How To Fix USB Ports Not Working In macOS Monterey?
Last updated on January 4th, 2022 at 08:45 pm
Posted in Bug Fixes by Tyrone on October 29, 2021Are USB ports not working on MacBook ever since you updated to macOS Monterey? USB hubs fail to recognize your external devices such as SSDs? This is a serious macOS 12 bug! It’s a widespread issue, especially amongst M1 Mac owners, but not only.
USB Ports Not Working On Mac
This important issue has been reported by several users on our macOS Monterey 12.0.1 review page:
Apri complains:
“2 days ago, I updated my MBA M1 to MacOS 12.0.1. After that, my usb hubs don’t work. It delivers power, but not data.”
Danielle confirms:
“Just updated to Monterey 12.0.1 and its not recognizing my external hard drives.”
I’ve researched this issue and found numerous similar reports on:
- Apple’s Developer Forums – These reports show that the issue surfaced ever since the beta testing stages, but Apple seems to have failed to patch it for the public release.
- Apple’s Discussion Forums – a recent thread started yesterday.
- Reddit – user complaining that he is not able to use his mouse and keyboard anymore because USB hub fails in macOS Monterey!

How To Fix USB Hubs Not Working In macOS Monterey
If you heavily rely on USB hubs and read this article in useful time, don’t update to macOS Monterey just yet! Prevention is the only solution at this moment!
According to iPhoneTricks.org reader Apri, Apple is aware of this issue and plans to fix it in an upcoming software update.
Update: Apple seems to have fixed some of the USB ports issues in macOS 12.1! Thanks Mike for confirming! Proceed with the update. If you still encounter problems use the tips provided below
What’s worrisome though, is that the macOS Monterey USB bug has surfaced since the early betas and Apple has failed to find a solution during several months of beta testing. Hopefully, they will come up with a fix soon!
macOS 12 USB Bug Workaround
After reading tens of reports I can conclude that a bug causes macOS Monterey to stop supporting a large number of USB hubs. Some will work though, but not with all ports on the hub, while for others not ports work at all!
For example, USB-C & HDMI ports might work, but in general most USB 3.0 ports don’t work! These ports do power devices. They will for example charge an iPhone, but the device won’t be able to transfer any data to your Mac. The same goes for external SSD drives and more.
Does Your USB Hub Work?
So, the only way way that you can get around the macOS Monterey USB issues is by trial and error.
Bryan confirms that only one of his USB hubs are working after macOS 12.0.1 update and that’s the Vava dock. You can grab one from Amazon.com:

Below you can find out some docks that won’t function as expected in macOS Monterey 12.0.1:
If you own an USB hub that works in macOS 12 please share it in the comments section and we will update it here. Users in urgent need might be willing to purchase them until Apple fixes the USB hub-gate via software update!
Potential Fix For USB Hubs Not Working
(Updated, November 11)
Oliver suggests that the actual hub might not be the issue, but the cables that are being used to connect.
“After a few days of testing I have managed to get my devices and hubs working by connecting to them with USB-FI certified USB-C 3.1 (or USB 3.0 Type-A) gen1 cables. It seems that anything else would only let them connect at USB 2.0 speeds (and some of my devices don’t work with USB 2.0, so don’t even connect).”
If you have the available cables, test it out and let us know.
(Update, January 4): Joseph B. confirms this fix. He managed to fix USB connection not working in macOS Monterey, between Mac and Dell UltraSharp 27″ Monitor by swapping the original Gen 2 cables with the UGREEN USB C to USB C Cable USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type C PD Fast Charging 5Gbps from Amazon.com!
Tip: You can quickly purchase similar USB-C cables on Amazon: USB-C 3.1 (gen 1) cables or USB 3.0 Type-A gen 1.
Another Fix For USB Hubs Not Working?
(Updated, December 1)
Chris informs that he managed to solve this macOS Monterey issue with the help of an UGREEN adapter USBC Male OTG Cable Type C USB 3.0 Female. You can grab one too from Amazon. Please inform us if it helps!

No problems on 12.0.0 and suddenly had this USB A issue with 12.0.1 on the 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Max.
I switched to another generic (ish) USB C hub and suddenly all my USB A devices started working. If you have a different USB C hub I’d try it. Solved my issue instantly.
I can’t find a name brand on the hub that would not work. The working hub was a VAVA.
Thanks for the feedback Bryan. We will update the working hub in the main content of the article. Can you please let us know if it’s one of the following models:
– Vava 8-in-1 Type C USB hub (Amazon.com link)
– Vava 12-in-1 Type C USB Hub (Amazon.com link)
Using the Vava 8-in-1 Type C USB Hub and it is fully working on MacOS 12.0.1
Thanks for the confirmation Bryan. Appreciate your contribution.
My Sandisk/USB C is not working with my MacBook Pro 2018 15″ right after the update!? This is my Time Machine EXT SSD drive as well
Uh, that’s nasty. Have you tried to change the cable?
my 8-in -1 that looks just like the VAVA will work for a few minutes and then drop
My tplink usb lan adapter was perfectly working this morning on my windows comouter, I plug it on my Imac running in Monterey in 5 mins it stops working and now it cannot be read as well by my wondows pc just after I plug it to my Imac anyone who can help fix it?
Are you able to access its settings? Tried restarting? What about a reset?
Both of my belkin powered hubs that worked fine on Mojave stopped working with Monterey. Unpowered hoyoki works fine
USB’s on my hama 00135764 does not work with my macbook air m1
Thanks for the feedback Adrian. We will update your info in the main content of the article.
Green cell AK50 hub is not working
Thanks for reporting Narcin. We appreciate it.
OWC USB-C Dock only delivers power now, no more data or even audio (it has a 3.5mm port which used to be recognized but even that isn’t appearing as an option anymore)
Thanks for the help Angelo. I will add the model to the list.
Are you able to output video over the cdmi port? My OWC dock now only shows a blue screen, the monitor is detected and I can drag windows there, but nothing is shown.
The model I have only has displayport, and I’ve never got it to work, even when on Big Sur. I’ve been hooking it up to my monitor via usb-c to hdmi
Hello, USB ports are not working with AUKEY hub model CB-C72 and MacBook Air 2020.
Thanks for the contribution Joseph.
My Anker 8port USB A hub is working on new Macbook Pro running Monterey.
Thanks for the confirmation Sandy. We appreciate your contribution.
I bought this one and it isn’t working for my MacBook Air running Monterey 12.0.1.
That’s crazy. Thanks for reporting Jessica. macOS 12.1 will be most likely released tomorrow. Please update when available and let us know if it does fix this USB hub problem for you?
I don’t think the issue is with the hubs, I think it is with the cables that are being used.
After a few days of testing I have managed to get my devices and hubs working by connecting to them with USB-FI certified USB-C 3.1 (or USB 3.0 Type-A) gen1 cables. It seems that anything else would only let them connect at USB 2.0 speeds (and some of my devices don’t work with USB 2.0, so don’t even connect).
This includes my USB-C monitor, Dell D6000 Dock, Multiple storage, 4k usb-c camera and other devices (including iPad Pro) had the same issue.
My Dell U3219Q monitor came with a USB 3.1 gen2 cable and would only connect at USB 2.0 speeds, and so for some devices they wouldn’t connect at all. By swapping out to a Gen1 cable it connects properly.
Thanks for your contribution Oliver. I will update your tips to the main content of the article soon. Anyone else can confirm these findings?
I’ve had one person confirm on the macrumors forum that this solved their issue.
I have a support call with apple in half an hour so will see what they say.
Great keep us posted.
Wow !! That Oliver is some kind of genius. I followed his advice and swapped out the gen 2 USB-C cables that came with each of my Dell UltraSharp 27″ USB-C Hub Monitors (U2721DE) for gen1 USB-C cables and everything now works as it did. So, far I haven’t encountered any noticeable downsides.
The gen 1 cables I used are the UGREEN USB C to USB C Cable USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type C PD Fast Charging 5Gbps from Amazon.com for $11.99 per cable, which arrived in 2 days. I generally like UGREEN because it seems to me that they make high-quality stuff.
Thanks to Oliver, the author and everyone else who contributed to getting me back up and running.
Thanks for the feedback Joseph. Glad that you managed to work this out. Happy to help!
P.S.: Thanks again Oliver!
AUKEY model CB-C78 is not working in MacOS 12.0.1
Thanks for the contribution Andres.
My VAVA USB-C is *not* working so I’m wondering if there’s a driver update I need to do… I thought it was my monitor that’s barely a year old. I’m so annoyed with Apple.
Correction: It’s a Kensington dock… 135W USB-C & USB-A Hybrid Dock (K36800NA).
Thanks for reporting. Will add it to the list.
Does Vava 7-1 works with the MacBook Air M1 ?? Or just the 8-1 usb c hub.
*Update I had an HTC rj45 8 -1 hub that stopped working and looking for a VAVA but the one available it’s the 7-1 one.
Mokin USB C Hub Multiport USB C Adapter is working but my mac will not recognize my 4 external hard drives through the Firewire 800 port on my OWC hub.
Thanks for sharing this Kim.
For me, it’s inconsistent. I’m setting up a huge array of stuff connected to my 16″ M1 Max. I have two Anker 13 port USB 3.0 A-type hubs and one Plugable 10 port 2.0 hub. Everything is going through a Razer Thunderbolt 4 Chroma Dock, which has three downstream TB4 ports and 3 USB 3.2 A type ports. Different things have not worked at different times, but through changing configurations around again and again I’ve gotten to a point where some but not all of the Anker usb 3.0 ports are working in both hubs for anything other than SSDs in usb3 enclosures. And the USB2 hub works for the moment. But along the way USB keyboards and mice either wouldn’t work at all anywhere, then only through the USB 2.0 hub, then finally through some of the Anker 3.0 ports. Oddly, MIDI devices have worked the whole time in any port that worked, unlike keyboards/mice and SSDs. And I have one SSD enclosure for an m.2 drive that wont work anywhere at all, not even plugged directly into the macbook with USB-C. But it works flawlessly on a Catalina hackintosh and a mojave intel macbook. Doubt if this is helpful, other than to say that the problem(s) is(are) a moving target and it is possible through lengthy trial and error to get certain things to work, if you have a bunch of different ways to try things. But the seemingly random nature of the situation does not inspire confidence, to say the least.
Possibly interesting detail: after having gotten most things working that I need working, I shut down, turned everything off and on again, restarted and reconnected to the dock. Everything that was working before I shut is still working. And in the case of my two wired USB keyboards, they now each only work in one specific port in the Anker hubs, one in each hub. It’s as though I’ve got one somewhat stable USB device tree, but if I deviate from it, certain things stop working again. I just have to leave things like this until this gets fixed. But this is super-lame.
Thanks for the extra details. That sounds like macOS Monterey USB equilibrium, that you managed to achieve. Don’t blink.
Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback David. Yes, to put it simple it’s a mess and Apple should clear it with the release of macOS 12.1, that’s currently beta tested.
P.S.: You do seem to have an impressive setup over there. Do you mind if I ask what you’re using it for? No worries, if you can’t get into details. :)
It’s music and audio stuff. If you use a lot of MIDI controllers you end up needing a ton of USB-A ports. Anti-piracy software dongles are usually USB-A. External drives for large uncompressed sound libraries. Plus thunderbolt for high end audio interfaces and displays. I could plug in 40 things, but right now I can only have about 17 things working in my one semi-functional device tree.
SMC reset on the mac book pro (shift+control+Option+power button for 10 seconds) did the trick for me. USB C hubs worked again afterwards.
SMC reset is different for different macs
This worked for me. Thanks heaps
Thanks for confirming Ashley.
hey there, my thunderbolt is working perfectly with power and with my wireless usb mouse i use with,…
In the other hand, my external hard disk it opens and i get into it and it only shows folders, i opent htme and it starts loading and then it pops up the notification of “not ejected properly” it just disconnects itself…
I dont know if somebody is having the same issue with the external hard disk…
Thank you so much.
I assume the external disk was working properly in Big Sur, correct? Have you tried to change cable and see if it makes any difference?
Not just hubs. I simplified the problem to 1. External disk (Toshiba) connected via standard USB cable to a usb c converter; 2. an apple USB mouse via the usb c converter. Result, 1. disk led flashes but is not connected even waiting 20 minutes; 2. no action, system does not recognise the USB mouse. Conclusion, like others power is applied but no recognition of device/s.
Thanks for the feedback David. So, the USB-C converter isn’t working as expected either. Is it possible to plug the USB mouse directly in Mac? Does it work like that?
Hi Patricia.
USB mouse is “USB A” connected to my MacPro (2019) via a USB C converter – no other MacPro ports exist, other than 4 X USB Cs. I have an older MacAir with Big Sur O/S and a variety of interfacing options including USB A which I used to test/verify hardware and cables of the USB Mouse (apple) and Toshiba HDD – excludes the USB C converter because there are no USB C ports. No problems. HDD was mounted/displayed (fully accessible via the many options/apps) and the USB mouse was “workable” instantly .
Same combination of Toshiba HDD/USB A cable, but connected via the USB C converter to my MacPro, resulted in the HDD led light to flash for several seconds, after physical connection. As if Mac o/s 12.0.1 was interrogating the device – maybe trying to mount? With the mouse there was nothing. Also tried some USB drives (thumb drives) – nothing not even a led flash. There were no error or other system messages discerned during or after the event. I verified all items as working on my MacAir after testing on the MacPro. All OK, no data corruption.
Apologies being long winded (hopefully not mansplaining?) but my life is a comms researcher and I am obliged to be exacting in my methodology/reporting. I have no means to verify the USB C converter, but the HDD led light flashes, implying continuity in electrical connectivity partial or full? Hence, it is most likely there is an o/s 12.0.1 problem (intermittent defect given some users are reporting mixed results?). Hope MAC finds a solution soonest, else my expensive 2019 MacPro becomes a basic network client.
Hope this assists
Regards, David
Hello i jad the same issue with iPad Pro after upgrading to iOS 15.1 – greencell ak50 dont work. Other iPad pro with 14.8 work properly. Somethong gone wrong globally :(
Thanks for the feedback. That’ something new. Did not know that iPads are affected to. Anyone else can confirm this issue on an iPad?
Dear all,
Thought you might like to know. Purchased (Amazon) a Fasgear Type C to micro c cable (the “a” side has a kink – not continuous like other “a” usb sides) which claims “full” usb functionality. Using the cable, directly connected a Toshiba hdd. O/S 12.0.1 identified and instantly “mounted” the hdd – all files are accessible, no data corruption. Also purchased a Lenthion USB C multiport hub. It also claims “full” usb functionality and “proven” compatibility with MacPro 2019, 16″. Connected and attached a variety of thumb drives even an ancient apple USB mouse plus a hdmi display. All identified. All work perfectly.
Hence my problem was hardware to system compatibility related. O/S 12.0.1 seems to prefer connectivity devices/cables conforming to “fuller” usb functionality than before, consistent with the standard, rejecting legacy cables/devices (worked for lower system revs) which may have less than full functionality than required for this system rev? How full the functionality, don’t know.
Having being a system developer in the past, I often worked with colleagues that were “zealots” about tightening up conformance to standards in new system releases/revs without regard to backwards compatibility and the possibility of inherent problems when migrating to the older to the newer release/rev. My problems were UNIX based and once moving from one major system release to another engendered over 200 defects (don’t mention defects engendered with different releases of development environments/languages – tightening up conformance to standards).
Apologies for the rant. All good now (for me). Spare us the Apple development “zealots”. Does anybody remember the IEEE488 (GPIB/HPIB) interfacing fiascos?
Regards
David
Thanks for the detailed insight David. No need for apologies. We appreciate your point of view. Thanks for the tips and for pointing out the reason for these macOS 12.0.1 USB issues.
Andobil 3.0 hub: HDMI works, USBC works, USBA doesn’t work. When daisy-chain an Insignia 3.0 Travel hub, power is there, but camera and keyboard plugged into it don’t work. MBP M1
I have a 16 inch 2019 Macbook Pro and because of a lack of external ports besides Thunderbolt, have been using a Hub for peripherals such as a back up HDD and a USB2.0 Apple Air DVD player in the past. After an Upgrade to Monterey 12.01, everything worked just fine, except for the DVD player. The player connects to the Hub, is recognized but an error message asking to connect to a USB port on the Mac. Not possible, because there are no USB ports. Thinking the issue might be with the DVD player, It was successfully checked out on two other Macs with USB ports. Thinking the issue might be with the Hub, I ordered a new one with a dedicated USB 2.0 Port. Same issues. The Systems Report indicates the DVD player is recognized, but that’s it. The DVD will no longer load, let alone transfer data to the MacBook Pro. A little bit of digging indicated this is a KNOWN issue by Apple. I hope they address it quickly, because without being able to load data, via a CD or DVD, I have an expensive brick. In the meantime BEWARE of upgrades to Monterey if you use any device that doesn’t have a Thunderbolt connector and you wish to connect via a Hub
Thanks for the extended feedback Chris. Appreciate the useful info that you shared.
My issue has been resolved with the purchase of a UGREEN adapter USBC Male OTG Cable Type C USB 3.0 Female. Works a charm. Available on Amazon for about $11.50 CDN
Thanks for the feedback and for your contribution Chris. Will add your info to the main content of the article, to make it more visible.
You can add the UGREEN USB 3.0 4-port selector to the list of working hubs. I was running into this problem with an Inland 4-port hub and needed the selector switch of the UGREEN, so I bought it on a whim and it magically didn’t have the problem! I’m plugging in only USB 2 devices; not sure if that makes a difference.
Note that my mouse, keyboard, and headset worked just fine with the other hub but I would get audio dropouts from my Steinberg UR22 audio interface every minute or so. Also my boot times went through the roof (I was seeing 45 minutes!). The UGREEN fixes that very well.
I just puchased this hub and it does not work with MBP 14″ on 12.2.1. It works just fine with a PC though. I will try to get a different cable, but I don’t expect anything at this point.
Satechi TYPE-C HDMI ADAPTER 4K 60HZ does not work
The problem gets stranger. I just opened up my m1 max 16 mbp today, set it up to find my external drives not connecting. then when I plug the same hubs that my external drives are connected to, into a usb c hub I use for my ipad pro… it worked. BUT…. ONLY on the left side usb c connection. not the right side!
Strange indeed. I hope that this will be sorted out in macOS 12.1 and we’re not dealing with a new Apple standard that’s more idealistic when it comes to USB connectivity.
I seem to be having the same issue while running Monterey 12.0.1 on my M1 iMac. I’m using a Philips USB-C to A male to female adapter. I’m getting power delivery to my iPhone yet no data transfer when connecting my DSLR camera or my headphone amplifier. After contacting Apple support the agent on the other line couldn’t find anything internally relating to this issue – strange since this problem seems to be widespread. The issue persisted even after reinstalling Monterey. Hoping that 12.1.0 fixes the issue…..
Additionally when I check it the USB device tree in system report, my iPhone is detected when connected through the dongle but not my other devices
Are you using the same type of cable with all devices?
Yes I’m using the same cable. I even bought the same cable again to see if that was the issue.
The issue seems to persist even after I updated to the 12.1.0 beta
Thanks for the feedback. That’s not encouraging.
Thanks for the feedback Ben. Let’s hope that you talked with an inexperienced first level support staff and that Apple is actually aware of this issue and planning to fix it.
Greetings from Germany.
Based on some recommendations I bought two USB adapters.
1. Amazon Basics – 3ft USB Type C to USB Type A USB 3.1 Standard 1st Gen Double Braided Nylon Cable – Silver
2. Amazon Basics – USB Type C Male to USB Female USB 3.1 1st Gen Black Adapter Cable
Both support Usb 3.1 Gen1 , but they are not recognised by the os . The only solution which works at the moment is to use the internal usb hub in my lg 27 850 .
Thanks for the feedback Sebastian and for letting us know that the Gen 1 cables did not work for you. Glad that the internal USB hub available in your LG monitor works. At least you have a workaround until Apple fixes this or we find out more info!
I have to update my statement.Amazon Basics – 3ft USB Type C to USB Type A USB 3.1 Standard 1st Gen Double Braided Nylon Cable is still not working and I think this is due to that it does not have five pins on the USB A side. I had to learn that there are a lot of fake usb3 devices out there , which only have 4 Pins what makes them usb 2.X devices .
My first test with the
Amazon Basics – USB Type C Male to USB Female USB 3.1 1st Gen Black Adapter Cable
was with a faulty usb stick . I could get it working with other usb devices… . This adapter does provide five pins .
I have not imagined that amazon selling fake usb 3 products … , I will send it back.
Nevertheless my old usb 2 hub is still not working even with the new adapter. There is still something wrong with the software. Let’s hope macos12.1 is rollout soon.
Thanks for the followup Sebastian. Yes, macOS 12.1 should be released tomorrow!
Hi, Ugreen Ultra Slim 5-in-1 USB C Hub doesnt work
Thanks for the feedback Alex.
Hi dear iPhonetricks team,
great thread here, just helped me solving my problem which did not appear on Monterey but on Big Sur 11.6.1 / MBA M1!
The faulty dock here is a litte and cheap model by LEVIN (2 x USB 3, HDMI, SD, mini SD, USB C).
It would give power to my Kensington USB-Hub but would not recognize my USB hard drives.
Luckily I also own an Anker which uses up both USB C ports on the M1 Air and delivers Data via 2x USB 3, 2x USB C, HDMI and SD/mini SD.
So my backup session now is safe ;-)
Kind regards,
Michael
Thanks for the feedback Michael and for sharing your workaround. We appreciate your contribution.
Hello all. I have the same issue and it cracked my brain after I tried many ways to understand the problem. Then I found these comments above which I realized that it is not my hub nor ports yet update.
I have YK Design FX300 and it doesn’t work. I have bought one today. Waiting for it to arrive. I hope this problem will be solved in future.
Good luck to everyone!
Thanks for the feedback. Please provide a followup and let us know if the one that you bought today works.
macOS 12.1 should be also released soon. Hopefully, it will fix this issue.
Hi. I just upgraded to Monterey 12.1 and my hub (GreenCell AK50) started working.
Bingo. Thanks for confirming. Finally, the fix is here!
Mine not…. Still the same. Only on port at a time.
Thanks for the followup Jordi. That’s strange. We’re definitely getting less reports about this issue than before the macOS 12.1 release. Can anyone else please confirm if they still encounter the USB ports issue after updating?
MBP M1 2020. My Logitech keyboard was able to be recognized. However the keyboard still doesn’t work. My Logitech web cam is not recognized. So I’m still waiting.
Thanks for the feedback Layne. You’re on macOS 12.1 correct?
Still seeing the issue with Monterey 12.1. MBP M1 2020. USB Hub (docking station) is Dell D6000. So frutrating.
Thanks for the feedback Mark.
Mine still shows, USB accessory disables using too much power
After letting it stay plugged for sometime it starts to recognise
Are you connecting directly to Mac or through an USB hub?
through USB HUB of Cable Creation 7 in 1, Whenever I connect it gives the notification USB accessories disabled using too much power.
I leave it there for sometime then it shows the drive connected via the hub
Thanks for the followup. Not sure what else to suggest. Have you reported this to Apple?
The issue I faced after upgrading to MAC OS Monterey 12.0.1 and then to 12.1 is that whenever I boot up my MAC every morning, it doesn’t recognizes my USB-C ports that are on the left side. The ones on the right side work fine. As I connect my external display with left side so it doesn’t work. Then the workaround as found in an article on Google that I perform every day is,
Disconnect the external display cable from the USB-C port, shut down the MAC, close the lid, wait few seconds, plug the cable back into USB-C port and then wait another 5 seconds and power ON the MAC.
This time when MAC boots up, it recognizes the external display and works rest of the day.
Just hooking up a 13″ macbookpro that required Monteray to run an eGPU. I am using 12.2 so I thought this mess would have been sorted at this point.
Usinz a Razer TB4 dock I frequently lose my USB devices (mouse, keyboard, webcam, & mic) – though the displays and eGPU remain working without issue. So far rebooting appears to e my only solution.
I am using the Anker 577 Thunderbolt Docking Station (13-in-1) and when I upgraded to Monterey 12.2 I started experiencing issues. I have connected 3 hard drives, a wireless mouse and wired keyboard.
If I start my MacBook Pro from shut down all of the peripherals connect and work. If I eject the hard drives and disconnect the dock, when I re-connect the dock, none of the peripherals connect/remount/work. It isn’t until I restart that I get them all to work again.
If I connect the dock to my Dell laptop, everything works each and every time.
I also connect a 27″ HP monitor through HDMI. This is the only thing that will reconnect.
Renesas USB3.0 2PORT INTERNAL ON MOTHERBOARD NOT WORKING AFTER BIGSUR AND MONTEREY WORKS UPTO CATALINA 10.15.7
I unwittingly updated from Big Sur to Monteray on my 2020 Macbook Pro M1 and my hub (YXwin 6-in-2 premium USB C Hub) stopped working. This is the port for my Time Machine external drive plus my Focusrite Scarlett Solo USB Audio Interface – essential for my work as a voice over artist. My only workaround was to downgrade back to Big Sur but unfortunately my laptop still failed to connect with Time Machine, or my old laptop, by which means I hoped to migrate settings etc instead. It seemed I had lost all my backup files and I despaired of retrieving them. 48 hours of headache and trawling the internet later, I finally managed to get my new mac to connect with my external drive and am currently doing a 5hr back up from my Time Machine files. I am just hoping it all goes smoothly. I will be more careful updating OS in future – and read around for any problems first.
how did u get your external to work? I am going thru this issue currently
Hi- This all started for me with the 12.1.2 monterey update. I have my macbook pro (intel), hooked up to a J5create docking station with an external keyboard, mouse and logitech camera. My external screens are both Dells. This update has made my life a living hell! I just purchased the VAVA docking station in hopes this will help. I am ready to dump mac and go buy a PC.
My Anker 577 Thunderbolt Docking Station connects an Intuos Wacom, Logitec webcam, Shure mic + headphones and LG monitor to my 14″ M1 Macbook Pro. Everything works, until it doesn’t. At random times in the day stuff stops working, save for the Monitor. When all the other USB peripherals fail, the monitor is not affected. A resart resolves the issue… but it doesn’t help me when I have to quit a Zoom call in the middle of a meeting! I’d love Apple or Anker to patch this!
after the monterey 12.3.1 update my external webcam, my wired headphones, and everything else that was connected to the other world computing thunderbolt hub stopped working. I could only get the power from the hub to connect my macbook in clamshell to the viewsonic 38″ monitor using the thunderbolt 4 cable i have been using. but nothing else was working.
I unplugged everything, reconnected the power plug to the hub, then the thunderbolt 3 cable from the monitor to the thunderbolt port on the hub, then used the thunderbolt 4 cable on the front of the hub to an open thunderbolt port on the mac next to the headphone jack in clamshell mode (2019 intel 16″ macbook pro), then i plugged back in the external Mee Webcam, the G 8gig external hard drive, the Gravastar Mars speaker, and thunderbolt to lightning cable to charge my iphone, the mouse and keyboard are from logitech and plugged them into the remaining open ports on the macbook… everything worked,
then opened Ring Central and started video and it showed the Mee Webcam for video and for Mic, both worked, so everything is resolved… that upgrade though disabled all connections the computer system preferences saw the ports on the mac, saw the thunderbolt hub, but showed no devices were connected, now shows exactly what’s connected.
Wavlink usb 3.0 dual bay docking station stopped working when I updated to the latest Monterey .Any update on the solution .
I have no idea how to fix my external ports that I connect my flash drives to. It seems I need a new cable usb adapter. I will attempt a call to my local apple guy for a fix.
Thanks for the feedback. Yes, you might need new cables. Let us know what your local Apple guru said.
weird stuff: My no-brand USB hub was recognised on my 2010 Mac Pro (with a USB 3.1 PCIe card) as USB 3.0 but is USB 2.0 on a new Mac Studio with MacOS Monterey. Just as well: my USB 2.0 Apple keyboard is not “seen” when plugged into one of the Studio’s stock USB ports! Similar issue with an older Belkin 3.0 hub.
That’s strange indeed. Thanks for sharing this. I’m curios if there will be any changes in macOS Ventura.
Is it confirmed that Apple has tried to solve this issue since Monterey 12.0 up to the present 12.4? To me it seems to worsen after every upgrade. My 2 TB SSD extra drive worked OK in 12.3 but after upgrade it almost sopped working. Sluggish and a speed about 11 MB/s. (it is rated for speeds up to 1 GB/s) (Bytes not bit).
I amazes me that they don’t officially come out with some information that it is due to improper cables or at least give all their customers a hint on how to solve it.. It creates much frustration and dampening of creative flow for many people..
That makes perfect sense Jonas. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem anything official stated about this. Let’s hope that macOS Ventura will shed some light into this USB ports saga.
On holiday, accepted a security update to 12.5.1…. I thought my backup USB drive had failed, but it turns out it’s the dreaded USB problem. A pen drive, is fine, a new ProGrade CFExpress B/SD card reader is fine, but the external USB drive (Seagate 4TB) will power up but not appear, and my old GoPro Hero4, on USB mini, will again power/charge, but not connect as a USB device….
The constant poor software & patching guarantees I’ll not bother with a Mac device again once this dies, or I sell it off.
Sorry to hear Justin. Yes, this must be frustrating indeed. I though that this had been fixed by now.
I guess that rebooting the device won’t help, or?
Hi Patricia, no such luck. I’ve tried reboots, resets, different ports etc with no luck.
Oh ok. Let’s hope this will get better in macOS Ventura 13. Do follow up if you have any breakthrough. Thanks
I also accepted the 12.5.1 update on my 16″ 2021 M1 Pro. Immediately after, the left rear usb-c port stopped working. The other two work fine. I can swap devices between ports and all work on the other two ports, none work with the left rear port. System Report shows three ports. Doesn’t work in Safe Boot either. Reinstalled OS from Recovery and nothing. Diagnostics says all good. Apple Support ran through everything they had and no solution, just suggested I take it in for repair. Ironically, I’ve had zero problems with my Caldigit hub through all of OS12.
Thanks for the detailed report David. That must be annoying indeed. If you can live without that port for a while I would wait until the next update to see if anything changes.
Keep us updated please as we’re curious to find out how you manage to solve it.
Having the same issue with a Satechi Type-C Multiport 4K adapter… Powers the USB devices but no data transfer.
Thanks for reporting. Is your device running macOS 12.5.1? Did this happen ever since updating to Monterey? Or it worked initially?
My usb hub on my mac mini m1 stopped reading my usb flash drives. Just updated to Monterey 12.6
Can’t seem to fix it.
I am having same issue: after upgrading to Monterey 12.6 my Anker hub provides power to USB-connected hard drive but the drive does not appear and there is no data transfer.
That’s crazy. I assume you’ve been running an earlier version of Monterey before 12.6, correct? Or you jumped from Big Sur?
I was running earlier version of Monterey. Anyone have thoughts?
My FlePow UCN3281 hub no longer works after updating to Monterey 12.6 this morning.
Thanks for letting us know. Not sure what fix to suggest at this moment. Let us know if you have any breakthrough.
I can report USB issues with Monterey 12.6 on a 2019 MacBook Pro using a Kensington sd5500t. Had nothing but problems with this computer and this dock. It’s been replaced 2-3 times and the problems persist. Used to cause panic crashes on the system but those seem to have subsided after changing the sleep settings.
Thanks for sharing. So at the moment, everything is OK, are you experiencing any issues?
Anyone know if this issue is fixed in Ventura?
We’re still waiting for reports regarding this problem.
Nov. 7 2022..
Same issues. updated to 12.6.1 this morning and still not able to use my xspus hub . Very challenging as my macbook air only has 2 ports available for use and neither transfer data via the hub right now.
Thanks for reporting. Sorry to hear that this is still an issue. You could try updating to macOS Ventura, but it still have its fair share of bugs and I’m not 100% that it will fix your USB issue.
