M1 MacBook Battery Health Issue (Maximum Capacity Bug?)
Last updated on December 6th, 2022 at 05:06 am
Posted in TILs by Tyrone on November 30, 2020Is your brand new M1 Macbook showing a maximum battery capacity value less than 100%? You’re not the only one. We’ve just received a report from a M1 MacBook Air owner that sees a maximum capacity of 98% after a single week of usage. Apple’s M1 Silicone chip offers great energy efficiency and thus a spectacular battery life! Should you be worried by this early downtrend of the battery health?
We’ve found a similar report on Reddit, from an user claiming that the same model is showing the identical 98% Maximum Capacity value, after just nine charging cycles. More, the same user claims that the percentage went down from 100% to 98% in just a couple of hours. Could this be a macOS Big Sur bug, or the Mac M1 has a battery problem?
M1 MacBook Battery Issue?
It’s too early to tell if this is just a macOS 11.0.1 glitch, that causes battery health calibration errors, or if the battery that’s packing the M1 Macbook is aging faster than normal. We’ve published this article to help to raise awareness and gather reactions from other 2020 MacBook owners. If you notice a similar premature battery ageing trend please use the comments section and share your feedback.
How To Check MacBook Battery Health
To see the current condition of your Macs battery proceed as follows:
- Open System Preferences from the Dock.
- Click on Battery, in the left sidebar.
- Open Battery Health…
- Check the value next to the Maximum Capacity label.
Fact: This is a measure of battery capacity relative to when it was new.
Trick To Unveil M1 MacBook Maximum Battery Capacity
You can double-check if the Battery Health reading in System Settings is correct using Terminal:
- 1. Open Terminal, using command + spacebar combo.
- 2. Copy/paste the following command:
ioreg -l -w0 | grep Capacity
- 3. Click Return key to execute.
- 4. Maximum Capacity value will be displayed right above “DesignCapacity”.
How To Find Out MacBook Battery Charge Cycles
- Click the Apple logo in the, top-left corner of the screen and select About This Mac.
- Open System Report…, from the Overview tab.
- Click On Power, in the Hardware section of the sidebar.
- Check the Cycle Count, in the Health Information section of the Battery Information category.
M1 MacBook Battery Life
Ever since the release of the new MacBook computers equipped with the Apple M1 Silicone chip, users have reported about impressive battery duration, when compared to the Intel-based Macs.
M1 Mac battery life is great and a 98% maximum capacity value shouldn’t influence it too much. However, users have to keep this under observation to see if the battery health continues to degrade at an abnormal rate.
If this is a macOS 11.0.1 Big Sur problem, the Maximum Capacity should correct itself, when Apple issues a software update with a fix.
Does your M1 Mac also show signs of premature battery ageing? Please share your feedback in the comments section. Do mention your Mac model as well as how long you’ve owned the machine for.

Same to me…
Macbook Air, just shipped, opened, 75% of maximum capacity
mrmcphisto, thanks for reporting this. Wow 75%! … something’s definitely wrong. You can attempt to reinstall macOS Big Sur and see if the Maximum Capacity value is reset. Else, you have to bring the device back to an Apple Store.
Hi Patricia,
just erased disk and reinstall to see if it is better, i’ll update this post later
Please don’t!! On M1’s, there’s a bug/difference in how the system works that will soft brick it, and you’ll need another Mac to fix it, and a lot of hours.
Performance information:
Cycle count: 32
Status: normal
Maximum capacity: 94%
For how long is your MacBook in use?
I have the same stats as xin wang above. Computer was purchased mid-April 2021 so it is very new. Very disappointed.
Thanks for reporting. Keep us updated please. If the numbers continue to go down too fast.
Just fresh reinstalled big sur, now maximum capacity from 75 to 78 but always so poor.
What a shame…
Thanks for updating us. Can you please provide take a screenshot of the maximum capacity value and send it to us at: contact@iphonetricks.org ?
We will add it to the article and use this topic to submit feedback to Apple about this issue!
Hi, I’m the original author of the Reddit post (Mr_BananaPants).
I will receive my new replacement MacBook Air M1 today (I still got the old one with bad battery life) and will put both of them side by side to see if mine was really defective and the new one has better battery life. I will keep you updated.
Joran, thanks for commenting. Yes, your Reddit post was a confirmation for this problem, as soon as we received a similar bug report from Jorge. Would really appreciate if you can post an update as soon as you receive your replacement computer and make the comparison.
Hi, I just got the new MacBook air. Turns out this one is also defective: the display has a yellow / orange tint.
I contacted apple and they confirmed this 2nd MacBook is also defective…
Joran, that’s crazy. So, now we have a yellow tint issue for the new Macs too. iPhone 12 yellow screen is discussed here: https://www.iphonetricks.org/how-to-fix-iphone-12-yellow-screen-display/
P.S.: What about the Battery Health? Are you planning to switch this one for a third unit, or you plan to ask for a refund?
So I will put both of them side by side to see if the battery life is better on the “new” one. I will definitely return it since I’m a photographer and need accurate colors. Max capacity is still 100% on the new one. I’ll keep you updated.
Joran, thanks for reporting. Keep in touch!
i received my mbp with m1 yesterday and from the start, it showed a battery life of 71%.
Michael, thanks reporting. That’s not pleasant at all. Have you updated to macOS Big Sur 11.1 to see if the maximum battery capacity changes?
Yes I did install the update right away, but nothing changed. Apple support told me to send the unit back. That’s rather disappointing as I had to wait a full month for it.
Michael, thanks for getting back to us. Yes, unfortunately you’re doing with a faulty battery out of the box. It’s a pity that you have to wait again, but at least you will get a proper unit. Do let us know when the replacement unit arrives. I’m curious if Apple will prioritize this for you.
Same here, MacBook Pro M1 with 98% battery health after 3 charge cycles. I had a previous unit which had 101% health after 9 cycles, so clearly there is an issue with random ones.
Thanks for sharing your battery health anomaly. Do you have an update later on? Has the value stabilized at 98%?
I received my MBP M1 16gb 1TB January 18,2021 after only using for 3 days and charge it 3 times got an error message (The battery’s capacity is significantly reduced. To restore capacity, please check your service options.) and the funny thing it shows the capacity at 100%. Also the camera image quality is junk! Im sending it back for a replacement. Gotta be careful with Apple! My last 2014 MPB had an issue with the reflective coat in the screen not only till the warranty expired that Apple put a service note in their website.
Bay, can you update us on this please? Did you get a replacement unit?
I only have 9 battery cycles, and in the battery settings my battery health is at 100%, yet I cannot get rid of the “Service recommended” error in battery settings. recalibrating the battery did not help either. What can I do about this if I can’t reset the SMC?
Hi Ali – exactly the same problem 13 cycles and 3 weeks of use. Apple support gave up and recommended a return but I’m waiting for the shops to re-open as I can’t do without it at the moment. Like you, the battery is behaving perfectly (so far!) so I suspect a reporting issue rather than hardware. Perhaps the next incremental update will sort. Otherwise the machine is great!!
Thanks for sharing this Nick. Keep us updated about how your replacement turns out.
Have you tried to contact Apple support and see what solution they offer?
Hi Ali – update. Finally made it into an Apple store where they ran diagnostics and reinstalled the OS – same error message. The Mac was therefore sent to their ‘depot’ for battery replacement. The tech guy at the store was concerned that they would also find nothing and just return the Mac with the same problem – which is EXACTLY what happened, despite his copious notes to try and avoid this. It arrived back yesterday afternoon still with the battery error. I rang Apple support who said that they would need to take it back in for a replacement battery. My point then was that we could just get into a loop here as it seems that the error only appears on the desktop. Obviously, they can’t access this so couldn’t see what I and the tech guy were seeing. Anyway, back to the Apple store where I was fortunate enough to be able to see the same guy – thus saving another 5 minutes of explanations. He did two things – one was to talk to his manager to get the battery (whole top of the case) replaced in the store, and the second was to set up a ‘test’ account so they could access the desktop after the work had been completed. It’ll be away for a week as they have to order the parts but I don’t really care – I just want to get this sorted!
Thanks for the detailed feedback. Waiting for you to confirm the fix. Fingers crossed. Would be also interesting if you can share the official cause of the issue.
Hi – all fixed and (fingers crossed) behaving normally. The official cause was a faulty battery replaced under warranty. Hopefully this will continue!
Thanks for the confirmation. Fingers crossed!
My Macbook Air M1:
Health: 2% !!
Cycles: 33
Condition: Service Bettery
Design Capacity: 4382mAh
Current Capacity: 100mAh
Manufacture Date: 7 Nov 2020
But…. I can still use it for 8+ hours straight after charging.
I had the machine running a couple of nights with a heavy duty process and in the morning the battery was empty as I expected.
I think it’s just a software issue.
Crazy. Did a software update fix your problem?
MacBook Air M1, 39 cycles, 98%. (4 months in use). Is this normal, or should I worry?
This is normal. Continue to keep an eye on it.
MacBook Air M1 (4 months in use)
Cycle Count: 80
Condition: Normal
Maximum Capacity: 99 %
Is this normal or??
Yes, this looks like a normal value. Thanks for reporting.
Name: Macbook Air M1 8gb
Use: 3 months
charge cycles: 34-40
Battery health: 97%
is it normal ??
I think it is. Just keep it under observation. Was it at 100% when you first used the device? Did it drop to 97% gradually or within one update?
I have MacBook Pro M1 with 42 cycles and battery health of 93%
That’s quite low in my opinion, for just 42 cycles. Have you tried to contact Apple support and ask about it?
MacBook Air M1 8gb 256gb
Almost 3 Months in use
Cycle Count: 86
Condition: Normal
Maximum Capacity: 99%
Is this normal?
I charge it immediately once it hits below 30%. Unplug it once it hits 100% but there were very few times I overcharged.
Battery lasts for about 6-8 hours of medium-heavy work and zoom meetings. And more than 8 hours if I only use it for reading and writing.
During the first week though, the battery lasts more than 12-13 hours, I couldn’t reach that anymore.
Thanks for reporting, that’s interesting. Can you please also mention what macOS Big Sur version you’re on? Have you updated to the latest macOS 11.4?
Hi yes, it is always up to date. It’s currently 11.4.
I use a Dell external monitor, does it also affect the m1 battery performance even though the monitor is also plugged into a power source?
I’ve also used a USB hub for only about 2 weeks.
Thanks for getting back. Yes, I’ve noticed too that using an USB hub will deplete the battery much faster. I did a couple of test and it drains the battery with up to 40% faster. Unplug the hub and your M1 MacBook Air should return to the 12-13 hours of battery life!
Macbook Air M1, 67 cycle, 4 months, 99%is it still normal? I followed the tips I’ve read that I should keep it charged if I am using it for 8hrs or more to maximize the cycle count but my battery health says it is already 99%.
Yes, dropping 1% in 4 months is perfectly normal. Regarding the tips that say that you should keep it plugged in, use them moderately. Apple recommends that you discharge the battery at least once a month, so doing it weekly will help the battery and still keep the battery cycles low. At the end of the day an accumulator is made to be charged and discharged, not to stay charged continuously.
i bought mine 4 days ago brand new from the box (M1 Chip). charged it just twice already and its at 18 cycle count with 2% design capacity on coconut battery. but the battery works pretty fine and lasts a whole day of internet use and movie streaming. do i need to worry about this and have it changed or what?
Did you buy by any chance a refurbished M1 Mac or a resealed unit? If you got it for a price discount, you’ve probably got a good trade off. 16 (18-2 cycles) isn’t something that you should worry about. Especially, if you confirm that the battery lasts for a full day of moderate usage. I wouldn’t worry about it. Just enjoy your new computer!
Macbook pro M1 6months use battery 95% is that ok?
Yes, that should be within parameters.

Thanks for sharing this detailed report. What does the macOS 11 built-in Maximum Capacity stat show? Does it confirm the 89% Battery Health?
Nevertheless, an 11% drop in 6 months and 56 charging cycles is worrisome.
Are your charging habits healthy? Is your battery draining often to values lower than 20%? Are you using your MacBook plugged-in a lot?
Welcome. Nope, macOS does not confirm the 89%. macOS shows 95%, condition “normal”. I don’t let my MBP drain below 30% (well, sometimes, but you can count with one hand), I use it mostly plugged-out. I know this behaviour for MacBooks that run plugged-in most time. What I do is using it on battery, plug it in at 30% and plug it out when I need it somewhere else, or let it charge to 100% and plug it out then. Sometimes the 89% get higher to 91%. My environment should be also very battery friendly, not over 21°C, no sun etc. Gladly, I got Apple Care, so I’ll let them swap the battery soon.
When I look at my iPad Air and my iPhone 12 Pro, both are much better. iPhone got 98% after 8 month with 152 cycles. iPad 98% after 7 month with 43 cycles.
Thanks for clarifying. Indeed those conditions are ideal.
However, I thought you need AppleCare+ to be able to swap the battery. More, if they use the macOS Maximum Capacity reading (95%), they could claim that your battery usage curve is within normal parameters.
Are your iPad Air and iPhone 12 Pro battery health values from Coconut, iOS/iPadOS readings?
No Problem. Of course, I got Apple Care+. You’re right, I had a nearly identical situation with my MBP 2017, but after they dig deeper, they found a faulty battery cell and replaced the battery. But for now, I’ve to wait until it drops more down, I guess.
iPad/iPhone values came from coconut, but they’re identical to values iPadOS/iOS are reporting.
Yes, that makes sense.
That’s interesting with the coconut values. For iOS / iPadOS devices they usually match the value of the built-in Battery Health tool, while on M1 Mac they are different. I assume that there’s a bug/glitch in macOS that makes Big Sur display inexact Maximum Capacity values.
Charge Information:
The battery’s charge is below the critical level.: No
Fully Charged: Yes
Charging: No
State of Charge (%): 100
Health Information:
Cycle Count: 36
Condition: Normal
Maximum Capacity: 82%
Steve can you also please mention the age of your MacBook, like manufacturing date? Is it an M1? Battery charge cycles are not always relevant because you can use a MacBook always plugged-in for years, and the battery will degrade to a point where 82% seems normal. If this is an M1 with 36 cycles, it’s not normal at all!
54 cycles and 98% in 3 months, is this normal also coconut is showing 93%!!!!!
Yes, it’s normal. 98% for 3 months of usage isn’t bad at all.
I am having a battery issue with the 16Gb/1Tb Macbook Pro M1.
The battery capacity is currently 4710 mah (designed 5103 mah) after only 30 cycles. The battery is 210 days old. I primarily used this mac with LG Ultrafine 5K (Apple recommended display).
Battery health on Mac is showing 98%. Coconut Battery is showing 93% of battery health.
My wife has the same mac and the same battery age but after 100 cycles she is still having 100% of battery health and 5000 mah battery capacity.
Do you think this is a battery issue? Does it worth going to the Apple store to resolve the issue while the mac is still under warranty?
I think that Apple service will tell you that the 98% Maximum Capacity value is normal. Compared to your wife have you used your MacBook mostly plugged-in? Or you used it less often, because you have less cycles in a longer timeframe. It seems that she has used it always unplugged, 100 cycles in 210 days, and allowed the battery to work as it should, while you mostly kept in plugged-in. This could cause the difference.
Try to use your computer only on battery for a couple of charges and plug it in every time it reaches the 30% range. Unplug it immediately as it’s fully charged. Do you get any positive changes in the Coconut battery readings?
I am concerned that my battery may be dead. I have traveled overseas, wondering if the battery could have been damaged in flight. My Macbook Air only works while plugged, and shuts off immediately when not plugged. Please let me know what you think! Thanks.

Kimberly thanks for sharing this. Yes, that looks very wrong indeed. Does the Maximum Capacity value in Battery Health show the same 1%?
Your MacBook’s battery seems fried. Only a faulty battery can die after 32 cycles and 86 days of age.
Is there anything out of the ordinary that might have happened to your Mac? I don’t see how flying could harm it. Perhaps the Xray machine at the airport security check? Have you tried to contact Apple Support?
Have you check your M1’s battery capacity before flying? Did it degrade over its short lifespan or everything happened after your flight?
Thanks for your reply.
Yes, the Before traveling, the battery worked fine without being plugged. I did check my batteries capacity and it seemed normal as I have only recently purchased this Macbook Air. I’m in a hot climate (west Africa), but I don’t know if that would be a big deal to the battery. Looks like I’ll need to take it to Apple Support to figure out the issue. Thanks.
Thanks for clarifying. Did you by any chance let your device exposed to direct sunlight in the hot environment of your new location? Your battery might have literally fried. Does it show any physical signs, like being swollen on the left or right side of the trackpad?
Hope you can fix this soon. Please get back to us after you visit Apple Support and share with us what happened.
MacBook Air M1 8gb 256gb
Almost 2 Months in use
Cycle Count: 44
Maximum Capacity: 99%
Is this normal?
Yes, this is perfectly normal.
My cycle count is 24 and battery health 98%
I purchased MacBook Air M1 on 20 April 2020 and today it is 26 June 2021
And I keep my Bluetooth on all time and rest all are under control
Any suggestions and whether I have to worry for the battery health or not coz ppl are having 100% after use of six months also
In my opinion 98% Battery Health after more than one year is perfectly normal. You only have 24 cycles, but you’re actively using your MacBook correct? I mean you also use it plugged in?
No actually sorry not one year only 3 months are completed by mistake it’s 2020…..I bought it on 20 April 2021 sorry by mistake and today its only 98%
I am a student so I often use google meet and college work is done on it
And my Bluetooth is always on and battery health is 98%
I charge it when my MacBook is at 20%
So any advice please
Thanks for getting back. 98% shouldn’t worry you yet. Continue to keep an eye on it and see if it continues to drop at the same pace. If possible, I would recommend charging at 30% and avoid keeping it plugged in for a very long time after it reaches 100%.
Can you help me?
MacBook Pro M1 16gb 500gb
7 Months in use (I use a lot, my working machine)
Cycle Count: 100
Maximum Capacity: 89%
Is this normal? Could I be worried about this?
11% decrease in 7 months is quite significant. Have you tried to contact Apple support and ask their opinion about it?
Not yet, I will try to contact them today
Thanks for the follow up. Keep us updated please.
battery maximum capacity shows 99% after just 39 battery cycles on my MacBook Air M1
Don’t think that there is anything you should worry about.
Name: Macbook Air M1 8gb
Use: 3 months
charge cycles: 53

The maximum capacity degraded from 99% and hit 98% in just a matter of days. is it normal ?
Thanks for sharing. I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s within normal parameters.
Name: Macbook Air M1 8gb

Yes, it’s normal. Keep us posted.
MacBook Pro M1 8gb 256gb
Almost 5 Months in use
Cycle Count: 18
Condition: Normal
Maximum Capacity: 99%
Is this normal?
Yes it is. You’re mostly using it plugged-in correct? hence the low amount of charging cycles in 5 months of usage.
Yes! Does this mean it’s ok to use it plugged-in all the time?
I would recommend you to alternate. Allow the battery to work from time to time. allow it to drain to 30% at least once every few days.
Will do! Thanks so much!
Macbook Pro M1
4months used
battery cycle 99
battery health 94
is this normal?
99 cycles in 120 days… looks like you’re using it heavily.
6% battery health decrease is quite significant. Keep an eye on it and check if it continues to drop at the same rate.
it now has
110 cycle
91 % battery health
That’s a significant decrease indeed. According to other readers, Apple will agree to replace the battery or your entire unit, if the battery drops to 80% Maximum Capacity, in less than 1 year.
P.S.: Still hopping that this is just a bug and the Maximum Capacity will be adjusted higher with an upcoming software update. Are you noticing any actual decrease in battery life? I mean if you wouldn’t know the Maximum Capacity reading, would you notice that the battery got weaker?
Macbook Air M1
Bought 1st week of May 2021
Cycle Count: 42
Condition: Normal
Maximum Capacity: 97%
Is this normal?
I would recommend you to keep an eye on it. Especially after macOS software updates. As the Maximum Capacity value tends to get corrections after updates.
I have an m1 MacBook Air 16gb ram 512 gb storage
I received it on 29th jan so I’ve used it for about 6 months.
I have currently gone through 125 cycles and my battery health is already down to 84 percent (poor condition) according to coconut battery and iStat menus , but only 95 percent according to apples system information.
my battery charging habits are quite healthy, I use the battery from 80% to 30% i.e. start charging it when its down to 30 and stop charging when its upto 80. I occasionally let it charge to 100 like once or twice a week
can you suggest what I should do. I’m form India.
actually it says 92% according to apples system information.
Do you notice any significant changes in terms of battery life? Does the battery deplete faster? M1 Macs are still quite new. We’re not sure if this is just a software glitch and macOS isn’t capable of correctly tracking the Maximum battery capacity of M1 Macs or that we’re actually dealing with an actual decline in battery quality.
M1 Macbook Air 16gb RAM 512 Storage
I have received it on March 20th and now its 5th of august Battery Capacity at 98%
Battery Fault? becoz it drains in 2 days! Or a MacOS stuff?
Coconut Battery shows 89.5%!
Cycle Count is only 39!
Battery looks normal. Is 2 days a short lifetime for you? Usage hours would be more relevant as well as the tasks that your computer performs. Yes, macOS optimization can play a big role too. What macOS Big Sur version is it running on?
It is running on 11.5.1 my screen on time is around 4 hours!
4 hours for a full battery cycle is quite low. Do you use resource intensive apps, or apps that are always active in the background like a trading platform? You can use the cmd+alt+esc combo to check all apps that run in the background and force quit the ones that you don’t plan to use anymore.
Hey My battery health dropped from 98 to 97 from yesterday I think I might have problem and Screen on Time right now after the update has improved to around 6 hours ig
Thanks for getting back to us. You will need to keep an eye on this. If you contact Apple support they will most likely inform you that the current values are within normal parameters. Keep us updated too.
And no I don’t use any Resource intensive apps!
MacBook Air M1 512GB/8GB RAM
6+ months used
Battery cycle 78
Battery health 95%
I use my macbook quite heavily and have been charging it once it reaches around 10% and then unplug at 100%. I was wondering if the battery health is normal or is draining faster?
It looks normal in case of heavy usage. How many screen time hours are you getting for a full cycle? Do you notice any significant difference in battery depletion when compared to its new state?
Thank you. I can use it for a full day without charging it, sometimes more if I am not using it heavily. There’s not much difference when compared to a new state. The battery does not drain quickly, so that’s why I was surprised to see the battery health dropping to 95%.
Thanks for the follow up. Keep an eye on it. The Maximum Capacity might go up or stagnate after the next software releases as Apple calibrates these values quite often.
Its just been 15 days for my Macbook M1 air and my battery health is already showing 99%. Is this a bug or a genuine Battery health issue with M1 MBA
It’s still too early to tell. We have many reports of users seeing strange Maximum Capacity value, but no obvious confirmation that the battery is under performing. I’m inclined to consider it a bug. However, it would be ideal if we get constant follow ups from affected users, to have a better picture.
My Macbook pro m1 after 4 months of use suddenly dropped from 100% to 98% after that in about 4 days it fell 1% until 94%. Now after more 2 months and a half it has 91% officially (30 cycles) and in coconut 87.4%
Thanks for your feedback. 30 cycles in 6 months is unusual. Are you using the device rarely, or daily but mostly plugged-in? You should allow the battery to drain a couple of times per week.
I’m using it daily and most of time plugged-in but sometimes in let it drain to about 40%. I talked to Apple support several times, and sometimes they recommended to use it plugged-in most of time and sometimes to not let it most of time not plugged-in.
I understand. A battery is designed to be charged and discharged. This is why I recommend you to avoid using it too much plugged-in.
What did Apple support say about 91% Maximum Capacity after 6 months of usage? Did they claim it’s within normal parameters?
They said that up to 80% in a year is normal. They want I take the mac in apple store again to do some tests, as I have problems with bluetooth mouse too. When it was 98% I already sent it to check and they said all was ok. The online support said that probably they will replace battery only if fall more than 80% before one year. I’m very disappointed with this mac as I have another 2017 Mac Air with more than 100% of battery health in more than 3 years of use in the same conditions. I thinks this M1 thing is a prototype.
Thanks for the follow up. Yes, the M1 Mac is definitely a 1st gen product, and thus more prone to design flaws. However, it’s kinda too early to judge it at this moment. Let’s wait it out and see how it evolves. Keep us posted please.
Bought mine last Jan. this year. Cc is 26 and battery health is 98%. Is this normal? Is there any way for the battery health go back to 100% if possible?
Yes, that’s normal. No batteries are like humans, they age and aging can’t be reverted, unfortunately!
For me, it’s 94% after 6 months since I bought it. Is it normal?
It’s not encouraging, but it’s still within parameters. Are you using it heavily?
Macbook Air M1 256GB 16GB
Cycle Count – 78
Maximum Battery Health – 94%
Coconut Battery – 88%
Time: 7 Months of used most of the time I have it plugged in.
I just noticed this behavior since updating to BigSur 12.15 and the battery is degrading ever since and I’m not surprised that this is experienced by other people as well in the community.
Was wondering if this can be replaced by a new one
Mostly I leave it plugged in as this is recommended by everybody in the Apple community but I do occasionally drain it up to 20-30% every week just to make sure battery is being drained from time to time. I always leave it sleep and not shutting it down
*Since updating to BigSur 11.5
Typo error there with the version that I am suspecting something happened down there
Thanks for your feedback Christian. Can you also notice a difference in the battery life while using the computer, or its just the Maximum Capacity value that’s making you think that the battery is deprecating? If you noticed this happening after macOS Big Sur 11.5 it could be a glitch with the algorithm that’s calculating the Maximum Capacity value. Are you now on 11.5.2, the most recent release? The value can recover in a subsequent update.
Keep an eye on it. Apple won’t replace the battery unless it reaches 80% Maximum Capacity within 1 year. Keep us update about how this evolves please.

Max. Battery Health: 100% max.
I used it about 8 hours daily and most of the time it’s plugged into a dell monitor charging the mba.
I’d like to know if this behavior is normal?
M1 macs seem to have batteries that decrease Maximum Capacity faster than usual. However, if you report this to Apple, they will most likely tell you that everything above 80% after 1 year of usage is normal and doesn’t qualify for a battery replacement. My recommendation is to keep an eye on it!
Name: Macbook Air M1 8gb
Use: 4,5 months
charge cycles: 52
Battery health: 98%
is it normal?
Yes, it looks normal Christina.
MacBook Pro M1 8GB
Use: 9 months
Battery Health Information:
Cycle Count: 72
Condition: Normal
Maximum Capacity: 92%
Battery health seems to drop faster than I would expect.
Yes, it seems a bit accelerated. Keep an eye on it. It might stagnate. However, 72 cycles in 9 months, if you use it daily, it hints that you’re mostly using it plugged-in. Is that correct?
Only in the last 3-4 months, before that only occasionally plugged in. Even now, I never leave it plugged in – even though I mostly use it plugged into an external monitor these days, it always gets unplugged when I’m done using it. The battery seemed to age quite quickly right from the beginning.
Thanks for the follow up. Yes, there have been plenty similar reports. It might be a design flaw, or the way the M1 is calibrated to optimize resources, could cause a bigger impact on the battery health. There’s not much you can do about it. Apple provides a free replacement only if it drops below 80% within 1 year. Would appreciate if you can update us along the way.
2 months
48 cycles
battery health 97 percent
Big Sur 11.6
Not quite sure if this is normal
It’s within normal parameters, but I would continue to keep an eye on it. Keep us updated about how this unfolds.
Hi. My MacBook Pro M1 2020 is showing 91% battery health after 88 cycles.
MacOS: Big Sur
Been used for 7 months.
Thanks for reporting. Once it drops below 90% you should contact Apple support and see if you qualify for a free battery replacement. Keep us updated.
Hi. My MacBook Air M1 2020 is showing 96% battery health after 29 cycles.
MacOS: Big Sur
Been used for 3 months.
Is it normal?
Let’s say it’s normal for the M1 based on the number of such reports. Keep an eye on it. If it drops below 90& within 1 year, you should contact Apple and ask questions.
Name: Macbook Air M1 8gb
Use: 4,5 months
charge cycles: 58
Battery health: 97%
Normal?
Yes, it’s within parameters. Keep an eye on it. Do get back if it deprecates below 90% within 1 year.
Mine is Macbook Pro M1 16Gb, MacOS BigSur 11.6
Use: 8-9 months
Charge cycle: 168
Battery health: 97%
Use with an external monitor and USB hub. Shut down everytime after using it.
Is this normal?
I was told that the MBP is not designed to always shut down. So, since 3 days ago I don’t shut down and just put it into sleep. Charge only when battery reach between 30 to 50% (although there were few times I used it until 20%). I found out that if I leave the USB hub plugged in to the computer during sleep, and leave it overnight, it will drain the battery maybe around 2-3%.
Also, I use it on average 9-10 hours per day mostly watching Youtube, emailing, browsing the net and productivity stuff (such as Word, Powerpoint, InDesign).
That makes your stats even better! Congrats.
That’s a relieve. Thank you!
Yes, that’s normal. Those are very good stats compared to other reports over here. Shutting down is OK every now and then, because it clears lingering processes. I noticed that if I don’t shut down once a week, the notebook starts losing more chare % over night, without using a USB hub.
Good to know. Cheers!
Name: Macbook Air M1 8gb
Use: 5 months
charge cycles: 61
Battery health: 96%
is it normal?
Numbers are not ideal, but Apple will consider them within parameters. Apparently, M1 macs battery tend to degrade faster than usual. Keep an eye on it. If it drops below 80% within 2 years, you can ask for a replacement.
Macbook Air M1
Use 2 Months
Charge cycle 17
Battery health 100%
in Coconut 92,9% health ???
Are these differences normal
That’s a big difference, but I would go with the Battery Health reading, at least that’s what Apple support will take into consideration. Keep an eye on the Battery Health though, if Coconut is accurate, you might experience a sudden drop during the next software update. I hope it won’t be the case though. Keep us updated!
I have updated to Monterey
and same thing. I have checked in Terminal the raw data from the battery. Same result with coconut.
Thanks for the follow up. Not sure what to say. Have you tried to ask Apple support about it?
No. I say the console output rawdata is the same with coconut. The battery health in settings are not corect. The ioreg output in the console is a apple tool.
ioreg -l -w0 | grep Capacity
So, you mean that your battery wen’t down to 92% in 2 months?
