be released tomorrow. Let us know if it helps.
Prior to uninstalling and reinstalling YouTube I had English as an option in auto translate. This option no longer exists.
That’s strange. Have you tried it with multiple videos? None of them comes with English as an option?
I’m having the same issue using the auto translate with my iPad.
Thanks for reporting. Is it still happening after updating to iPadOS 16.2?

Looks like auto-translate is back in Youtube after my phone is updated with iOS 16.2
Thanks for the confirmation. Glad to hear it! Anyone else noticing the same?
The issue is back. The clips I watched a few days ago had more translations, now the small tiny black box appears.
Uh… Not sure what else to suggest at the moment. Let us know if you have any breakthrough.
