How To Fix Messages Notifications Not Working On iPhone (iOS 14)
Last updated on December 12th, 2020 at 04:20 pm
Posted in Bug Fixes by Tyrone on November 10, 2020Are Messages notifications not working properly? Is your iPhone randomly failing to alert you when a new iMessage or SMS lands in? That’s because of an annoying iOS 14.2 bug, that causes alerts in Messages not to work as expected. Some texts are announced as usual with a sound and a Lock Screen or banner notification, while others are delivered quietly.
When notifications aren’t working, the red Messages badge is missing too. I’m talking about the red number, that hovers in the top-right corner of the Messages icon, to signal that one ore more unread texts are available. The issue occurs for both iMessages and regular SMS texts.
This is very annoying because iPhone users can miss important messages. Don’t get me wrong, the texts are actually delivered but you won’t have any idea bout it, unless you manually check the Messages app every now and then. That’s highly frustrating especially when you’re expecting important news via iMessage or regular SMS.
Update (November 17) – Even worse, the Messages notifications bug also issues read receipts to your sender, signaling them that you actually read their text, without you being even aware that it landed on your iPhone. This is the worst combo possible and could make your loved ones or friends think that you are trying to ghost them and avoid interaction.

How To Fix Messages Notifications Bug
Our test have shown that force quitting the Messages app or rebooting the iPhone aren’t reliable fixes. They might work temporary, but because this bug’s behavior is so random you can’t really tell if the problem is fixed and resurfaces later, or isn’t fix at all.
What’s certain is that the bug re-occurred on our devices after rebooting the iPhone, after various time frames.
At the moment, we don’t have a confirmed fix, but you can try the following to troubleshoot:
1. Disable Filter Unknown Senders
- Open the Settings app.
- Look for Messages.
- Scroll and disable the Filter Unknown Senders option.
2. Reset iMessage
One reader has informed us that he managed to fix the notifications bug by disabling Messages and turning it back On.
How To: Browse for Settings -> Messages and disable iMessage. Reboot iPhone and re-enable Apple’s free messaging service! Does it fix the missing Messages notifications?
3. Use Apple Watch
This option is rather a workaround. We’ve noticed that even when the iOS 14.2 notifications bug is occurring the Apple Watch still does its job and displays the notifications on your wrist.
If you own a watchOS device you can trust it, to announce you when new texts are available!
Update (November 20, December 12)
4. Upgrade To iOS 14.3
Apple is about to release iOS 14.3. The Messages notifications bug isn’t referenced in the update log published for the iOS 14.3 Release Candidate version.
However, Apple often squeezes bug fixes in updates without mentioning them. On the other side though, you would expect that such a highly awaited fix would be announced in the changelog!
Tip: If you can’t wait it out anymore until Monday, December 14, you can download and install iOS 14.3 RC 2 on your iPhone as instructed here.
Feedback: If you can confirm the Messages notifications fix, don’t hesitate to share it with us in the comments section, available below!
5. Other Fixes
Stephen mentioned a few other troubleshooting steps that you can try including:
– setting a custom message tone for the contacts and attempt to make the Messages notifications to work for important contacts.
– delete and recreate an important contact in the Contacts app.
Fact: However, none of the above fixed the Messages notifications not working problem.
Updated (November 28)
6. Exit Conversation
Reader Kori has noticed that the Messages notifications bug can be avoided if you’re exiting the conversation thread before dismissing Messages.
How To: After you read or send a text, tap the ‘back arrow’ (left pointing), available in the top-left corner of the screen to go back to the Messages home screen, the one where all conversations are listed.
Tip: You can also swipe-right, instead of tapping the back arrow, for a more seamless interaction.
Updated (December 12)
7. Disable Attention Aware Features
Some readers claim that disabling the Attention Aware setting in Face ID has improved the Messages notifications bug. We can’t confirm this but because this issue is so sever, you have to try everything out.
How To: Settings -> Face ID & Passcode -> Attention Aware Features (disable!)
Do you notice any improvements after tweaking this setting? Use the comments section, at the end of the article and share your feedback.
Fact: iOS 14 Messages notifications not working have been also reported on iPhones with a Home Button, thus no Face ID. This clearly proves that the Attention Aware feature can’t be the main trigger of the issue.
Messages Notifications Bug – Readers’ Feedback
- Liam: “Same thing here, it’s occurring even with non-iMessages, standard texts are also remaining silent.”
- Ian: “I’m on iOS 14.2 and don’t receive any notifications at all when my phone screen is off but they work if I’m using the phone at the time the notification arrives. Really annoying!”
- Jennifer: “This is happening to my boyfriend and I. Both on separate phones. Sprint. We both have IPhone 11s. Its so annoying. Even worse is that it shows that we READ the message but we actually didn’t and didn’t even get a notification for it. We just randomly check our messages and see that there was a message in there that we didn’t even know about. Its really really annoying and frustrating.”
- Kori: “I’ve noticed the same thing but seems to happen only when you leave the text thread open in Messages. Try going back to your message list (just hitting that left facing arrow) before switching to another app. I’ve noticed this helps the notifications come through as normal.”
Are Messages notifications not working on your iPhone too? Share your feedback using the comments section. Have you notice any specific behavior that triggers this bug? Don’t hesitate to mention it and we’ll attempt to fix this with the power of the community.
We’ll also use this topic to send a bug report to Apple. So, the more confirmations that stronger the case.
Related: Other bugs reported for iOS 14.2 are:
– iPhone keyboard lag when attempting to type Messages.
– Optimized battery charging for iPhone is automatically re-enabled after each iPhone restart or new charging cycle.
– Incoming call banner disappears and isn’t interactive. iPhone user can’t answer a call from the banner.
– iPhone speakerphone not working as it should, volume too low!
I find it hard to believe that Apple did not bother to squash this bug with the latest update. At this point, in the midst of a global health crisis it is more important than ever that people stay connected. We’re using our phones for work, using them to stay connected to family when separated. This bug inhibits our ability to communicate effectively. If you use your phone for business purposes or for medical reasons, or are visually impaired, this is a serious flaw. I’m not excited about one hundred new emoji, but will dance for joy when I hear that little “ding” again.
Bill, we 100% agree with your point of view. Let’s hope a minor software update with the fix is on it’s way.
P.S: At least they fixed the ‘Call’ button that was unresponsive in the Spotlight search result and the Contacts app. Which was another bug that one can’t imagine how it was allowed to reach a public iOS version.
This was happening to me a few times a week, not it’s a few times a day. In addition to a fix, I would like an explanation from Apple why there is nothing being said about fixing this. It’s unacceptable for how much money we give them buying their products.
Lisa, thanks for your feedback. Can you confirm that the bug has been fixed in iOS 14.3 for you?
My no ring-tone on messages started on my iPhone X after updating from 14.2 to 14.3 last night. Called Apple Support for help today and at one point the tech remotely accessed my phone. I thought my problem was fixed after getting the ring tone after Apple tech checked all my settings (which were correct) and had me power down the phone (which I had tried as a fix before calling Apple). After the powering down and restarting tech request, I used my husband’s iPhone to text my iPhone. After his phone showed the “delivered” note and I heard nothing from my iPhone, I started to tell the Apple tech that it didn’t work just as my notification sounded. Awesome was my response and thanks to the tech, but I spoke too soon as after that I no longer receive a ring-tone for messages. I regret not telling the tech I thought there was too long a delay to receive a one-word text from my husband’s iPhone to mine. I now have to notify family and friends to call me instead of messaging until this bug is fixed. 😞
Peggy, thanks for sharing this. Yes, it’s frustrating indeed when Messages notifications don’t work as they should. Let us know if you contact with the Apple support staff again and they provide a working fix.
Still not fixed in 14.4.
Confirm..still not fixed in 14.4. I have tried every “fix” on every Apple Support and iOS thread…Apple get this fixed!! The worst feature is not only are we not getting notified when a new text message arrives but the sender gets a “Message Read” return..even when You have that feature turned off.
Thanks for your info.
Here, in Portugal, iPhone 11 Pro iOS 14.2 same bug. Some iMessages messages don’t appear.
Nuno, thanks for confirming this bug. We’ve forwarded this topic as feedback to Apple. Hopefully, a fix will be available soon.
Katy here in Minnesota. Same issue. I thought maybe I was going crazy, glad to know it’s not just me, but sucks it still hasn’t been fixed. I’ve missed some very important messages over the last couple of days.
Katy, thanks for confirming. Yes, the same happened to me. The first time it occurred I thought I might get attention deficit episodes. :) Let’s hope that a fix is on it’s way. We’ll update the article as soon as it happens.
Same thing here, it’s occuring even with non-iMessages, standard texts are also remaining silent.
Liam, thanks for your feedback and for confirming that notifications for regular SMS messages are also affected by this bug.
P.S.: iOS 14.3 Public Beta has been released. If this bug is too annoying for you you can upgrade to the free beta and see if it helps:
https://www.iphonetricks.org/ios-14-3-public-beta-features/
I updated to the beta and it still is happening
Daniel, thanks for verifying this for us. We will update the article asap to reflect your findings. Hoping for an unplanned software update that will fix this!
Same thing is happening to me currently. I’ve been in contact with Apple and everything they told me to do hasn’t worked. I even factory restored my phone and it’s still happening. I have the new iPhone 12 pro and it worked fine on the beginning but now I won’t be notified if someone texts me. Also has noticed that the person who sends me the message says that I’ve read it already when I haven’t even been notified.
Daniel, thanks for your contribution. Wasn’t aware that read receipts are also sent out, for missing Messages notifications. I was expecting Apple support to confirm to you that this is a bug and a fix is is work in progress. Perhaps you spoke with first level support, that wasn’t update about the situation yet.
Danielle from PA. Same thing is happening to me. I am missing a lot of messages, from iPhone users mainly, because the notification doesn’t show up nor does the badge. HOW ANNOYING! Hopefully they fix this soon!
Danielle, thanks for confirming. In your case the issue seems to be more common for iMessages. We know this is frustrating. Stay tuned. We will update this article as soon as a fix becomes available.
Same here, IOS 14.2 on iPhone SE 2020 64GB. Does anybody here have the issue as well on IOS 13? I wonder if I should downgrade?
–Tim
Tim, thanks for commenting. Unfortunately, you can’t downgrade to iOS 13 anymore, because there’s no iOS 13 version that’s still signed by Apple. You can however downgrade to iOS 14.1 which is a software version that’s free of the Messages notifications bug.
I have 14.0 with the bug and refuse to go any further.
Bill, you sure that you’re not having the bug that randomly mutes Ringer and Alerts? This was the most common problem 14.0 to 14.1. It’s fixed in iOS 14.2 but this new bug that fails to display notifications for Messages has replaced it.
I am receiving visual confirmation of texts. When making calls or using Facetime I’m not hearing them. I manually raise the ringer volume and still nothing. I understand from subsequent updates that people are now missing texts altogether. That is why I refuse to go any further. It’s bad enough I can’t hear them when they come in but at least I have visual notifications.
Bill, thanks for clarifying. Yep, that’s a wise move. However, most of us have been lured by the 15 bug fixes delivered by iOS 14.2, without knowing that an extra more serious bug came with the package.
THis is disasterous for me and people keep thinking im ignoring them, i use iMessage massively on iPHone, iPad and Macbiook Pro and its driving me mad. I’ve tried all the suggestions you made and a few others like setting custom message tones on the contacts it fails for, most importantly my other half! and nothing is working – deleted and recreated the contact, even tried updating to 14.3 beta 2 and it’s sadly still happening on that too :-(
THe only thing i havent tried is completely deleting the chat thread because i dont want to lose all our old messages – wonder if i can back them up somehow first then delete it to try…
Stephen, thanks for sharing this. Can you please let me know when this problem started for you? Right after updating to iOS 14.2? If this is the case you can attempt to downgrade your device back to iOS 14.1.
If you still want to try and delete the entire thread in Messages, you need to perform a full iPhone backup via iCloud or iTunes before to make sure that you have your data saved. Next, delete the conversation and see if it helps. However, this bug is serious and I doubt that this could fix it. Do get back to us and let us know if you managed!
I’m on ios 14.2 and don’t receive any notifications at all when my phone screen is off but they work if I’m using the phone at the time the notification arrives. Really annoying!
Ian, thanks for confirming this. Stay tuned. We’ll update the article as soon as a fix becomes available.
This is happening to my boyfriend and I. Both on separate phones. Sprint. We both have IPhone 11s. Its soooo annoying. Even worse is that it shows that we READ the message but we actually didnt and didnt even get a notification for it. We just randomly check our messages and see that there was a message in there that we didnt even know about. Its really really annoying and frustrating.
Jennifer, thanks for your feedback. You described the problem perfectly. It’s time for Apple coders to do their homework and push an update with the fix for it!
I have had the same issue happening for the last couple of weeks. I had an iPhone Xs Max, upgraded to iOS 14, and then the problems began. Upgraded to 14.2, problems persisted. Purchased a 12 Pro Max last week, upgraded to 14.2.1, and the issue keeps happening. It would be great if Apple could send a fix ASAP. This isn’t a little quirk, it’s a problem with a major function and feature of the software.
Jordan, agreed. This is one of the most serious bug hitting iOS in a while and Apple does seem to take its time to fix it.
I have been having the same problem since I got my new iPhone 12 Pro. I’m updating right now to 14.2.1 but from what I’ve read in the comments, looks like it still doesn’t fix it. At least I know now that it’s a bug not just some hidden setting somewhere that I have wrong. How can I make sure to be notified when you guys update the article with a fix that works?
Tiffany, thanks for your feedback. You can follow us on Facebook or Twitter. We post as soon as a fix or software update is released:
https://twitter.com/iTricks_org
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Itricksorg/479679288800895
I’m having the same issue. I am receiving messages and no notification so sometimes it’s hours before I reply to the message because I wasn’t aware I had a message.
Ashley, thanks for confirming. We’ll update this article as soon as a fix becomes available. Stay tuned.
Here is Wisconsin, having the same issue with my iPhone 12 Pro Max running 14.2.1. It happened with 14.2 also so the update didn’t fix it nor cause it. It is REALLY annoying. I have new texts and have no idea they are there. If my phone is open (not locked) then I get the notification, but otherwise I do not get anything.
Matt, thanks for confirming. Let’s see if Apple will issue iOS 14.2.2 today and fix it! Fingers crossed.
Happening to me as well. It has been months on/off! I’ve missed some very important messages. Even today (11/25), my gf thought I was ignoring her and she was meeting me at my job to drop off lunch. I was pissed! I luckily happened to open the messages app at the time.
Apple needs to fix this!
Jerome, it’s very strange how Apple can allow this to go on for such a long time. Perhaps we will get a fix today, Thursday is Apple’s day of releasing minor updates.
Here’s something. My daughter picked up an XR yesterday updated to the minute. She’s receiving all visual and audible notifications. She hasn’t done the widget thing. Any way to un-widget these phones?
Bill, widgets are enabled automatically when an iPhone is updated to iOS 14.0 or later. What you can do is to remove them from the Home Screen. But the widget option remains active, you can’t disable it. To remove widgets from the Home Screen just long-press on an app icon and select Edit Home Screen, or long-press on an empty spot on the Home Screen to enter the jiggle mode. Tap the ‘-‘ that hovers on top of each widget to remove it. Let us know if it makes any difference.
Got rid of the widgets. No change.
Amber in WV! This just started happening to me a couple weeks ago – I couldn’t figure out what was going on!! It doesn’t happen all of time – it seems to be so sporadic? I really thought I had done something, so I’m relieved to know I’m not the only one. Like so many on here, I’ve missed some important messages. Hopefully this gets fixed & soon – it’s very annoying given how much you pay for these phones.
Amber, thanks for confirming. Yes, it’s on and off. Sometimes notifications work normally, other times they’re not showing up at all. Very tricky and misleading.
I’ve noticed the same thing but seems to happen only when you leave the text thread open in Messages. Try going back to your message list (just hitting that left facing arrow) before switching to another app. I’ve noticed this helps the notifications come through as normal.
Kori, thanks for mentioning this. We will update the main article with your tip and credit you with this find. Really appreciate your contribution.
I’ve been experiencing the same issues here in Canada as well, glad to know I’m not the only one. My phone is currently updated to iOS version 14.2 and I can’t seem to make any kind of sense of when it will notify me or not. Happening with both iMessage and SMS messages and it is incredibly sporadic and frustrating. I’ve tried every suggested fix online and nothing seems to work. Hoping for a fix soon because of how many texts I’ve missed and problems this has caused for so many of us!
Ashley, thanks for sharing. We can confirm that it helps if you exit the conversation thread in Messages, before you close the app. If a discussion remains opened, it won’t notify you when new messages arrive.
Hi! From Canada here, in Quebec (Vidéotron). IPhone 8 but my phone is updated with iOS 14.2. Exactly the same case. So happy to find this page because I thought i was crazy! 🤪 there’s really a bug here. It’s soooooo annoying!
Karine, glad that we could help you find out more. Yes this bug is misleading. It makes you unsure about your perceptions. ;)
Glad this isn’t just me but it’s a major issue – I’m not getting messages on any messaging apps – WhatsApp, telegram etc. When I’m at my desk I can get them through on the desktop app but when I’m out, I might as well have my phone off. iPhone X 14.2.
Cvsi, thanks for sharing this. You sure that your Mobile Data is turned ON when you leave your office? It might disconnect from Wi-Fi and this is why you don’t get the messages. The bug described in this article doesn’t block new texts. The texts land on the iPhone, its the notifications that aren’t playing, thus you’re not aware of the new messages unless you manually check them. Are you also missing the notifications or the texts altogether?
Hi there.I am also after updating to 14.2 on my Iphone SE (older one) not receiving any updates on whats app (and probably also on messages) Normally I will see and hear if I receive a whatsapp message. Now I have to go into whatsapp, then click on a chat and only then I will find out if someone has said something new. This is so annoying. Thanks for any help.
Marlene, thanks for confirming. Unfortunately this is an iOS 14.2 bug and we need a fix from update included in an upcoming software update.
Peter here, in Ireland. On iOS 14.2 with iPhone 11 – same issue as many other users have reported, iMessage and standard messages intermittently not being notified, seems to be becoming more frequent not being notified. This nearly caused an argument 🙂
Peter, thanks for confirming. I know the danger. This is amplified by the fact that the sender receives your read receipt and thinks that you read the message although you haven’t even been notified about it.
Okay Apologies. My whatsapp problem was not because of the update. (blushes)
Marlene, no problem. Can you share what happened?
I am having this same problem on my iPhone XR.
Anthony, thanks for confirming.
Had the issue of not getting audio notification or screen wake up since ios 13/XS Max with non-imessage. Got the 12 pro max and still having the issue. Its also a hit or miss, sometime it notifies me and most of the times, it doesn’t. No rhyme or rhythm.
Johnny, thanks for sharing this. We haven’t been aware of this bug in iOS 13. For me, it started in iOS 14.2, or at least that’s when I noticed it. I tend to use the iPhone a lot on Silent mode though. Lots of us still waiting for a fix here. Welcome aboard!
Yup iOS 14.2 has done this to me too. I’ve been late on responding to a lot of messages in the last week or so because of this. Tried the possible fix and it didn’t work for me. Come on Apple, in the middle of a global pandemic? And you are only offering newer iOS to those who are getting the iPhone 12? I literally just got my 11 in March, no way in hell am I paying to upgrade already. If they can’t fix it maybe its time to get an android. lol
Solution #2 worked perfectly and easily: resetting iMessage.
Perfect simple solution. Thank you!
iPhone 6s, iOS 14.2
Richard, thanks for confirming. Please be cautious, because the bug might resurface. Let us know if this fix is permanent or you’re missing notifications again.
I reset iMessages in my settings which fixed the issue for almost everyone in my contacts except for 1 person who ironically happens to be the person I text the most. Is this happening to anyone else? It’s driving me nuts.
Trisha, are you also exiting the conversation thread with that person before closing Messages? It seems that this is one of the causes that triggers notifications not to be shown. Make sure that you are on the Messages home screen, the one that lists all chats, before you exit or swipe the app away.
I used my iPhone 11 to get pages from my work and it’s no longer notifying me of these pages that come as text messages. I’ve tried all of the above fixes and nothing corrects the situation. This started after I loaded ios 14.2. My husband just got a new iPhone 11 yesterday and it does notify me of his text messages but not my son’s from his android phone. I REALLY need to get notified about the pages from work. I can’t believe they haven’t fixed this!!!!! :-(
Theresa, yes we know how frustrating this is. We’ll update the article as soon as a fix becomes available.
I thought I’d follow up on my post – a new update for WhatsApp came in, I installed it today & restarted the phone. When it turned back on a message came
Up on my MacBook saying that FaceTime had just been logged into on the phone & from that moment, both all notifications started to come in & haven’t stopped since. iOS 14.2 iPhone X
Cvsi, thanks for clarifying this. Glad you managed to solve your issue.
I’m having the same issue with my iPhone 11. I talked with a customer service agent and he suggested I do a complete factory reset. I set up my phone as a new device and did not install the backup. He said the backup would likely contain a corrupt file that was causing the bug. This DID NOT work. I’m still not getting notifications.
Tom, thanks for reporting. Obviously, that customer service agent has no clue about this bug. Which is a bit worrisome because, literally every person that I know is encountering it, and still some people from the support staff don’t know about it, or at least pretend to not know, because there is no permanent fix at the moment.
Hi my mother has an iphone 7, apparently with ios 12.2.0. She is also not receiving badges, and auditory notifications, but the actual message. Is there a 12.2.1 update for iphone 7 yet? From my understanding it is yet again another ios bug. Any advice is appreciated. Stay safe out there! ♥
But the actual message is receiving silent*
Matthew, I assume that you’re talking about iOS 14.2.0 and iOS 14.2.1. iOS 14.2.1 is only available for the iPhone 12 lineup, but it still doesn’t fix the Messages notifications bug. We have to wait it out a bit more. We’ll update the article as soon as a fix is available.
I’ve been having this problem as well on my iPhone SE which I just purchased in September. I thought it was just my phone until I found this site. Interestingly, visual and audio notifications will show up on my linked iPad running on 14.2 even when they intermittently don’t show up on my phone. I’m also noticing the intermittent issue with notifications on my Apple Watch as well. In addition, I’ve found that some random outgoing messages that appear to have been flagged as delivered on my iPhone actually aren’t always received by the recipient! All very frustrating to say the least!
Thanks for sharing your feedback. The delivered status of messages, that aren’t actually delivered to the recipient is a problem that I wasn’t aware of. Let’s hope that Apple will fix the Messages notifications bug asap!
I have been having an issue with my iPhone 11 Pro Max since 11/4/2020- sporadically my phone will push all incoming calls direct to voicemail – I don’t see a missed call- my phone does not ring- I only receive a notification of a new voicemail. I have had over 28 people at Verizon try to assist with this- I have had a new refurbished iPhone 11 Pro Max shipped to me and it is now happening on that phone as well- Verizon claims no other complaints on this matter. Is this happening to anyone else ??
Danielle, thanks for sharing this. Are you getting LTE coverage in your location on your iPhone 11 Pro Max, or the area has poor signal and your device is on 3G connectivity?
I have never had my read receipt on and ever since the IOS 14 update, it will not “turn off” meaning it keeps showing even though I have it disabled in settings. I have done everything that people suggesting from re-booting several times, signing in and out, turning it on and then back off and nothing works. I cannot believe that it has been almost 1 month and there is no solution or fix yet. I thought that the recent update would have fixed it but no luck.
Johanna, thanks for signaling that read receipts can’be turned off, yet another repercussion of the Messages notifications bug. Yes, I agree fixing this issue has already taken way too long.
I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max on ios 14.2 and it’s not just Text and iMessages that aren’t working for me. It’s all notifications. I’m not getting FB Messenger notifications either. All settings have been checked and rechecked.
So frustrating when I have the phone for the purposes of communication and I can’t even rely on knowing I have a message – of any sort!
Rachel, that’s true. WhatsApp notifications are missing too. Even worse, this bug doesn’t seem to be addressed in the upcoming iOS 14.3: https://www.iphonetricks.org/ios-14-3-gm-version-doesnt-fix-important-bugs/
Glad it’s not just me. I had Verizon send me a new phone cuz i thought it was my phone. And of course the people at Verizon didn’t even mention it wasn’t my phone but the system. SMH. Hoping for a fix ASAP.
Jill, apparently we do have to wait it out even longer. iOS 14.3 GM doesn’t address this bug: https://www.iphonetricks.org/ios-14-3-gm-version-doesnt-fix-important-bugs/
Same thing happening to me! I really thought I was just being forgetful and it started to worry me!
Cynthia, the good new is that you’re healthy. The bad one is that this bug hasn’t been addressed in iOS 14.3 RC: https://www.iphonetricks.org/ios-14-3-gm-version-doesnt-fix-important-bugs/
Good news: RC version of iOS 14.3 seems to fix the problem. Even if they don’t explicitly mention it in the release notes.
I’m hearing mixed things on that one. I hope you’re right. I’m holding at 14.0 At least I’m getting visual notifications.
Louis, thanks for sharing. Have you tested it out yourself? We can’t confirm this!
Hi! I did test it myself. I’ve been using 14.3 beta versions since their release and the problem was always there. But with the RC version, it suddenly disappeared. I’ve been using the version for about 48 hours now, and so far so good. But I must admit I’m still nervous, especially with Bill’s comments! I have a iPhone XS.
Louis, that’s great. For me it was happening very random. So, I’m not able to call it yet. However, you might want to check out RC 2: https://www.iphonetricks.org/ios-14-3-release-candidate-2-software-update/
Same issue has been happening for weeks for me on iOS 14.2 I have contacted Apple numerous times and they sound stupefied by what they’re hearing. I have reset settings, logged out and logged back into iCloud. Even restored to factory settings and it still happens. I bought this iPhone 11 brand new a month and a half ago and I am enraged at the lack of support and communication Apple is giving all us right now.
Thanks for sharing your feedback. We’re in the same boat here. iOS 14.3 is only days away though and there is a big chance that it will fix this annoying bug: https://www.iphonetricks.org/ios-14-3-public-release-date/
i bought iphone 11 last week and yesterday after updated to 14 suddenly notification problem happen theres no sound notification.i hope the new update will fix the problem
Ramil, thanks for reporting. Is only the sound missing from your notificaton? Do you get the badge or the banner when iPhone is locked?
Can we just say that 14 has been a disaster and blow it up and start over? This issue is many different things to many different people and nobody has a fix.
Bill, yeah iOS 14 has definitely more bugs than the average iOS version, but it also brought lots of many new features.
just fixed my girlfriends phone that was doing this
general < reset < reset all settings
–
Pros:
phone rebooted and now all notifications are working
Cons:
Have to reset up background (but not icons) and apple pay cards
hope this helps
Steve, thanks for sharing this. I assume that the iPhone in question is running iOS 14.3, correct? Users report that this bug is fixed by updating to iOS 14.3. Can you confirm that you’ve been still experiencing the Messages notifications bug in iOS 14.3 and had to ‘Reset All Settings’ to fix it?
This was on iOS 14.4
Thanks for getting back. Can you also mention what notifications were missing? Just those for the Messages app? or third-party apps too?
I have iOS 14.3 and this bug happened to me after I upgrade to this version
Nio, thanks for confirming.
Same problem with my Iphone XR. Hope a fix is coming soon….very frustrating!
Amy, thanks for confirming. We will update the article as soon as a fix becomes available.
Hi, this happens to me to. Just updated my iphone x to ios 14.3 and got this whatsapp notification problem. Messages appear only when I open the app, although I had the background app refresh on and enabled all the notification settings.
Thanks for confirming. I guess we can hope for a fix in iOS 14.4.
So I’m not alone! Not only is it messages, it’s other apps as well. It was happening on 14.2 and the same on 14.3. iPhone 12 Pro MAx
David, thanks for sharing your feedback. This is one of the most mysterious bugs we’ve encountered in iOS.
Same bug for me. iPhone SE iOS 14.3 and cant get text message notifications. I did all of the “proposed fixes” above and nothing has helped. Fishers Indiana here
Thanks for sharing this. Has this bug disappeared after updating to iOS 14.4?
I just updated again to ios14.4 hoping that it would fix the problem. I have not had text notifications since upgrading to the original ios14 a few months ago which is a major problem for me because I use my phone for work and need to know as soon as I get a text. I have tried EVERY fix out there I’ve been able to find with no success.
So, you’re still having notification problems in iOS 14.4?
I upgraded to iPhone 12 Pro in November and am running iOS 14.4. From the very start using my new phone this “no notifications “ has been a problem. I’m an apple beta user and I keep expecting that the next beta will fix it, but no luck there. I run my own business and this is seriously impacting my work. I’m incredibly disappointed in Apple at this point.
