iOS 16.1 update
Apple has released iOS 16.1 build number 20B82. It’s the first major iteration to the 16th iOS generation and the fourth update after 16.0.1, 16.0.2 and 16.0.3. Check out all new features, bugs fixed, new issues and more!
iOS 16.1 Issues
Check out the problems listed below before updating to this new release. Available fixes or workarounds will be also updated:
- 1. Black Screen on Lock Screen. Not responding to taps. Reported by Steph and kok.
Workaround: Use Side Button or force restart iPhone. - 2. Keyboard lag when using both built-in and third-party keyboards like Gboard. Reported by kok and Steph.
- 3. Cannot Verify AirPods error popping up for some users although wireless earbuds are genuine.
- 4. iPhone 14 sleeping in Control Center glitches out before entering Always On Display mode. Reported by Reddit user.
- 5. Next Alarm not showing in Lock Screen widget. Reported by James14.
Fix: remove and re-add widget. - 6. Lock Screen Weather widget not working when Location Services are turned off.
Workaround: Not sure if this is a bug, but definitely an inconvenience. Use the Home Screen widget instead that works with selected location. - 7. Carrier data not working after update for some iPhone 14 Pro Max user on AT&T. Reported by dsdxp.
- 8. Dynamic Island stutters when locking iPhone 14 Pro with Side Button and display transitions to AOD. Reported by Rode.
Fact: Not fixed since iOS 16.0. - 9. WiFi keeps disconnecting after iOS 16.1 update. Reported by Gaedupe (iPhone 13 Pro Max) and many more.
Fix: This issue has been reported since the early beta version. Here is a potential fix! - 10. Siri can’t open Apple Maps when iPhone is connected to CarPlay. Reported by Ivan.
- 11. Face ID stops working after iOS 16.1 update for some users. Resetting doesn’t work it’s stuck at the “lower your iPhone / raise your iPhone” stage. Reported by Megan.
Fix: N/A more details here. - 12. Live Activities not showing up on Lock Screen or Dynamic Island. Reported by Lucas.
Fix: Most of the time you have to turn ON app specific Live Activities in settings as shown here. - 13. WiFi not connecting at all. Screen freezes when Wi-Fi settings are opened. Reported by Marisa (iPhone 13 Pro).
Fact: this is an isolated case, so far. - 14. iPhone self-rebooting every 15-20 minutes. Reported by Marisa (iPhone 13 Pro).
Fact: It’s an isolated case at the moment. - 15. Black wallpaper bug: current Home and Lock Screen wallpapers are unexpectedly replaced by a plain black background. Issue occurs most often when older photos are used as wallpaper. Reported by Mattie.
Temporary Fix: Reboot iPhone | Change wallpaper| More fixes here. - 16. iPhone not ringing and not vibrating occasionally. Reported by Lucy (iPhone 14 Pro Max) and Hope (iPhone 11).
- 17. iPhone freezing randomly after iOS 16.1 update. Reported by schneexx (iPhone 13)
- 18. iPhone self-rebooting after iOS 16.1 update. Reported by Astan (iPhone X).
- 19. iPhone charging very slow even when using fast charger. Reported by Mohamad (iPhone XR).
Fix: Try the suggestions posted here. - 20. Phone badge missing number only a red dot is displayed without the count. Reported by Lou (iPhone 8).
Fix: This seems to be a Voicemail issue. Read more here. - 21. Apps crashing after a couple of minutes since iOS 16.1 has been installed for Lonnie.

iOS 16.1 Features
This update brings over a dozen new features. Most of them are available in the release notes:

iOS 16.1 Problems Fixed
The release notes mention three bugs that have been addressed by this update:
- 0. Touch screen issues for iPhones with aftermarket screen replacement have been FIXED!. Confirmed by Diego, Alan and others.
- 1. Deleted texts might continue to appear in the conversation list in Messages.
- 2. Dynamic Island content not available in Reachability view.
- 3. CarPlay not connecting when using a VPN app.
- 4. Live Activities not available in the Apple TV app. (Status: -)
- 5. Volume can’t be adjusted during a call, when the iPhone is next to your ear. (Status: Not fixed!)
- 6. Swipe Up Home Animation stutters when trying to return to Home screen. (Status: Mixed Reports)
- 7. Dynamic Island stutters when locking iPhone 14 Pro with Side Button and display transitions to AOD. (Status: Not Fixed)
- 8. Keyboard not showing up when swiping for Spotlight Search. This glitch has been reported in previous iOS 16 versions too. (Status: Fixed)
- 9. Excessive battery drain has been fixed in this release.
- Touch Screen issues for older iPhone models with screen replacement appear to be fixed.
However, we expect other issues to be fixed without being highlighted. We’ll test them out and let you know. Below you have a list of bugs reported in the iOS 16.1 RC version:
Fact: This update also includes a significant amount of security fixes. You can check them all in Apple’s security document.
iOS 16.1 Download
- This update is available, as usual, over-the-air in Settings -> General -> Software Update.
- Tap Download and Install and be patient until this release is requested, downloaded, prepared, verified and installed on your device.
Installation Problems?
- iOS 16.1 stuck on Update Requested – this happens because Apple has also released macOS Ventura in the same time and the servers might be overloaded.
Fix: Go for Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage -> iOS 16.1 -> Delete Update and restart the process. - Softare Update failed an error occurred downloading iOS 16.1? This might happen if you don’t have enough storage space available. More details here.
Fix: Free up more space in Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage. - Unable to Check for Update iOS 16.1 – This happens when your device is running an beta version and you’ve deleted the iOS 16 Beta Profile. More details here.

Having issues with:

mine 12 pro max just today 10th of November 2022 my phone is keep on restarting so i cannot update my ios into IOS 16.1.1

Thanks for reporting. Have you checked the storage space available on your device? Are the restarts occurring when you open a specific app or randomly?
Is the front camera not working with any app i.e. Camera, FaceTime, etc? We haven’t seen this problem mentioned before for iOS 16. Is Face ID working on your device?

P.S.: iOS 16.1.1 has been release with bug fixes.
After updating to 16.1 im having the following:
Lock screen black even when i touch it repeatedly .
Delays in typing (google keyboard)
Power consumption increased especially in standby mode

1. Lock Screen turns on when your press Side Button? or what do you have to do to turn it On? Does it happen every time or occasionally?
2. Have you tried to remove and reinstall Gboard?
3. Let us know if this persists after 48 hours since updating. The first day extra activity could be caused by new OS reindexing data.
Screen turns on when pressing side button . Happens occasionally. Rebooting the phone is not solving the issue.
I un/reinstalled Google keyboard , that seems to do the trick for now , thnx 😉

Ok, so Tap to wake occasionally doesn’t work and screen remains black unless you press the Side Button.
Go for Settings -> Accessibility -> Touch -> Tap to Wake. Is it enabled? If it is turn it off wait a couple of seconds and turn it back On. Does it help?
What about Raise to Wake? Settings -> Display & Brightness -> Raise to Wake. Is it On? perform the same trick as above.
P.S.: keep us updated with the battery consumption. Our test shows that battery life has significantly improved in iOS 16.1 by 30 to 40%.
Upcoming alarm not showing in Lock Screen widget. ‘NO’ is displayed instead of the alarm time.
Thanks for the feedback. Try to remove the widget and re-add it. Also force restart the iPhone if that doesn’t work. Let us know if you have success.

yes its true. even my iphone 13 pro max having the same problem and updating the 16.1. its seriously affecting the phone. i cant use internet.
Someone suggested to disable Networking & Wireless in:
Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Location Services -> System Services -> Networking & Wireless. Does it help?
I have the iPhone 13 Pro. The following problems are occurring after the 16.1 update:
WiFi not connecting at all. Screen freezes when I try to click on WiFi in settings.
Phone keeps shutting off & restarting by itself every 15-20 mins.

Your next option would be to Reset Network Settings in Settings -> General -> Transfer -> Reset.
However, considering your second complaint I think that you might have to clean install iOS 16.1 using a computer and the Restore iPhone option as shown here:

Are you able to update to iOS 16.1.1 or the device reboots too frequent?
I have an iPhone 12. The 0.5 lens works perfectly, but for some reason when I use the normal lens, it ONLY focuses on things that are close to it and I have no idea why. If there’s more than like 3 inches distance it just won’t
focus.
Have you tried enabling/disabling Macro mode?
after updating to 16.1 i’ve noticed that all the non apple apps are greyed out and have under them the word waiting . If u try to update those apps from apple store it does not work.
in the end i have found a solution to this…you have to long press on each app and first select ‘prioritize download’ and the again long tap on each app and select ‘cancel download’ , and this ungreys the app and allows it to update and then it works perfectly., the only down side to this solution is that you have to do the steps for every app individually.

iPhone 13 pro max – 16.1 problems:
1. Wifi keeps disconnecting.
In settings it shows it’s connected (green checkmark) to a network. Exit to main screen, no wifi icon, apps say I’m off line & I should connect to the internet.

1. Yes, this WiFi issue has been reported in the betas too. With WiFi icon not showing in status bar, but the Settings app confirms the connection. You might have to clean install iOS 16.1 using a computer. Not sure what else to suggest. Let us know if it helps.
2. Can you detail the Apple Maps problem in CarPlay. You’re the second user to report this and it might be a significant issue that we haven’t reported yet to Apple. When iPhone is connected to CarPlay, Apple Maps crashes or what’s happening? Are you getting an error message? Can you share a photo at contact[at]iphonetricks.org?
iPhone 13 pro max – 16.1 problems continued:
3. I had a problem with some Apple Music downloaded songs grayed out & not available to play. hit/miss this morning.

With iOS 16.1 my iPhone X continues to have Lock Screen unlock issues. The Lock Screen freezes either after switching from Wifi to 4G connection (or visa versa), it also happens after call hangup. On average the Lock Screen freeze occurs once per 2 days.
Thanks for reporting. I know you’re encountering this issue for a couple of versions now. Everyone else seems to have it fixed in iOS 16.1. Could this be a hardware issue?
I did contact Apple support, they remotely checked my phone and found no issues. They recommended to either replace the sim card or reset the phone to factory settings (without applying a data restore afterwards).
I will start with replacing the sim card (work in progress); will keep you posted again.
I have the new 14 and messenger notifications don’t work on some contacts. I have deleted and reinstalled the app, I have turned off notifications and turned back on. Nothing seems to work. I bought the 14 because the same issue with my 11 as soon as I updated to iOS 16

What about the touch problems with iPhone X and aftermarket displays? Are the problems solved with 16.1?
Yes, they have been fixed.
Iphone 11. After ios 16.1 the wifi keeps disconnecting. On ios 16.0.3 the problem was not existed in my iphone.
The trigger is the turned on location for networking and wifi (find it in the privacy and security). Turning off the location for wifi and networking has solved the issue.
Please fix it in the next version of ios.

The background of the home and Lock Screen have turned black. After reboot is was gone but within 5 minutes it’s black again.
Icons are still visible.

Or, you can also update to iOS 16.2 public beta and see if the issue gets fixed.

since updating from iOS 16 to 16.1 I get random phone freezes on my iPhone 13. Usually it starts with an app being locked (e.g. a phone call). I can still unlock the phone, access the controls and other apps. I cannot use the buttons to reboot. Later on, the phone freezes completely and I cannot do anything. After a while, it reboots. Reported on Reddit too.

iPhone 11 with iOS 16.1 is stuck in Do Not Disturb. There is no way to change it. Even Apple is clueless.

I have iPhone XR just updated to IOS 16.1. My phone is charging very slowly using type-C to lightning cable (only 3% within 20min!). The issue started after updating the iPhone from IOS 16.0 to IOS 16.1.
I did try the following to solve the issue:
– I bought a new cable
– Forced Restarted my iPhone
– Turned off “optimized battery charging” option on my iPhone
– Changed the USB port
– Cleaned the lightning port on my iPhone
– Tried to charge it using my Mac mini instead of Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter
All of them failed.
What happens if you downgrade back to iOS 16.0.3?
iPhone 8 Plus swipe down feature on Home Screen doesn’t respond with the usual swipe down, when I tap at top it takes the screen down. This only happens at first start up. Another issue is the Phone notification shows a red dot only. No number of calls, etc. When I go to Recents then back out, it still shows a blank red dot on the Phone app on the Home Screen. If I go to Voicemail then back to Home Screen it clears the red blank notification. Share My Location feature not working properly upon startup. Location service shows previous day location of subject for share recipient. Takes multiple tries to give a location of shared users. All the above happens with the 8Plus not iPad.

Thanks Patricia. There’s a way to downgrade back to iOS 15.7.1 but these aren’t major issues, just annoying. I’ve also been kicked off one or two apps and had to reload my session but again it’s more of an irritation that gets resolved with a refresh effort on the app itself. Bugs will hopefully be addressed by an update. Reporting these bugs is important to users for many reasons.
After the 16.1 update 11 pro max. Every single app I have on my phone closes out minutes after opening. All of my apps.
Have you tried force restarting the device? Does it have problems with the storage space?
i have an iphone 10 i have downloaded the new IOS 16.1 and my screen still doesn’t respond to touch sometimes to fix it I am forced to hard restart my phone although that dosent always work.

I have the 12 pro max, it was working perfectly until the 16.1 update. Now I get kicked off one of my apps in mid use and I failed to receive text messages that were sent. The message alerts appeared on my Fitbit but nowhere to be found in my phone.

I’m not able to listen to songs with explicit content in Apple Music. I haven’t enabled any restrictions! Am I missing something?

My iPhone 13mini drops mobile data and I need to reboot the phone. This typically happens if I have been on wifi then move out of range. Mobile data is not kicking in until I reboot

All these errors do not appear to me all the time. Every 30 calls I can’t end the conversation by tapping on the screen.That’s the biggest fault I have.
Face id stopped working for me only once. After 20 seconds it turned itself off and on.
Since update 16.1 Fitbit sense repeatedly disconnects from IPhone14 pro Bluetooth. I have to forget Fitbit sense and re-pair numerous times a day…

Updated to 16.1 today…IPhone 11 switched itself to low battery mode, I was not near the phone to do this. Now I have to put manual notifications in to get text messages from my contacts? What is that about? This is very frustrating to try to use when now I have problems I did not have before.

Touch issues, auto scrolling, tap to open not working.
When autoscrolling happens a reboot takes care of it, thus far.
Touch Accommodations was helpful and I will continue to test.
Tap to Wake has been frustrating.

I updated to Ios 16.1 from 15.x and there were no issues in IOS15. I assumed 16.1 was safe, I was wrong.

New sim card doesn’t solve the issue. However, the unlock issue I have looks more and more the same as topic 1, where I can use the side button to workaround.
Occassionally this doesn’t help and I need to force restart.
However, the screen doesn’t turn black, just unresponsive.

Safari auto switches to Private mode and when I return to the public tabs they’re all deleted!

Land Rover dash cam app will not work in portrait mode since downloading iOS 16.1, it worked ok before the update. now when phone is turned on its side it just stretches the picture but leaves it on its side.

I’ve got an Iphone 11 and since the update messages are acting up. It randomly jumps back to the chat overview, instead of staying in the chat I last wrote in. Very annoying.
Thanks for reporting. Have you notice this only in Messages? These appear to be ghost touches. You’ve updated to iOS 16.1 directly from iOS 15 or you’ve been on an earlier iOS 16 version before?

I’ve updated from the latest version of 16.0 to 16.1.

I did the big update last night and the sound is very low and super distorted. It’s awful. Yes I’ve checked the volume in settings and there’s nothing lodged in the speakers. I’ve also shut the whole phone down and rebooted. Sounds like the speakers are busted now. I can barely hear anything. I have the 11 Pro Max HELP

After updating my iphone 11 pro max to ios 16.1 it reboots by it self every 15 minutes during using the phone its glitching and getting off please help us through..

iOS 16.2 will be released in December, before the holidays. We’re not sure if an iOS 16.1.2 bug fixing update will come out sooner.
And plz say if i use my phone like having the same issue without reinstalling the version till new one release is it fine?
Yes, it should be ok, but if you say that it reboots every 15 minutes… I imagine it’s not pleasant at all.
ROKU MOVIES streamed from iPhone 13 to tv. NO VOLUME. This started after iOS 16.1 installed. Tried with friends phone and sound worked perfect. How do I fix. I have tried reinstalling ROKU app. still no volume
Thanks for reporting Shirley. Are you able to tap into the the Roku audio settings. If the value is set to DDS try to switch for Auto-Detect and let us know if it works.
Audio works fine over here but some movies won’t airplay in full screen. I get the ‘AirPlay Wirelessly share content from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac’ screen. Can anyone help?
I updated my iphone 8 plus yesterday to ios 16.1.1 and it was working good the whole day until at night i was on a video call and suddenly the speaker stopped and everything hung then i restarted my phone and got to know the 3d touch wasnt feeling but was working, vibration is not working and the speakers are not working but if i call someone and keep the phone on my ear i can talk and hear but if i change to speaker the phone hangs and the call gets disconnected it is not as is the speakers have gone bad cuz a video wont even play when i am on my phone speakers but if i connect my airpods it will play directly so it definitely looks like a serious bug in ios 16.1.1 for iphone 8 plus users
