New Gmail icon on iPhone Home Screen

Gmail for iOS has been updated with a new icon. Version 6.0.201004 brings a new look on the Home Screen for Gmail. The popular mail client is now represented by an ‘M’ letter that packs all four colors used by the Google brand: blue, red, yellow and green. The red tone is still predominant, while yellow gets the smallest cut of the share.

The envelope isn’t that obvious anymore as the ‘M’ letter, which obviously hints to Mail, now appears to be displayed on a white background, making the old envelope less visible!

How To Get The New Gmail Icon

You only have to update Gmail for iOS or iPadOS to the latest version (direct link).

Trick To Keep Old Gmail Icon

Are you the conservative type of person and would prefer to continue to use the old version of the Gmail icon? Google doesn’t provide an option to change it but an iOS 14 trick will allow you to assign and use any image from the Photos app as an app icon for Gmail:
1. Save the old Gmail icon, available above, to the Photos app.
2. Use this step-by-step tutorial that shows how to change the Home Screen app icon in iOS 14. A how to video is also included.
Fact: This workaround will allow you to only change the Home Screen app icon. The new Gmail icon will be still displayed in App Switcher and Spotlight Search.
