Having HBO Max frame rate issues when using the tvOS app? Encountering problems with framerate matching on Apple TV when an auto preview starts in the Max app? Rate doesn’t revert when you switch away from the preview and you browse the app at 24 fps?

This bug has been reported by Adnan:
“Max app is currently rubbish on Apple TV! Am I the only one having frame rate issues. It’s like 24fps when browsing the app after moving away from an auto preview! Any help?”
We can replicate the problem and have found numerous other complaints on Reddit:
“Currently HDR is of course messed up and framerate matching is even worse. If you open the app and an auto preview starts playing, it literally changes the framerate for the god damn preview.”
How To Fix MAX Frame Rate Issues On Apple TV
Obviously the app has to be improved by HBO in an upcoming software update. Until then, you can apply the following workarounds:
1. Turn Off Auto Previews
- 1. Open Max app on Apple TV and go to Settings.
- 2. Disable auto previews.
- 3. Force close the app.
- 4. Reopen Max app.
Update:
2. Update To tvOS 16.6 Beta
This might not be an HBO Max issue after all. A Reddit user confirmed that the Max frame rate issues and content matching has been fixed in the upcoming tvOS version. That’s tvOS 16.6 beta!
Fact: If you don’t want to install a beta version on your Apple TV, wait it out a couple of days as tvOS 16.6 will be released to the public in the last week of July!
3. Screencast From iPhone
Another workaround for the HBO Max frame rate problems requires you to screencast your favorite shows from your iOS device:
- 1. Open Max app on your iPhone.
- 2. Play the desired TV Show.
- 3. Use the screencast button and airplay the content to Apple TV.
