How To Fix iOS 14 Bug That Mutes Ringer And Alerts
Last updated on November 17th, 2020 at 04:10 am
Posted in TILs by Tyrone on September 18, 2020A bug experienced by many readers after updating to iOS 14 causes random muting of all Ringer and Alerts on iPhone. This can lead to alarms not ringing, and causes users to wake up late or miss other important calls and notifications.
We couldn’t reproduce this glitch and reports about it are contradictory. Some claim that they’re alarm actually did not work, while others mention that it’s just a visual glitch and as soon as they exit the Sound & Haptic menu and return to the screen, the Ringer And Alerts display the correct volume settings.
How To Check If Ringer And Alerts Are Muted
To make sure that you’re not impacted by this issue check the Sounds & Haptics settings screen before going to bed, or setting an important alarm. Open the Settings app and tap on Sounds & Haptics. Check the Volume bar, available in the ‘Ringer and Alerts’ section. If it’s muted and you don’t have set it like that, you have a problem.
Tip: You can also create a new alarm that should ring in 2 minutes and double-check if the iPhone’s alarm clock actually rings or not!
3 Ways To Fix iOS Ringer And Alerts Bug
1. Double Check
Tap Settings, in the top-left corner of the screen to return to the main Settings page. Next, tap on Sounds & Haptic again to return. Is the ringer and alerts volume still muted?
2. Force Quit Settings
To confirm if the glitch is just a visual bug you can terminate Settings and open it back to see if iOS 14 accidentally mutes Ringer And Alerts or it’s just a display problem.
How To: Swipe-up & hold to enter App Switcher and dismiss the Settings card to force close the app. From the Home Screen, tap on Settings again and check if the Ringer and Alerts volume bar is displaying the correct level.
3. Reboot iPhone
Last but not least, reboot your iPhone and check of this solves the Ringer and Alerts muting problem. You can simply shut your iPhone down and power it back On, or use the iPhone force restart trick.
Tip: Keep the ‘Change with Buttons’ option disabled to make sure that you avoid any accidental muting of ringer volume when pressing Volume buttons.
Updated (October 15)
4. Disable Face ID Attention Aware Feature
One of our readers from Belgium, Stef, has just commented to this article with a potential solution. Please try it too and let us know if this fixes the random muting of Ringer and Alerts on iPhone in iOS 14:
- 1. Open the Settings app.
- 2. Scroll for Face ID & Passcode.
- 3. Type your Passcode to access the settings.
- 4. Disable Attention Aware Features!
Fact: This function allows your iPhone to check for attention before lowering the volume of some alerts. Apparently, this is the setting that triggers the iOS 14 mutes Ringers and Alerts bug. Turn it off and it should solve the issue!

5. Update to iOS 14.3 Beta?
Is this Ringer and Alerts bug still causing you problems in iOS 14.2? We’re getting mixed reports about it. Use the comments section available below to share your feedback.
Personal Feedback: While we haven’t experienced unexpected Ringer volume muting in iOS 14.2, we started noticing that audio playback volume in apps such as YouTube goes haywire, without touching the controls. Again, this appears to be related to Attention Awareness. In my personal case, my daughter was moving around while watching a video and the Volume bar started acting out of control moving up or down. The iPhone was positioned in landscape mode. As as she stopped moving the Volume also stopped changing.
What’s Next?
Apple has started the iOS 14.3 beta testing period. If Ringer, Alerts and Audio playback are still randomly muted on your device you can attempt to upgrade to iOS 14.3 Public Beta and see if it helps. Check out this a detailed how-to guide!
Do let us know if you go for it and manage to fix this annoying bug!
Fix iPhone Ringer And Alarms Video Tutorial
Watch this video guide and see a detailed presentation of all the troubleshooting methods discussed here:
We’ve send a feedback report to Apple about this bug. The problem should be solved in iOS 14.2! We appreciate if you can share your feedback regarding this issue. Comment if you have experienced the iOS 14 mutes Ringer And Alerts bug and if you found any other way to troubleshoot it!
Important: iOS 14.2 is currently plagued with a new issue that causes missing notifications in Messages!
It worked, thank you! Had to do the last resort
Frank, you’re welcome. Thanks for confirming.
It is also happening to my phone (and wife) but is only a visual incorrect issue since when receiving a phone call the volume is the correct volume you had it originally set on even though it shows at mute on the slider. When you exit out of settings and return to sounds it corrects itself visually and also when you reboot. But it reverts back to the incorrect visual mute appearance after a while always. So bottom line just have to ignore it for now.
Hi Rob. Thanks for your comprehensive feedback. Can you let us know if Alarms also work when the ringer bug occurs?
Installed iOS 14 the other day. I have “change with buttons” turned off which has been the setting I’ve used for many years. Somehow the slider bar makes its way back down to mute. I did a reboot of the phone which I hoped would work. It didn’t. I can’t make the problem happen it just seems to randomly slide down to the mute position. I would imagine there must be something I’m doing that causes it to happen. I have no idea what that may be but whatever it is, it’s a glitch on their side. It’s very annoying. I’m missing messages and calls.
Hi Rich. Thanks for commenting. So, for you this isn’t just a visual bug as Rob confirmed in his earlier comment. You’re actually getting the Ringer and Alerts muted?
That is what is happening to me. I have to reboot multiple times a day to resolve the issue.
Paolo thanks for reporting. Is your ringer volume really muted? or is this just a visual glitch and although the Ringer and Alerts bar show that the setting is muted, the iPhone still rings?
Agreed with your experience as i am also facing same mute issue with my IPhone 8 after iso 14 download and installation on my phone.
Quazi, thanks for confirming. We’re waiting for Apple to issue a fix, most likely in an upcoming software update.
I also am having this same problem with my iPhone 11, and it definitely is not just a visual problem. Because of it I miss several phone calls a day. My “change with buttons” option is turned off and I also disabled “attention aware features” on Face ID (another suggestion as a possible fix for the problem). It didn’t fix the problem.
Wini, thanks for trying the ‘Attention Aware Features’ fix. I’m sorry it did not help you. Still searching for a solution.
Had this problem for years! Fixed by changing to different (newer) ringtone!
Rune, far too many users are reporting this problem since the release of iOS 14, so it has to be related with it. We’ve experienced in the past ringtones ringing at a lower intensity than normal, but this is something different.
I Have a very similar problem. But Whenever I am playing a game Solitaire or something, and there is an advert, after the ad is finished my phone goes into mute. Ie ringer and alerts slider is all the way to the left
Keith, thanks for mentioning this behavior. This bug should be fixed by the upcoming iOS 14.2 update.
I updated to iOS 14 and also have the volume mute problem. It randomly happens.
Hi Shelly. Let us know if this is just a visual problem, like the graphic showing it to be muted but the iPhone actually rings, or both graphic shows muted and iPhone is actually muted too. Thanks.
A reboot solved the problem for me after playing around with the settings you mentioned. An initial reboot didn’t solve it. To be clear my problem was that the alarm screen was shown at alarm time (with the snooze and stop button) but I had no sound. An I indeed overslept with my children not getting to school in time…
Koen thanks for sharing your experience. Glad that the reboot fixed it. Let us know please if it re-occurs.
Same problem here. I’ve tried all the recommendations to no avail. I have my phone as I’m an on call engineer at a power plant and I’ve missed a few calls because of this glitch. Will be going back to android
Ianmac, thanks for confirming. That’s very frustrating we know. Apple should fix this soon.
It’s not just visual, and I tried all the things suggested days ago. The setting will be fine and then, after I receive a text, it goes down. Sometimes, it just goes down at random.
Thanks for the clarifications Patricia. Still waiting for an official fix…
Yes, somehow the alert (imessage) get slower by itself. Then back to normal after i adjusting volume slider. When get another notification, it slow down again. And again.
Afiq, thanks for sharing your feedback. So the volume goes down after you gen an iMessage notification? Is it the same behavior as to how music playback is silenced when a text notification is triggered?
Similar situation but mine does not completely mute, mine alarm audio is just super low even tho I have it set to max volume. I have to set up a back up alarm on my Google pixel ????!
Fernando that sounds frustrating. Let’s hope this will be fixed in an upcoming iOS 14.x release.
Thank you this fixed the problem, I’m shocked apple did not catch this.
It’s a MAJOR bug when the phone doesn’t ring! Yikes!
Dane, glad that you could fix it. Thanks for providing feedback for everyone else.
I have this problem many times a day. Primarily it starts acting up when I am on the phone, or FaceTime. I’m not sure if it gets triggered by the use of the camera, microphone, or something else. Call whenever I am on the phone I Do not get any vibration or audible notifications. I have had friends continue to send me messages, or try to FaceTime me when on the phone with me and to no avail. I will keep looking in settings and I will see that slider bar has moved all the way down to mute. Switching the physical mute switch on the side of the phone does not fix this, it does nothing. So far the only fix I have found is restarting my phone, and that is only a temporary fix. i’m about to call Apple, and if they can’t fix Yes I may very well have to leave iPhone. I get medical alerts from my daughter onto my phone and I need to see them as they happen. I really can’t believe Apple push this out to the public without making sure it was clean of bugs.
Michael thanks for sharing your experience. One workaround that you can use is to enable Change with Buttons and try to unmute the device with the help of Volume buttons, to avoid getting back to the Settings app every time. I am sure that this will be fixed in an upcoming iOS 14.x update, but I agree this is a huge bug!
My iPhone 8+ iOS 14 will not ring. Do not disturb is not on and the volume is not muted….I have rebooted my phone and the ringer still doesn’t work. I turned off RoboKiller and the phone still doesn’t work. I have gone through all the settings, and the phone still doesn’t ring.
Lenore thanks for your feedback. This started happening after you updated to iOS 14?
After updating to iOS 14, my ringer and other audible notifications do not work. Settings shows the ringer set at full volume. When I adjust the volume with buttons, the slider goes up and down but a red bell icon has a line through it. The icon indicates mute no matter where I set the slider. I have rebooted with no change. Super frustrating when I miss calls.
Mark thanks for commenting. Did you also update to the latest iOS 14.0.1 release to see if it can fix it? Would appreciate if you can send us a screenshot at contact@iphonetricks.org with the struck trough red bell icon. We can use it to send a report via Apple support and include this fix in an upcoming software update.
I am having this same problem! Missing a lot of calls
Marsha, thanks for mentioning. This should be fixed soon!
I am having the same problem that many commenters are describing. I just updated to OS 14.0.1 and am still having the issue – the phone randomly mutes the ringer volume. It’s very frustrating as I’ve been missing important phone calls.
Rebecca thanks for commenting. Yes, we can understand how frustrating this is. We’ve provided feedback to Apple about this and hopefully they will release a software update with a fix soon.
UGH! This is annoying! I even went to Apple to buy another iPhone 11 Pro Max because I first thought it was an iPhone problem:( but lucky it’s not a hardware issue so I really think it’s the iOS 14’s fault :( I literally see the sound bar goes all the way down but when I move the settings page a bit it goes back to the sound level/the way I wanted it to be. It is indeed a visual glitch and I rlly hope apple fixes that cuz it’s SO ANNOYING OMG IT LITERALLY TRIGGER MY OCD UGH- I know it’s a visual glitch because I can still hear the alarms and when my friends calls me it is loud, so there is definitely no problem with the sound but it’s gotta be a glitch. APPLE- I BELIEVE IN U… FIXZ THIS!
Thanks for confirming Leo. We’ve also reported this bug to Apple. A fix should come soon!
Same problem for me.
iOS 14.0.1 does not fix the issue.
Thanks for your feedback Fausto and for your entire contribution to this article.
I’ve updated to 14.0.1 and am still having the problem where the ringer and alerts are not working. The slide bar on settings is all the way down. Happens randomly. Missing calls and messages. My alarms still work. It’s very frustrating when you are expecting calls and then realize you missed them because the phone turned the volume off again.
Yeah had this problem today and was late work
. Really a bad day. I had to turn off my phone to make the alarm sound work again and it’s also messed up all my widgets all the picture were gone. Really I hope they fix it soon because it really got bad and I don’t want to experience this again
Sorry to hear that Alexandra. I know how frustrating this can be. It seems that we need to wait for a software update to fix the muting Ringer and Alerts bug. Regarding widgets, did you manage to get your pictures back?
I’m not receiving any audible notifications while on calls, just visual ones since I updated last week. Annoying as hell. Restarts, buttons etc. Nothing works. All sounds and notifications work when I’m not on calls. I hope they didn’t make “deliver quietly” a permanant thing in ios14. I’m hoping it’s a bug.
Bill thanks for your feedback. We will attempt to replicate this problem and let you know.
I stumbled on here and have spent a lot of time on this website these last two days. You guys do well. Thank you.
Thanks for the appreciation. We’re trying our best to provide solutions, but sometimes we can only wait for Apple to issue a fix in a software update.
P.S.: Hope that you’ll stick around. ;)
iPhone XS on iOS 14.01
Intermittent issue with volume muted as well.
When the problem does occur, here are my results:
-Notification screen shows missed call/message.
-Sound settings: Volume slider set at minimum (side ringer buttons disabled)
-Test call, test message, & test alarm to device prior to changing settings back to max volume and/or reboot: No sound; Haptic feedback only.
-Problem is intermittent and unable to purposely reproduce glitch, however only seems to occur AFTER using AirPods Pro or other Bluetooth device.
I don’t think Bluetooth is the culprit. I use wired headphones and get no sound or vibration when on calls.
Bill, thanks for pointing this out!
Jay, thanks a lot for your contribution. That’s some valuable info that you shared. Hoping for a fix anytime soon now. iOS 14.0.2 should be imminent. We’ve sent feedback about this issue.
Glad I’m not alone. I updated my Iphone 8 last week to iOS 14.0.1 and have no sound coming from my iphone. Yes, the volume button has a mind of it’s own, and it does not function anymore. The only way I can make a phone call is with a Bluetooth device. In addition, I completed a factory reset, and that didn’t work either. I chatted with Apple Support last week, and they ran a diagnostic test which showed the hardware “passed” and was operating properly. I made an appt with the Apple Genius Bar to complete an audio test, etc. later this week. This is frustrating.
Martha, thanks for sharing your experience. We know it’s frustrating Please keep us updated with the outcome of your Apple Genius Bar appointment.
Update. After a 1.5 hour appointment with the Apple Genius Bar, my iPhone was diagnosed with an unrepairable hardware issue. They would not replace it without cost to me since I did not have the extended warranty plan. I’ve owned the iPhone for 14 months and still owe $$$. It is to my understanding that their audio diagnostic tests have to be run differently with the iOS 14.0.1 version versus previous software upgrades.
Thanks for the update. Sorry, to hear about the hardware issue. I hope that you can fix your iPhone or upgrade it soon. Any idea what could have caused the hardware problem? Have you dropped your iPhone or submerged it for a long time in Water?
In response to your questions. Genius Bar did not indicate what could have caused the hardware problem. My iPhone has “lived” in an Otterbox Defender case since I upgraded to it last summer, and is in mint condition. No water damage, cracked screen or scratches on it. I honestly believe it’s an iOS software problem Apple cannot replicate in house and are relying on their Apple Care subscriptions to remedy those who have it which I do not. They offered me a $100 trade in and to purchase an SE for $350; which does not include the $400 balance left on the existing iPhone. How do you communicate this/our information to Apple?
Thanks for clarifying. This is strange indeed. What remaining $400 balance are you referring to? If its iCloud balance you can sign in with your Apple ID on the new iPhone and get it back.
We submit bugs through Apple’s Product Feedback page. Here is the link: https://www.apple.com/feedback/
Are you in Australia? If so, you are covered for TWO years of warranty under consumer law. Notice how on the Apple care options when you phone there is a recorded message that says about one year warranty, and then something about your “consumer law rights” without them mentioning that you get TWO years. It happened to me. So, I would go back and request you get a new phone under your consumer law rights. They won’t necessarily tell you about it, unless you know about this. It happened to me some years back and I got a new phone. Good luck!

Well I am glad I found this thread. I had no idea what was going on. I could not prove it but I was sure my phone was not ringing when ‘some’ calls were coming through. On top of that ‘sometimes’ my alarms were not going off in the morning. Alarms later in the day were always fine. I thought that since this issue began to happen only recently that perhaps the introduced Sleep Schedule feature of iOS 14 affected the way Do Not Disturb impacted my morning alarms. But really I have no idea what’s going on.
Eventually I found this website and noticed that I too saw my ‘Ringer and Alerts’ volume bar was getting randomly set to mute. I can turn up the ‘Ringer and Alerts’ bar, force close settings and check later and it will be muted again even though I did not change any settings. So who knows what’s going on.
I just got off the phone with Apple Support and they verified that nothing was malfunctioning with my device. They are apparently recommending to ‘Reset Network Settings’. If this does not fix the issue then to ‘Reset All Settings’. And obviously if this does not work to back up and reset the device to factory and restore backup. So we shall see what happens next.
Jason, thanks for the in depth feedback. Keep us posted with the outcome if you apply the general fixes provided by Apple Support.
We have this problem on my wife’s iPhone X with iOS 14.0.1. We reset the entire phone back to factory. It worked for a few hours and the problem started again. We then noticed that her volume decreased as her eyes looked at the screen. This is the “Attention Aware” feature of FaceID. We turned that feature off and now her volume has stayed full for a while. We are suspecting that the Attention Aware feature might be glitching in her case. It might be gradually lowering the volume while she is on other apps (when it is now supposed to do so). Gonna try this for a while and see if the volume reduction problem is fixed. Fingers crossed.
Frank, that’s a great find! Thank you for sharing! Please let us know if this is fix is permanent and we will update the article with your find. Fingers crossed over here too!
I had the same problem. My usual morning alarm did not ring the next day. I looked up and came across this article. I tried setting up a quick alarm to see if it works, tried the Setting changes. Finally, I had to restart the phone once for the Alarm to sound.
I will monitor if this fixes it permanently.
Parag, thanks for describing your experience. Be careful not to miss anything important, the bug could return.
Same problem. Alarm did not ring and was 2hrs late for work because the slider was set to 0.
Trust in Apple destroyed…
Hagrid, thanks for sharing your feedback. We’ve reported this bug to Apple and are hoping for a fix as soon as possible.
Have been experiencing this auto muting of sound and haptics since upgrading and tried all the tricks about but nothing works and problem persists. I guess will have to wait for the next upgrade and hope Apple takes care of this irritating bug which can make a user miss important calls.
Parlekar, thanks for sharing your experience with this bug. Yes, we reported the issue to Apple and are also hoping for a fix, the sooner the better.
What a pain! Two days in a row I’ve slept through alarms due to this bug and almost been late for work. My phone’s alarms go off but no audio is played. The first two steps didn’t fix it. I had to reboot my phone. I’m curious how long that fix will stay or if I’ll have to do this process again.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Sorry to hear that it caused problems. Please let us know if it happens again after the restart.
Hey there! This issue still persists after restart continuously.
Thanks for reporting back.
iPhone 8, iOS 14.0.1 does not fix the problem. Intermittently the ringer & haptics becomes muted, and I don’t hear any notifications when on a call. I’ve rebooted, and reset network settings, to no avail. I called Apple and they were going to check and email me, but I haven’t received an email yet. Then I came across this website. Great job, wish they’d listen to you. btw, it’s not only a visual problem.
Angela, thanks for the feedback and for the bug confirmation. Let us know if you hear back from Apple.
iOS 14.2 did not fix the ringer alert sound muted issue on my iPhone X in the USA. I have tried all the listed fixes above also.
PJ, thanks for confirming the bad news! :-/ This is unexpected news.
Also having the same problem with my iPhone and iPad intermittently setting the ringer to 0 since the upgrade even after 14.0.1 so is my mother with her iPad. So annoying to constantly have to check if I’ve missed a call or text and checking to see if ringer has spontaneously reset itself to 0. They need to fix this.
Beth, thanks for confirming that you also encounter this bug. Yes, we hope they do fix it soon.
I tried rebooting, but it didn’t fix it. My timer will not go off or even display that it’s over, when locked. My alarms works fine; however, if I pick up my phone while it’s going off, it cuts the alarm volume dramatically, almost as if I turned it off. I have the 11pro, and this is a new issue with the ios14 update. At first I thought I was napping hard through timers.
Ben, thanks for sharing your experience. If the Alarm works that’s good. Be careful, some readers have missed important appointments because the Alarm did not go off. If the Alarm volume goes down, while ringing, when you pick up the phone, that might be a new behavior coming in iOS 14. The iPhone recognizes that you woke up because you picked up the device and is silencing the Alarm. Did I understand correctly what you said?
That’s correct.
I am having the same volume issue. It doesn’t effect my alarm but it does mute the ringer and text alerts. I’ve tried all the resets and nothing seems to work, my problem is def not only visual. Thanks
Jason, thanks for confirming. Yes, we are aware that this is serious and have sent a report to Apple about this bug, a while ago. Let’s hope that it will be fixed in the upcoming update.
@Patricia-$$$ balance is due to the wireless carrier as the cost of the iPhone was split up into 24 payments. Relieved to see the additional comments from other Apple consumers about the lack of sound/volume with their device after the iOS 14.0.1 was updated.
@ Angela-No, I’m not in Australia. Nice there’s a 2 year warranty.
Martha, thanks for clarifying. Hope that you won’t have similar problems again.
Tried rebooting and turning the “change with buttons” option off. Worked! Thanks so much :)
Rob, thanks for confirming. Be advised though, that in most cases this has just turned out to be a temporary fix and the bug can resurface at any given moment. Be cautious and don’t rely too much on your iOS alarms until a software update fixes this for good.
Following from my earlier post, I spoke with Apple support again and they confirmed they were aware of the issues and they are working on resolving it in the next software update.
@ Martha Neely oh, ok. Hope it gets resolved
Angela, thanks for reporting. Let’s hope the fix is in iOS 14.1, which looks like an imminent release: https://www.iphonetricks.org/ios-14-1-released-with-bug-fixes-and-improvements/
Here’s hoping…
Thank you for your comments.
However, I understand that Apple has now pulled the iOS 14.1 which was due to be released yesterday. I’m holding out as long as I can in hopes they will remedy this so my “iWon’t Work” iPhone returns to the former “iWill Work” iPhone. Have a good day.
Yes iOS 14.1 has been pulled and offered as a GM version to Developers. Whenever a GM version is available, it suggest that a release is imminent. We predict that iOS 14.1 will be launched Thursday, October 15.
iOS 14.2 update did not fix the lack of sound iPhone8. Bummer!
M Neely, thanks for reporting. You sure? Because we had plenty reports suggesting that it was fixed since the 3rd beta.
Negative. iOS 14.2 did not fix my iPhone 8.
Thanks for informing us. This is really strange. We’re getting mixed reports about this. A couple of readers have mailed us and. confirmed the fix, while others in this thread are still experiencing the problem. We can’t replicate it on our own devices at the moment.
iphone 7+. Did the 10S 14 upgrade, totally disabled all sounds and notices and alarms. Tried all the suggested fixes. Zip, zero, phone is almost useless to me. STINKS!
Michael, that’s terrible. Can you please mention if you’re running iOS 14.0 or iOS 14.0.1?
iphone 7+. Did the 10S 14 upgrade, totally disabled all sounds and notices and alarms. Tried all the suggested fixes. Zip, zero, phone is almost useless to me. STINKS!
I did the current update. I believe it was 14.0.1. Prior to that, I was running most current previous update.
ios 14 is the cause of the problem. Reset face id to original settings and problem is solved
Stef, you might be on to something here. Readers that are affected by this bug please perform the following steps:
Open Settings -> Face ID and disable Require Attention for Face ID and Attention Aware Features
Let us know if the muting Ringer and Alerts bug is fixed!
Michael, thanks for clarifying. We’ve just updated the article with a potential fix. Please check no. 4 and let us know if it helps!
I am not looking at my screen. My phone is in my pocket. I’m using wired headphones for calls and do not hear notifications. This telekinesis that’s occurring when people are looking at their screens is not the only issue. All my settings are proper to receive message notifications and have been since before the update. Just in case I, too, have magical powers over my phone I have disabled the Face ID thing and will report back.
Bill, thanks for confirming. Waiting for your feedback.
Duimen.

Stef, very good observation. Please let us know if this fixes your problem. In the meantime I’m also updating your fix in the article.
Worked for me!!! Thank you.
Alanna, thanks for confirming!
Hoi!
Alvast bedankt!
Since updating to 14, it has been a week and a half… and ive been late to work 5 times.. and not no 5 minutss late.. im talking the closest to on time was 30 minutes late.. to which twice i woke up 30 minutes after i was supposed to be there..
My next problem is how exactly do you explain this to your boss without sounding like a lazy irresponsible child full of excuses…
“mY aLArM DidNt Go oFf !”….. 5 x in 8 days.. this shit is serious and if i loose my job because of this… im going to get my revenge on apple. Hahaha (joker laugh).
Anthony, sorry to hear about this. We’ve update the article with a potential fix. Please check no. 4 and let us know if it helps!
i have same problem in my iphone8 with IOS 14.0.1
ringer and alerts turned off suddenly many times per day, because of that i lost many calls recently
Jnad, thanks for confirming. We’re all waiting for an official fix here!
I just cached the latest update of IOS by today, i am not sure but hope to fix this bug
Jnad, yes iOS 14.1 is out. Please let us know if it fixed the mutes and alerts bug for you. All details available here:
https://www.iphonetricks.org/ios-14-1-released-with-13-bug-fixes/
A family member has updated and it does not address the problem. Waiting for .2 now.
No need to wait anymore. You can install the iOS 14.2 Beta 3 now if this bug is too frustrating for you: https://www.iphonetricks.org/how-to-update-iphone-to-ios-14-2-beta/
iOS 14.1 did not fix the problem.
M Neely, thanks for confirming. iOS 14.2 Public Beta 3 or later does it. You can either wait for the public release or get the beta now. More details here: https://www.iphonetricks.org/how-to-update-iphone-to-ios-14-2-beta/
Patricia, I think that iOS 14.1 did not fix the mentioned bug, so tried to install iOS 14.2 Beta 3, but after download it, then go to Settings / General / Profile and try to install iOS 14.2 Beta but some error message said :
[profile installation Failed
Defaults could not be set for an unexpected reason] !!
I don’t know what is the reason ! , please help
Jnad, please let me know if you have other profiles installed on your iPhone. Go to Settings -> General -> Profile and let me know if there are older profiles installed. It also helps if you can perform a screenshot of the Profile screen and upload it to: https://imgbb.com/. Share the link here, it will help us understand your situation better.
Patricia, No there is not another old Profile installed on my iPhone, I will try to upload the Profile screenshot on the link you mentioned here
Patricia, please check this link: https://ibb.co/2dvCS9c

included my iPhone Profile screenshot
Jnad, thanks for providing the requested info. We haven’t encountered this problem before.
1. Have you downloaded the profile from the official Apple Beta Software Program page? (https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/)
2. Have you picked the iOS version of the profile?
3. Have you attempted to reboot your iPhone and try to install again?
Let us know.
Just did a ‘normal’ update to iOS 14.1 (18A8395). Problem all fixed. Thanks
Rodney, thanks for confirming. Be careful, from our findings the iOS 14.1 doesn’t fix the problem. Your fix might be just temporary. Please get back to us and confirm. Thanks.
Hi, After the IOS 14.1 update, the ringtone visual bug issue hasn’t been fixed. I still need to force quit or double check to correct the ringtone level. Since it is a visual bug, it does not affect the ring volume but it is still annoying, but I do not want to download IOS14 all over again to update to Beta. Are you sure it is going to be fixed with 14.2 and any ideas on when it will be released
Levi, thanks for commenting. Yes, it’s fixed in iOS 14.2 Beta Developer 3 or later. We understand that it’s time consuming to go for a beta version at the moment. Only go for it if you can’t live with the bug. If you got used to it, better wait for the public release. iOS 14.2 should be released in the upcoming weeks. We expect it to be released by mid November the latest.
thanks a lot Patricia, it is a relief
Levi, no problem. Glad we could help.
My problem seems to be a little different than most. I definitely have the volume slider issue but my ringtone and alarms seem to be working well. the problem I have is that for certain apps, mostly third party, when a notification comes through there is no audible or haptic alert.
Walmart, Zillow, YouTube, Amazon Shopping are just a few that i have noticed the problem. The rest of the app notifications seem to work fine, I don’t understand.
I first thought that it was a problem with my Apple Watch, I would lift my wrist and see a notification that I KNOW i didn’t feel or hear an alert for. I shut my Apple Watch off so it was not connected to my phone, turned my phone screen on and waited for one of the culprit apps to send a notification. Sure enough, after a little waiting I got an Amazon Delivery notification and it did not make a sound or vibrated, just the banner and then it was in my notification list.
I am currently on iOS 14.1 using an iPhone 11 Pro.
I don’t know if this is a version of the issue everyone else sees, if it’s a different bug or if the apps are not written properly. I am still missing important notifications and would like it fixed.
francis, thanks for your feedback. Yes, the behavior of your iPhone seems to be different. Just to make sure, your iPhone was locked when you received the Amazon Delivery notification, correct? It’s normal behavior for iPhones to display the banner alert without any audio alert, if you’re actively using the device.
1. Have you tried to reboot iPhone and see if the problem is fixed?
2. Have you tried to download and reinstall one of the apps in question and check if the problem goes away?
Waiting for your feedback.
Turning off the Face ID Attention Aware Features did not solve this problem for me. The ringer/alert silencing is still occurring randomly. Awaiting the iOS 14.2 fix.
Kathy, thanks for sharing your feedback. Yes, iOS 14.2 should be released anytime now. The GM version is already available for Beta testers: https://www.iphonetricks.org/ios-14-2-golden-master-fixes-new-ios-update-available-bug/
I just updated to ios 14.1 on my IPhone 11. This did not solve the problem. Neither text tone nor ring tones play. Timer tones do play. I believe this problem has persisted for at least 2 or 3 months across several updates. I’ve tried every suggestion I’ve seen now. Neither rebooting phone nor hard-rebooting phone help. The ringer and alerts slider is NOT all the way to the left. Change with buttons is off.
Has Apple officially announced a bug fix with any version? Or acknowledged it as a bug?
This “keep updating” in the absence of such an announcement sounds like guesswork.
Steve, our tests have shown that iOS 14.2 will fix this bug. The public release is imminent. iOS 14.2 GM has already been released to beta testers: https://www.iphonetricks.org/ios-14-2-golden-master-fixes-new-ios-update-available-bug/
That’s good to know.
iOS 14.2 is out in the meantime: https://www.iphonetricks.org/ios-14-2-software-update-10-features-15-fixes/
ios 14.1 no ring, no sound after picking up a call
ios 14.2. it rings now, but there is no sound after a call is answered. phone is unusable as a phone.
instant message apps have no problem with ring or with sound.
iphone 11 and iphone 6s both have the same behaviour.
pdwalker, thanks for updating us on this. We know this is really frustrating, but all that we can do is wait for Apple to fix it.
I started having a problem like this after my phone updated to iOS 14.2. The volume drops to a very low level after shutting off or snoozing the alarm, doesn’t matter which one. It’s particularly annoying when you hit snooze and then barely hear the second alarm (nearly missed an appointment today thanks to that). I guess I’ll have to start using some different device for a back-up alarm for now and try to remember to adjust the volume after waking up.
Hanna, thanks for updating us. This is really strange. Some users report that the bug is fixed by iOS 14.2, while others experience it for the first time.
Hi,
I have the exact same problem since upgrading to iOS 14.2.
Never had any issues with my alarm before this upgrade.
Also almost overslept for work because my volume dropped after hitting snooze…
I have no Face-id (iphone 6s) so I don’t have the option in my settings ‘Attention Aware Features’.
Can I find this option somewhere else in my settings?
Thanks in advance.
Daphne, thanks for sharing this. Unfortunately, Attention Awareness is a Face ID specific option that tracks when the user is looking at the screen using the Face ID module. We’re not sure what else to recommend at the moment. It’s a software glitch that has to be fixed by Apple. We will definitely upgrade this article as soon as anything changes!
I am still experiencing the issue, also after updating to 14.2. Iphone 11
I had an alarm set when an update was made during the night. It´s over a month ago. Since then the alarm
is ringing every morning 7 days a week, even if the alarm is not visible in the phone. We have checked all alarms, calenders, reminder etc and we can´t find anything. I hadn´t made an update for several years before. Have an old phone Iphone 6S
Eleanor, thanks for your feedback. That’s really strange. What software version is your iPhone running now? If you updated over a month ago, iOS 14.2 should be available in Settings -> General -> Software Update. You can disable all alarms and update again. This might flush the ghost morning alarm too.
Let us know if it helped.
Okay, this keeps getting more and more annoying. Today I realized that the volume on my phone also drops when I end a WhatsApp call. Right now I’m really wishing I hadn’t downloaded iOS 14.2 at all…
Hanna, thanks for reporting. I can confirm this too. I experienced it in the YouTube app. Volume controls starting going haywire while watching a video in full-screen. It want back and worth in both directions, mostly down though. I was watching the video together with my daughter, and she was constantly moving in front of the screen. I think that it has something to do with attention awareness. However, I have the feature disabled as mentioned at Step 4.
Right… I have a white noise app, that I can’t even launch after upgrading to 14.2. I have an old Iphone that also has this app, and it still works on that (i haven’t upgraded that)
The faceid thing fixed my phone! I’ve been struggling with this for weeks, the alarm goes off on the screen but my phone makes no sound whatsoever, even though I’ve double checked the sound over and over again. I have not even set up FaceID on my phone, but as soon as I turned off the faceid attention-thing the alarms work again!
S, thanks for confirming. Continue to monitor the situation to make sure that the fix isn’t just temporary.
I have had this problem since updating to 14.1; the problem is still there in 14.2. I have the wake-up set for 6.30, but there is no alarm, no matter what I do. I have an apple watch and the haptics are very faint, even though they’re set to prominent. I have overslept a couple of times; I now set another alarm for 6.33 in case the alarm doesn’t go off – some mornings it works and some it doesn’t.
Possibly related to this is the fact that sometimes the volume randomly seems to have switched itself to zero (slider all the way to the left) – but I can’t tell if this related to the problem. For instance, this morning the alarm didn’t go off at 6.30, but the volume hadn’t changed according to the slider. It’s so frustrating!
I’ve spoken with an Apple engineer who suggested a factory reset – which I did, but nothing has changed. I’m going to get in contact with them again…
Andrew, thanks for your info. This bug should be already well known to Apple because it’s been reported several times and as you say, it’s here since the release of iOS 14. Yes, most of the time the cause is the fact that the ‘Ringer and Alerts’ Volume is automatically muted. In some cases, disabling the ‘Attention Awareness Feature’ helps. Please do get back to us if you speak with Apple staff again and let us know if you can find out anything new.
I spoke to another engineer who requested that I try various things: 1) turn off bluetooth on the phone before going to bed, 2) turning off bluetooth on the watch before going to bed, 3) changing the alarm ringtone. Turning the bluetooth off on the watch made the alarm go off on the phone, but the watch did nothing; turning the bluetooth off on the phone meant that the alarm didn’t go off at all. The ringtone now seems to randomly reset to the one it was originally on. I will be contacting Apple again…
Andrew, thanks for getting back. Good luck with your next Apple support sessions. I hope that they can provide a better workaround this time. Keep us posted. Fingers crossed!
My iPhone 6s just updated to iOS 14.2 last night. I was awoken to full attention when my alarm went off at full volume this morning, even though I clearly remember turning it down to level three before going to bed last night. I am a snoozer so I unlocked my phone and turned it down to the correct volume, only to be awoken at full volume again nine minutes later. It has since happened again this morning as I just had another alert go off at full volume after being turned down once again. A quick search revealed this previous discussion but I have never had issues with the muting reported here in the past. Decided to report this since I thought it could be related.
Angie, thanks a lot for sharing this. Yes, this is definitely related. For the record, before the automatic update was your iPhone running iOS 14.1?
Yes, I believe so. I don’t pay close attention to the numerical value of the current iOS but I always update as soon as it’s recommended.
I just got my iPhone 12 pro 12/2/20. My phone rings loud, and then turns soft. I’ve turned off Face ID, require attention for Face ID, and attention aware features. Nothing helps. I’m also not receiving most text alerts. Both iMessage, and group messages. I have 14.2.1 software version. I’ve tried all possible solutions other than reset network settings. I’ve read that doesn’t help. I don’t know what else to do. Spent too much money on this phone for it not to work.
Pam, we understand your frustration. There are two separate bugs. Both of them are occurring at my end too:
1. The Ringer and Alerts Volume is automatically reduced during a call or while watching YouTube videos. Sometimes, disabling Awareness Attention works, other times it doesn’t. It’s very random.
2. Messages notifications not ringing and displaying is a separate bug showcased here: https://www.iphonetricks.org/how-to-fix-messages-notifications-not-working/
I’m currently using my Apple Watch as workaround, to avoid missing calls and notifications. Apple has to fix this in an upcoming software update.
I also noticed this morning that I can’t access my open tabs that are on my iPad in Safari, on my iPhone. All of my settings appear to be the same as my previous iPhone. Is that option no longer available?
Pam, are you talking about Handoff? Make sure that the feature is enabled by opening Settings -> General -> AirPlay & Handoff.
No, that option works fine. I’m talking about when I look on my iPhone at open tabs in Safari, I used to be able to scroll all the way down and see the tabs that were open on my iPad, select it, and the tab that was open on my iPad would now open up on my iPhone. They don’t show anymore. On my IPhone 8, they were showing up just fine. I’ve checked the iCloud option to make sure Safari was on, which it is. I’ve been seeing others complain about it as well, so it isn’t just happening to me.
Thank for replying. OK, I checked this on my iPhone 11 Pro, iOS 14.2, the feature works. I get the tabs open on my MacBook Air. Have you tried to sign out of iCloud and sign back in, on both devices, to see if it helps?
Patricia, logging out of iCloud and logging back in didn’t work. My husband’s 12 pro max doesn’t show the tabs either. I wonder if it’s something new with the 12 series.
Pam, we’re looking into this for you. Apparently this is a Safari/Cloud syncing issue. We just received a new email report from an user claiming that he get the tabs shown but they’re outdated. He still sees tabs that he has closed a long while ago. We will open a discussion about this issue. I will link it here soon.
Thank you for sharing Steph ‘s (from Belgium) comment about Face Aware function interfering with my phone alarm volume. Once I switched it off, I got my alarm volume back.
Renee, you’re welcome. Glad that we could help.
