Tap To Click Not Working On Mac In macOS Monterey (Fix?)
Is Tap to click not working on Mac since updating to macOS Monterey? This seems to be a common problem that MacBook users face after installing macOS 12.0.1. Although enabled, the Tap to click with one finger gesture isn’t recognized by the trackpad, resulting in a false click.
Tap To Click Not Working On Mac
This issue has been reported by Sandra on yourmacOS Monterey 12.0.1 review page:
“Trackpad not registering clicks. I often have to repeat the gesture for this to work. Is this a known bug?”
This appears to be a widespread issue. A similar report on Reddit claims that the issue was first spotted in the beta versions of macOS 12:
“Tap to click sometimes not working in Monterey ?”
Fact: Apparently the Tap to click bug is affecting both built-in trackpads of MacBook Air M1 models and others, as well as the Magic Trackpad accessory sold by Apple which can be used with a Mac Mini and other desktop models.
How To Fix Tap To Click Not Working
The good news is that Apple is aware of the bug and seems to have actually fixed the issue in the most recent macOS 12.1 Developer Beta.
Until macOS 12.1 becomes available to the general public, you can apply the following workarounds:
1. Disable & Re-Enable Tap To Click
- Open System Preferences and go for Trackpad.
- Uncheck Tap to click and close System Preferences.
- Open the same menu again and re-enable Tap to click. This should temporarily fix the issue.
2. Restart Mac
You can also try the classic fix of rebooting your computer. Although it might work, this troubleshooting option is also not permanent:
Tap the Apple logo in the top-left corner of the screen and go for Restart…

Thanks for the feedback. We’re getting mixed reports on this. We haven’t been able to replicate it yet.
Nope, not working. And it’s not just tap to click, which at least works intermittently, but triple tap to select a paragraph now does not work at all.
Thanks for sharing this Bruce. Indeed, triple-tap to select does not seem to work either. Anyone else?
Double and triple tap works fine here (MBP 14 M1 Pro Montery 12.1

Thanks for the feedback. Not sure what else to suggest at the moment. Does restarting temporary help?
This is issue is driving me absolutely insane. I’m constantly tapping THREE or FOUR times just to open a window in another tab, or just do basic bloody things in photoshop. What an absolutely stupid and ridiculous bug?!?!?! FIX THIS APPLE!!!!
Thanks for reporting. However, this should have been fixed by now. You sure that there’s no hardware issue with your trackpad?
