AirPods 5B58 Firmware Update For AirPods Pro 2, Max & More
Apple has released AirPods 5B58 firmware update for the AirPods Pro 2 with the classic ‘bug fixes and other improvements’ release notes. New features, issues fixed as well as new problems have to be uncovered through updating and testing.
Update, November 10: Apple has rolled out firmware 5B58 for AirPods 2, 3, Pro 1 and Max too as confirmed by this support document!
AirPods 5B58 Update
This is the second firmware update for the 2nd gen AirPods Pro. The first one, build number 5A377, was released almost two months ago, on September 22!
AirPods firmware updates are installed automatically. However, you can force the update if you apply the following tips:
A. Check Current Version
- Connect AirPods to iPhone. Get them out from the case and place them in your ears. You should hear the turn ON chime.
- Open Settings. In iOS 16, they show up at the top of the menu.
- Tap on the [airpods name].
- Scroll to the About section and tap on Version.
Fact: If 5A377 or 5A374 show up, it means that they haven’t updated to the new version!
B. Force 5B58 Update
- 1. With AirPods connected to iPhone, bring them in the case, keep the lid open and connect the case to a power unit.
- 2. Close the lid and be patient until the AirPods are charged to 100%.
- 3. Open the the lid, connect to iPhone and check the firmware version. Are you seeing 5B58 now?
AirPods 5B58 Firmware Not Available?
Before you try to force a firmware update, we highlight once again that this update is only available for the new AirPods Pro models that have been released by Apple this fall! Older AirPods won’t be able to download this version.

This seems to have fixed the bug in the Pro 2 Airpods where sound wandered from one side to the other.
Thanks for the feedback Frank. We will update your info in the main content of the article. Keep us updated if you notice anything else.
i have a pair of airpods max and when i put them on my ears it can happen randomly that only the left side works and the right side is turned off and wont sound or work until the airpods are put back in the smart case and completely unsync with my phone and hopefully the other side will work too.
Thanks for reporting David. This has been reported in the past when AirPods Max or other AirPods models have been connected to Mac. The balance was set all the way to the left, by default as explained here:
https://www.iphonetricks.org/one-airpod-not-working-no-sound-from-mac/
You can check for something similar on the iPhone:
Settings -> Accessibility -> Audio/Visual -> Balance
Also, we’ve found a similar report. You can try this:
Pull the AirPods Max out of the case, untwist them and give them a few seconds like that to allow them to connect, before putting them on your head. Does it work?
Airpods connection failed pops up when trying to connect to iPhone. Not sure if it’s related to this firmware update though. Can u help?
Thanks for reporting. We’ve posted a dedicated article for this issue over here:
