- To be updated!
iOS 15.6.1 Should I Update
It’s been less than 24 hours since the release, with no major bugs reported so far.
From the security point of view, yes you should definetly update.
Tip: If you’re running iOS 15.5, iOS 15.6, you should go for this update. We’re not sure about the dimension of the bug fixes, but it has to be at least one step forward.
Conclusion: If you’re on iOS 15.4 you might want to wait it out a couple more days until we receive more feedback.
iOS 15.6.1 Download
- This release is available as usual, over-the-air, in Settings -> General -> Software Update.
- Tap Download and Install, provide Passcode and follow the on-screen prompts until the update is requested, downloaded, prepared, verified and installed!
Fact: The size of the iOS 15.6.1 update file is small around 209.5 MB (iPhone XS) when updating from iOS 15.6.
iOS 15.6.1 Not Available
Is this new release not showing up in Settings? Here are some potential causes:
1. iOS 16 Beta
If iPhone or iPad is running an iOS 16 / iPadOS 16 Public or Developer beta version, iOS 15.6.1 won’t show up, even if the iOS 16 Configuration profile is deleted an device restarted.
Fact: You can install iOS 15.6.1 from iOS 16 if you choose to downgrade with the help of a Mac or Windows computer. More, details are available here.
2. Not Available In Your Region
It seems that Apple is currently drip-feeding the iOS 15.6.1 release. Some users from Europe, including members from our staff aren’t getting this update yet.
Tip: If you get iOS 15.6, iOS is up to date, be patient and try again in the upcoming hours.
3. Internet Connection Not Working
If you get the Unable to Check for Update error message, informing you that “an error occurred while checking for a software update”, check the device’s Internet connectivity.
Open Safari and try to load google.com
Tip: Reboot iPhone / iPad and try again!
Have you managed to update to iOS 15.6.1 / iPadOS 15.6.1? Did you spot any changes not mentioned in this article? What about bug fixes or new problems? Share your feedback in the comments!
Related: Apple has also rolled out macOS 12.5.1 (21G83) and watchOS 8.7.1 (19U67).
Some apps won’t update in App Store. I tap update, the spinning wheel shows up and then Update button is displayed again. Can you help?
Thanks for reporting noah. We’ve seen this reported for iOS 15.6 too.
First, try to force restart iPhone and try again.
If it doesn’t work and you have an app that’s expendable you can:
Open Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage -> [App Name] -> Offload App -> Reinstall
When it reinstalls the most recent version will be installed from the App Store.
P.S.: There’s a risk that the reinstall won’t work and you will temporary remain without access to the app in question.
Can’t connect with Bluetooth with latest update?!
Thanks for reporting. Have you tried rebooting the device?
If it doesn’t help you might have to Reset Network Settings in Settings -> General -> Transfer or Reset iPhone -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings. (Be aware that you will have to reconfigure WiFi networks if you perform this reset, so make sure that you know the WiFi password).
Bluetooth still not working on iPhone to connect to MacBook Pro, tried network reset. iPhone message states device not supported.
You mean it doesn’t work when you want to AirDrop files from iPhone to Mac? or why would you connect iPhone to Mac via Bluetooth?
wifi problems after installing 15.6.1
Thanks for confirming. Can you provide more details? WiFi is disconnecting and reconnecting unexpectedly?
I can confirm WiFi not connecting/working anymore.
Thanks for confirming Eddy. Have you tried to forget network and rejoin?
Yes I tried. Still not connecting.
What iPhone model? Next, step would be to Reset Network Settings. Have you done that?
After update of my iPhone7 it shows message that my iPhone was updated to iOS 15.6.1 but when i tap OK nothing happens. Cant unlockt it and operate.
Thanks
Try to force restart the device Miro. Press & hold Home Button + Sleep/Wake button until the screen turns black and the Apple logo is displayed on the screen. More details here.
Thanks it helped.
I had never before need to force restart my iPhone so I didnt know how to do it.
You’re welcome! Glad it did.
After new update I can’t force restart my iPhone 8 and the camera is all blacked out and can’t take pictures .
Later edit: Never mind. I managed to force restart anyways and now camera works too.
Have a good day :)
Great! Thanks for contributing.
RE: . Emails removed from Mail accounts after iPadOS 15.6.1 update. | Reported by Anne C. in the comments.
Workaround: Re-add email account (To be confirmed).
I have same issue with the new release on iPhone.
Thanks for confirming. Removing account and adding it back to Mail helps?
My friend updated her phone which is version 7 or 8 phone – now the phone doesn’t recognize her passcode for getting into the phone! She’s off to the local Apple store to get help. What a bunch of crap. She tried restarting and rebooting the phone but it says wait 15 minutes and try again….
Sorry to hear this. You sure that she’s typing the correct passcode? What reply did she get from the Apple store? Would appreciate a follow up.
Thank you for your reply. Yes she was using the correct passcode. She went to the Apple store this morning. They had the same issues and also had to reset the password for her Apple ID account. After leaving the store and thinking it was all fixed, now Bluetooth doesn’t work or iMessage for messaging another iPhone. It shows a green bubble in stead of blue. It also is asking her to change the password again for her Apple ID. She is returning tomorrow to the Apple store for more help.
Thanks for the follow up. Yes, iMessage has to be activated after signing out and back in to the Apple ID. The Apple staff should fix it. Keep us updated.
after ios 15.6.1 update, my iphone 12 wont charge anymore. I bought a wireless charger tl help me out for the time but it’s definitely a bug after the update. I tried a reset, cooling it down and cleaning the port.
Thanks for reporting Tom. Did you get the Liquid detected in Lightning connector error, when you initially connected it to the charger after the update?
P.S.: What happens if you connect iPhone to Mac via USB to lightning cable? does it show up in Finder? Is it charging?
Hi, i don’t get the liquid error. My phone does charge when i conmect it to my mac.
and i works again know when i connect it to the electricity net 👍👍👍👍
That’s it. Great! It happened to me in the past and connecting to computer unjammed the wall outlet charging too.
Not charging on current cables and adapters.
What happens when you connect the iPhone to computer via USB cable? Does the device show up. Does it charge?
Have you tried to force restart to see if it helps?
The update is crap. My battery was fine, now instead of charging every other day I have to charge twice a day.
Thanks for reporting Denise. If you check Settings -> Battery -> Battery -> Battery Usage By App do you notice one or more apps in question that have unusual battery usage percentages?
After updating group messaging will not work. I have restarted the phone, logged out of I cloud and back in and still no group messages
Sorry to hear this Natalie. Try to contact Apple Support and tell them about the issue. Your account could be flagged as spam and thus preventing you from sending group iMessages. But this should be fixable on the spot.
Not sure what else to suggest. Let us know if you have any breakthrough.
After update to 15.6.1 on iPad 7th Gen, Apple Mail app no longer functions correctly. It will either lock up, disappear within a few seconds, show no mail at all, or show the inbox and let me scroll through, and THEN lock up. And then disappear. And/or any combination of the above. Totally random. I have deleted and reinstalled the app, removed and re-added the email accounts, hard rebooted the iPad, made sure there is enough free space on the iPad, there is, 13GB.
I’m stumped.
Thanks for the feedback Garth. That must be annoying. I guess your only option is to reinstall iOS 15.6.1.
You need a computer with an iTunes backup or an iCloud backup. More details available here.
Let us know if it helps.
Hello Patricia, thanks for the reply.
Turns out the actual problem was a bad email that was causing the Mail app to fail. But only on the iPad with 15.6.1. Two other iPads which had topped out at 12.5.5 or so worked fine. So I opened up my email on another mail app, deleted the bad email, removed and reinstalled the Mail app, and let it reindex and everything went swimmingly! So I guess I can’t really blame the problem on 15.6.1, although that machine was the only one having a problem with that email. Thanks for your help!
Great news Garth. Happy that you managed to fix it. Many thanks for sharing the reason and the troubleshooting method that you used.
When you refer to a “bad email” you mean an email that had a corrupt filed attached, or?
Well, it was an email from Yahoo, just a standard “news updates for the day” kind of a thing, but it probably had some kind of a script that was running in the background and the Mail app was unable to process the script, resulting in the freaky behavior. We get these all day every day, so they are not considered spam or any other kind of potentially unwanted program, but this one just made the Apple Mail app confused and unresponsive. Of course, I get confused and unresponsive at times myself, so I can’t always blame the iPad. :o) Might have been the timing of the update and the email, or might have just been the stars aligning in the wrong position, causing the iPad to think it was me. But the fact that it was the 15.6.1 device that had the problem, and not the older devices, makes me wonder…
After the 15.6.1 update all of the Apple users couldn’t call my vets office. However an android user could. All 3 Apple phones said cannot complete as dialed.
Thanks for sharing. Did they have cellular coverage?
Yes
That’s really strange. Are they able to call other numbers and just yours is unavailable for them?
Were they dialing regular calls or WiFi calling?
WiFi calling on your device might experience problem. Check it out in Settings -> Phone -> Wi-Fi calling. If it’s turned On, try to turn it Off, reboot iPhone and turn it back On.
Ok I will try that. Thank you.
Updated to 15.6.1 on Sunday 21st, everything worked fine until Tuesday. Now it won’t charge, neither on a normal wall charger nor on wireless nor if connected to a pc. It does hold its current charge while plugged in though, but I can’t seem to find any parasitic drain which could cause such a substantial loss. Tried force restarting a couple times now.
Thanks for reporting. Are you using a case? Remove it and also gently clean the charging port.
Connecting to computer via USB cable should help unjam charging not working. Also does, force restarting. But you said you already tried that.
Not sure what else to suggest. You might be dealing with hardware failure. Do you have an Apple store or authorized repair shop nearby? You might have to bring your device in for a check.
Keep us updated please as I am really curios how this works out.
The port itself is fine, neither dirty nor damaged, iTunes recognized the device without a problem, did a full backup and restoring cycle – which did not help with the problem. Also did a DFU reset and a complete fresh firmware install, but the issue prevails.
Sidenote: While the phone itself does show that it’s being charged while plugged in, iTunes recognizes that the device is in fact not being charged.
As the battery itself is fine at 85% health, and the charging port itself is fine, since iTunes is able to recognize and communicate with the phone, the only remaining options would either be a failed charge controller chip or a software bug causing the controller chip to not respond/work. It might just be perfect timing or bad luck that this happened so close to the latest update.
Probably just going to replace the phone for now, I don’t think this is something that a shop around here is going to be able to fix or do it cost effectively.
Thanks for the extended follow up Matt.
What you could also try is update to iOS 16 Public Beta 5 which is really stable and very close to the final release. Let us know if it makes a difference.
About 45 min ago after deleting emails they instantly reappear. The dot indicating they are not read is gone but they will not leave inbox. Never had this problem before 15.6.1 update. If they do leave the screen they reappear when you delete another one. The mailbox settings on the phone have not changed since it was set up and it is an XR so I am pretty sure its an issue with new software update. I get several hundred emails a day so this will turn into a big issue for me quickly if I can’t delete them.
Thanks for reporting this Dess. I assume that you’re using the stock Mail app. Have you tried to sign out and re-add your accounts?
Another workaround would require you to install a third-party mail client like Gmail and use it to delete your emails. It’s not ideal but it should at least help you to erase those mails until a better fix is available.
Let us know if it helps.
Siri completely missing from iPhone 13 Pro Max after upgrade to 15.6.1 …. It is not in settings at all
That’s really strange. Have you tried rebooting your device?
What about restrictions? Check Screen Time -> Content & Privacy Restrictions -> Allowed Apps -> Siri & Dictation.
After 15.6.1 my I phone 12 potrait mood not working.
How I fix it ?
Thanks for reporting Adiba. Can you provide more details? Is the Portrait option not available in Camera? Do you get a black screen in the viewfinder?
First, try to reboot iPhone using the force restart trick described here: https://www.iphonetricks.org/how-to-force-restart-iphone-13-lineup/
Permanent (Re)Boot Loops after upgrading iPad 2020 from iPadOS 15.6 to 15.6.1
Unfortunatel they come irregularly. New installing doesnt help…
Sorry to hear this Theodor. What if you try to install iPadOS 16 Public Beta which is close to its public release version and quite stable. More details available here: https://www.iphonetricks.org/ios-16-public-beta-5-issues-bugs-fixes/
Or just wait it out 2 more weeks until iPadOS 16 will be released to the public.
after 15.6.1 update many apps show a pop up–“the developer of this app needs to update it to work with this version of IOS.’ many apps won’t open at all for this reason. IPAD 6th Generation
That’s a new on bob. Thanks for reporting.
Are there any app updates available in the App Store. Update the apps if needed.
Have you managed to get around this in the meantime? Would appreciate a follow up.
Updated iphone 12 to IOS 15.6.1 and now it will not connect to my sim card. Its showing as though its constantly searching. So I have no call, text or data facility. It works via WiFi.
Took sim out and put in my daughters iphone 12 and it works fine (she dare not update hers now).
Sky mobile say they are sending a new sim, but not sure what use that will be as my sim works fine in my daughters iphone 12.
Tried everything apart from a factory reset. Dare not try this as I have read if it does not work, it will not allow me to set up again and use it on WiFi.
Phone is 14 months old. How can apple get away with this ?
My hunch is that the new iOS updates are not recognizing old generation SIM cards. There are many affected by this issue, but in total it’s a small percentage when compared to the tens of millions of users.
The new SIM Card should do the trick. Would appreciate a followup after you get it. Let us know if it fixed your issue.
iPhone 13 Pro Max – a few days after updating to iOS 15.6.1, ny iPhone will not beep or vibrate for any notifications if Bluetooth is switched on, or if connected to my Apple Watch. Highly Frustrating. If i turn off Bluetooth and disconnect my Apple Watch, notifications work fine…
Thanks for reporting Owen. Usually, that’s the intended behavior. If you wear your Apple Watch and watch is unlocked, all the notifications on the iPhone are routed to the Apple Watch and the wrist-gadget alerts you, while the iPhone remains silent.
iPhone 11 Pro stuck on software update downloading 15.6.1 screen.
Any suggestions on how to get past this?
Open Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage and tap on the iOS 15 software update file available in the list. Delete it. Reboot iPhone and start over.
I’ve updated. Every time I try to share something be it an article or a photo the app freezes and I have to restart the phone. This happens with Facebook as well as with WhatsApp. It didn’t happen before.
Thanks for reporting. This happens when you’re selecting an image in Photos, use the Share option, pick WhatsApp and the app opens with the photo embedded and the send option available?
The same happens with articles that you want to share in Safari?
My Iphone 12 did not load the update on the first attempt, had to delete in my data….same for attempt 2, 3, 4……finally on #5 downloaded and installed. About a week later, started having “cellular plan issues”…I had to take my phone to Xfinity on 8/28 spent two hours, and 5 SIM cards and all of a sudden my phone showed a cellular plan. Xfinity did not know why problem started and not sure how it was fixed. Today, 9/5 9am problem happened again, Cellular issue, no cellular plan……….called Xfiniity……..they reloaded cell plan again, reset network again and problem seemed solved, unitil 7:30pm………cellular issue, no cell plan………I turned off phone, restarted again, reset network and about 5 minutes later…..phone cell was connected. Xfinity wanted to sell me a new phone……if I need a new phone ……..Apple should furnish phone due to their mess caused by update……..
Thanks for the extended feedback Jerry. That’s crazy. Did you perhaps drop the device or did it suffer any kind of shock after the update and right before the problems started occurring?
Not, looking to defend Apple, but this issue is really strange. It would be interesting if you would bring your iPhone to an Apple Store and ask them to run some diagnosis.
You can also share with them this thread to prove that there, are others in the same boat.
Not sure what other advice to provide. Keep us updated please.
My iPhone 12 was working fine until I updat it ios 15.6.1. Immediately after the update, I noticed that the phone did not give sound on start up, so I quickly opened the music app tried to play songs and it failed to play nor give any sound. I tried to play another songs on Spotify and boomplayer and the same issue still persist. Another thing that I noticed was that all the songs I tried to play completely buffered but failed to play and give sound. I tried another thing by opening YouTube to play videos but failed. All the videos I tried to played only opened the first picture frame and canceled playing later. I tried to make calls but failed to hear any sound even when someone called me. What surprise me is that anytime I pluiin my earpiece and restart my phone all the music apps will work perfectly and I can make calls and hear the caller voice through the front speaker clearly if I increased the volume to the highest (with earpiece plugged in). In conclusion, my front and bottom speakers stopped working after the update but the front speaker will worked if I plug in my earpiece. How can I fix this update glitches or I have to wait till the next update (ios 16).
Thanks for your feedback Hilory.
First of all, I need to clarify that iPhones don’t come with a startup sound. The iPhone 14 is the first iOS devices that include a startup sound.
Try to clean install iOS 15.6.1 using a computer as described here:https://www.iphonetricks.org/how-to-clean-install-ios-on-iphone/
